I've waited a year and a half to hear that; that song so needs a breeze and the smell of freshwater close by. And the CD after that... Songs for Clem... Sarah H does some old standards... I also wish she'd record that Trevor Richardson (Hellbillies) song she does called, "Mercy Bin". It was way cool to see Luther (Luther Wright and the Wrongs) doing some SH harmonizing during some of the workshops at Hillside... James. P.S. So Tab, Steve,... are you convinced now... I just saw Emm in DC last night for the first time since I drove up to Toronto to see her at Lilith Fair last summer. Wow! She was incredible. And she was so cute when she completely forgot how Crazy Train went. :-) I'm sure someone else will type up the setlist, so I won't bother. I just hope she'll be coming back down here soon. I live only five minutes away from the venue...much closer than the 10 hours I drove to see her last time. I'm even considering driving up to Toronto this weekend for the benefit at C'est What. I just can't get "Half Sorry" out of my head. It's been a very appropriate song lately. :-) - ---brian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 10:58:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Glenn D Watts Subject: OAC: Sarah Harmer/Nancy Hess (well, SEC) [This is a long post, hope you find it worthwhile and don't slam me for rambling on...] I have never posted before, but I am a HUGE Emm fan, I've only seen her once up in Cincinnati (LRShow, thanks Andrea)... anyway, I live down in Kentucky, it's not always easy to find cool new music here, but I work pretty hard at it... I love this list, and wish I could actually meet some of you guys... Anyway, I have to say that Sarah Harmer is TOTALLY cool, the word that I keep thinking of when I listen to her CD is just "sincere"... I don't know, it's like there's something totally honest in whatever she's singing... "Capsized" is absolutely haunting, it's worth the CD just for that song... SO IF YOU DON'T HAVE THAT CD, GET IT... Also, I STRONGLY suggest that everyone check out Nancy Hess if you haven't already. I think her website is http://www.nancyhess.com and there are sound clips there, I'm sure ... but IF YOU LIKE EMM AND SARAH, YOU WILL ALSO LIKE NANCY, I feel pretty confident in that... And if you actually buy her CD, tell her "some guy from Kentucky told me about you"... I'm really serious, tell her that, I think she'll remember me, I doubt she sells many discs in this part of the world... How do I know about her? I just saw an ad for her CD in The Big Takeover, went to her website, and like when I "found" Emm or Sarah, I felt like I'd stumbled onto hidden treasure... YOU WILL LOVE THIS INDIE CD... And lastly, this may be shameless, but I am a musician, too, and you can order one of my band's latest CD's on CDNow (if they don't go under for lack of cash before you get there)... the band is called SLACKSHOP, it's a fairly eclectic mix of "modern rock" (don't gag, I'm just trying to find a good description)... anyway, a mix of modern rock with some more exotic sounds and production techniques... People have compared it to "the cool songs by Tom Petty" (whatever THAT means) or even "what it would sound like if U2 joined forces with Sunny Day Real Estate and moved to Kentucky"... (uh...?) Just check it out and make your own decision I guess? Several of the tracks were recorded and mixed by Mark Richardson, who worked on the first Smashing Pumpkins CD (Siamese Dream), he's also worked with Hole, Emmylou Harris, others, and it was also mixed by Tim Stroh, Grammy-nominated engineer (for Robbie Robertson's "Contact From The Underworld of Redboy").... Okay, so that all sounds like cheesy self-promotion and name-dropping, sorry... I just want you to know we're legit, that's all... but seriously, after reading you guys talking for the last year or so, I think many of you would really like it, but who knows?... the record is called "faint praise and happy accidents", and unfortunately the El Corporatoes at CDNow don't have any sound clips up, but if ANY of you want some MP3s, I would be MORE than happy to e-mail them to you, or I can do the Napster thing (no offense to you who hate it), but seriously, I am VERY willing to get ANYONE who wants to check out some songs whatever you want... AND, LIKE EMM OR SARAH OR *ANY* INDIE ARTISTS, WE WOULD LOVE YOU TO CALL YOUR LOCAL RADIO STATIONS AND ASK THEM TO PLAY IT... at the "peak" about 3 weeks ago, we had about 20 or 30 stations playing songs in rotation or specialty play (so they tell me), so that's cool, I guess... Actually, I think this is our work-in-progress website address: http://www.saunalahti.fi/~jtlin/slackshop/07/ The website's not finished, the sound clips might not work yet, etc., but you'll get the idea... Okay, I promise not to post any "OAC" or "MC" ("me" content) messages to this list ever again... Glenn gdwatts@iglou.com p.s.--I'm really serious, if you want to check out SLACKSHOP, let me know, if nothing else I'll send you a free demo CD or something, really... just e-mail me at gdwatts@iglou.com - we're just like Emm and Sarah, or Tricia and the other Aquezada girls - we're just trying to do our own thing without the corporate world smashing us (or our dreams) to pieces... and I've hesitated talking about it because I didn't want to seem all "me, me, me" ... but geez, a lot of you might actually LIKE it, so why not?!? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 11:50:55 -0400 From: "Phillips, Christopher" Subject: Emm at Metro Cafe, DC last night Emm did a soooooper show last night at the Metro Cafe in DC. She played (in no particular order): Southern Dreamer (the opener) Wisdom Bus Half-Sorry Stereochrome July Yellow (with faux strings courtesy of the Kurzweil) Crazy Train! Fetching Decay! Phonecall 45 Parting Song Julia and maybe one or two more but I forget which ones. She sounded great and seemed to really like the DC crowds :) It was good to see Dana again (send me some info on good NYC cd shops) & meet Kristy (free promo tapes all the way) & Brian. Also a shout-out to Gretchen (even though she's not on the list...yet, she was VERY instrumental in organizing the show, gotta' mention her anyway :) She was in a very good mood and was really chatty after the show. Unfortunately b/c of the Dead Relatives Fed-Ex incident I only got to pre-order the cd instead of physically purchase it but c'est la vie. All I know is that there is a certain shipping company who will be getting several prank phone calls today ;) Upon hearing "Crazy Train" a couple of us (you know who you are) were hoping we'd be treated to "Sabotage" also since there seemed to be some metal-heads in the audience. I was also hoping to hear "Death Is A New Day" or "The Good You Make" but alas to no avail. But...Emm remembered my name! yay! She is just so awesome. I can't believe it.
