His showing included various live and portrait shows of Emm, Tegan and Sara, Sloan, Beastie Boys, Courtney Love, and more. It was really nice to see Dustin's work all enlarged and hung like that. The night including delicious finger foods, an awesome DJ mixing some tunes as well as a wonderful set by Emm Gryner. As a photographer I look at Dustin's work in awe and hope that one day I could be as good as he is. If you are in Toronto anytime during the next month, check out his work in person. It will be hanging in the Insomnia Cafe (Bloor and Bathurst) until September 4th Cheers Rannie www.rannieturingan.com Hi everyone - for a sneak peak at Dustin Rabin's show at Insomnia, go to... http://www.geocities.com/tara_passenger/emm.html What better example to use than the lovely Emm Gryner! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 08:52:43 -0400 From: Michael Keast Subject: "Eymm Gryner" I was flipping through yesterday's issue of GTA Today (one of those new free papers that are suddenly everywhere in Toronto), and was pleasantly surprised to come across one of Dustin Rabin's photos of Emm...those who saw the show at Insomnia would recognize it, it's the one that was hanging by the front door, where she appears to be either laughing or screaming (I still can't decide which)...in any case, it's an excellent shot. The only problem is that they misspelled her name, the caption reads "Eymm Gryner is just one of the musicians photographed by Torontonian Dustin Rabin". Anyway, despite the spelling error. I still thought that was pretty cool... ************************************************* Mike Keast (michael.keast@giffels.com) http://www.geocities.com/dtswd/ "thank god i've got 3 minutes to tell you what i did today" ************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 11:15:14 -0400 From: rturingan@dico.com Subject: Journal Okay Emm has a new Journal up.... August 8, 2000 Ben's Living Room Show After taking in the sweet sights of dead fish and overweight house husbands on the shores of Lake Ontario, I trucked over to Ben's house in Rochester for what was the third in a series of 5 living room shows this month. The Living Room Shows are a mystery to most, but people have been doing them for years. Most people do them now as contests, e.g. "Win Sugar Ray in Your Living Room", although I'll admit that was one contest I didn't bother to enter. The Living Room Shows have been a good way to go to cities and play where I don't usually play in clubs, and an even better way to play to folks who are under the drinking age. When I got out of the car a figure came bolting across the lawn yelling my name, which was enough to wake me up from the long hours trapped in my car. This was Ben. Many snaps of the camera later, I set up in Ben's outdoor patio where all of his cool friends came to listen. I played nine songs and then we sold some T-shirts and KR showed everyone who to make dreads. Ben and Leigh modeled my new T-shirts and then I found out that Ben's mom and her friend are romance novelists which is very exciting. Pizza and pepsi followed and then it was back on the road for more mayhem. The next Living Room Show is in Rhode Island and then it caps off at Rannie's house in Scarborough, which is bound to be the mother of all living room shows. And the last one for a while.... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 11:30:34 -0400 From: rturingan@dico.com Subject: Review:Dead Relatives Hmmm I guess a lot of people don't have DR yet.... Emm gave me my copy on Saturday night when I saw her at the benefit. However I was fortunate enough to be living with Slogan Winner, Chelle, that I actually heard it early last week. I dunno where to start with this review. unlike her previous offerings, this album is a mix and match of various eras of emm. Each song telling their own story in various different ways.. You can hear so many different influences from song to song... My current obsession on the album is "a little war" There is something about the quality of the song writing and recording of this track. It hits me square in the chest and blows me away... okay so I am gonna go off track here.. and actually move away from my review and on to other topics... sue me... to close up the DR issue however.. I am very pleased with the new album... Anyway, I am currently listening to a little war.. and almost on the verge of tears... (not a good think considering I am at work)... which reminds me of how I got "HOOKED" on to emm to begin with. It reminds me of when I would blast "Acid" from my car speakers as tears would flow down my face. Gee you gotta love how heartache can make such a great song..... deep breath... okay.. I am emotionally drained... I don't feel like finishing this email or this review... It hits me square > in the chest and blows me away... okay... i SO SO agree with rannie on this one. it's really hard to put into words how beautiful a little war is on here, but i think it's the best track on the album. there is such a pure soft beauty to her voice, whatever that means, complemented perfectly by the backing keyboards. the lyrics are unbelievable. the production is amazing. the way she enunciates certain words and draws them out, like "war" - god, this is so amazing. the first time i heard it live i was blown away, but this recording does something different. it almost makes me weak just listening. like rannie wrote, it emotionally drains you. similar to the way i felt when i first heard tornados. i am also obsessed with suffer (my fave on the album that i hadn't heard before). and of course mary jill - 4 months running. there isn't one track on here i don't like, but i haven't gotten into this recording of parting song yet. it's very different. i prefer just the piano. anyway, another fabulous album in the discography. dana ===== dana wagner -> http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~dwagner | university of pennsylvania, class of 2000 "there was no other living thing/ who meant the sum of everything" -eg __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I was listening to it all day Sunday as I made my rounds of the used CD stores, and by the end of the day I was feeling all bummed out, which is odd because I usually find Emm's music very uplifting. And then the same thing happened on Monday when I listened to it all day at work. Maybe it's just because the album is so heavy on the mellow piano/keyboard ballads...that's my only real complaint about it, I wish there were a few more upbeat songs on it. Then again, maybe it's just me, I tend to be fairly depression-prone anyway. In any case, it pretty much goes without saying that it's yet another excellent release from Emm, even though I must admit that it's not my favourite of her albums so far (that honour still goes to Public)...I'd like to cast my vote for Half Sorry as the best song on the album, and arguably one of the best Emm's written to date, I can hardly believe how gorgeous song that is. ************************************************* Mike Keast (michael.keast@giffels.com) http://www.geocities.com/dtswd/ "thank god i've got 3 minutes to tell you what i did today" ************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 18:04:14 GMT From: "cookie radfood" Subject: Re: Two cents on DR lindi rockstar you make me howl!!!!! that was so awesome. xo kr Here is my five cents or two cents or million dollars on Dead Relatives: I want to marry the song "Half Sorry" I want to make love to the song "Yellow" I want to stab all my ex-boyfriends to the song "Suffer" I want to cry a river of tears to "Daryn Song" I want to be in a drunken oblivion and listen to "Lonely Boy" I want to drive the guys house who dumped me last month and listen to "little War" I want to go find people named "Mary Jill" and "Joan" and give them big hugs and tell them its all gonna be okay. I'm completely wiped out but I just wanted to post quickly and give you a quick rundown of the evening's festivities :) A bunch of us were there at 8 to catch Jenny Bruce's set. She's awesome. Emm was on a bit after 9 and played for about an hour. Stuart Cameron (co-producer of OLY) was there to back her up on guitar and they were a powerful combination... They played a mix of Dead Relatives songs and a few others... I'm sure someone will post the set list. "Yellow" and "Half Sorry" were insanely gorgeous... There was a pretty good crowd there and everyone seemed to dig her songs. It was good to see everyone again--I'm sorry I had to leave so quickly but I've been up since 5 and have to work early tomorrow :( Corporate America sucks!! Anyway--I listened to a bit of DR tonite in the cab on the way home and was impressed... I've followed Emm's career for several years now and it is amazing to see how far she has come and how hard she continues to work... I'm always so inspired after seeing her live!! Seeing Emm and KR again was great, and i lovelovelove them. I don't have emm's set written down, but i know she played - -southern dreamer - -wisdom bus - -stereochrome (acoustic guitar !) - -julia - -summerlong - -yellow - -acid - -a case of tornados - -half sorry (for me yay :P) i believe that's it. she misplaced her setlist so she did it by ear, which was amazing :) she was in great spirits - told her usual great emm stories :) it was great. quite sad about dr not being there, but it's all good. so anyways, thanks to all that came, i believe a great time was had by all, and thanks emm and kr for stopping near the cow pasture - you can come to antonios any time :) take care out there xobex ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V3 #210 ***********************************
