Right from the start, Juliana said she was in the mood to play new songs, and she meant it...with the exception of My Sister and one song I didn't recognize (I'm guessing it was a cover), the entire setlist was taken from Beautiful Creature, Total System Failure and Bed, much to the dismay of a girl near the front who kept calling out requests for older songs (to which Juliana responded by offering to give her money back!). I thought a lot of the new stuff came across even better live than it does on record, especially some of the mellower songs from Beautiful Creature, which sounded amazing played on electric guitar with a full band. I guess it would have been nice to hear some older stuff, but her new songs are just so good that I can't really complain, and she put on an amazing performance, both her singing and guitar playing were flawless. And her band was very impressive as well...I couldn't tell you any of their names, but they were rock solid. All in all, a fantastic show. ************************************************************ Mike Keast (michael.keast@giffels.com) http://www.geocities.com/dtswd/ "I'll never be any saner I'm a born entertainer" ************************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 12:00:46 -0400 From: rturingan@dico.com Subject: weddings (was Re: OAC: Juliana Hatfield) I figured it would have been a really good show.. I would have went, if it were for the fact that I was at my cousin's wedding on Saturday. Weddings are such an emotional drain. You see so many people that you haven't seen in awhile. You hear heart warming speeches that make you wanna cry. You see a person move forward into a new chapter of their lives. It's quite a huge commitment, change etc etc... hmmm I know so many people online that are getting married this year and next year. It is quite amazing. I know this thread has been rehashed on other lists... but what ngs would you use at your wedding? As an official card-carryi ging weasel of the music industry I've gotten the chance to hear the new album (at least 10 times in the past week) and it is truly an awesome artistic accomplishment... not to mention just a great f#@%king album. The Howie B production is dense and deep, with a rhythmic mix that pushes the "funky but chic" envelope in just the right places. Holly's voice is a marvel, particularly on the 2 David Kahne-produced tracks "Switched" and the album's finest song "Something Else" (must agree with Jason on this on )...It is a bold, sometimes challenging pop masterpiece that simply gets richer with each listen (as the best albums do). Holly sez that she wants the songs to "sound like dreams feel" and there is truly a sense that you're on some ethereal aural journey from one track to the next, with the emotions touching pain, anger and jubilation, sometimes within the same breath. "Flash Flood" is slinky and wet, with a killer bass line..."Small Room" rocks with rhythm and grace..."Divided" is a sweet, demented elec rolux take on a jazzy vocal style -- Lambert, Hendricks and Ross meet LTJ Bukem...And "Happily Ever After" closes the disc with with a ferocious kick and vocals that will give you chills (glad not to be the "ex" in this relationship)...I could go on but I d rather listen than type..."Tender Hooks" indeed, Holly. - --------------------------- Get your FREE Email at http://mailcity.lycos.com Get your PERSONALIZED START PAGE at http://my.lycos.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 17:34:01 EDT From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: OAC: Holly Palmer, others I have been listening to "A Rose by any other name" from Holly's upcoming album and it is beautiful... definitely something that is inspiring me as it is sort of close to what I'm trying to acheive--dreamlike, trippy.... Metallica sucks. Okay I was *just* reading someone's post and how they got banned from Napster by Metallica, etc. And I thought "whoa, that really sucks, I feel sorry for her"... then I go on Napster just innocently looking for some Emm stuff and it won't connect. I get this message: * Unable to login: riotgrrl18 banned: Banned by Metallica How much does that suck?? I have like 4 of their songs in my mp3 list.. out of the hundreds of other songs I have. I actually liked (LIKED the key word) some of their music and I have 2 of their albums and now I get this message. Yet another reason why mainstream music sucks and I will not support it anymore. I'm going to sell their CDs tomorrow, I don't care how much they give me there's no way I'm gonna keep them. Maybe I'm making too big a deal out of it but come on, they became as big as they are because of fans bootlegs and now that they sold out and became rich they have to cry about every lost penny. I read that they're going to sue certain users for $100,000 for EACH song they pirated and possible jail time. What a way to reward your dedicated fans!! AAHH this is making me so mad. I'm really loving that cartoon that Alvin sent me regarding this issue and if anyone wants it, email me and I'll send it to you. Okay I'm done ranting, sorry but I know you all love indie music and can understand my frustration hopefully. Thank God for indie. Metallica sucks. hello all =) this whole thing with record companies/artists suing napster, etc. kind of makes me ill. personally, i don't buy that crap about losing all this money due to people dling and burning it online. i think napster and its kind are helpful to artists and actually INCREASE sales. when somone reccomends a song to me by a specific artist, i try and look for it on mp3 and if i like it, i'll buy the cd. that's pretty much how i really started liking emm gryner. i had the free lilith 98 sampler cd with "acid" on it, but after a suggestion by my boyfriend (hi honey ;)) to listen to "hook machine", "fetching decay" and "doomsday", i was hooked. i own all three of emm's cds now. i don't like buying cd's unless i like the majority of the songs on it, so mp3's are extremely helpful in that sense. also, i'd guess (just a ballpark estimate i'm throwing out here) that 95% or so of people who have mp3's, also own that artist's cd(s). i don't agree with people dling whole cd's for their collection and never buying them in the store or whatever. i'm one of those people who like to have the "real" cd, with liner notes and all. all but 3 of the burned cd's in my cd collection are mixed cd's, with random songs i like for "home use." after all this, i've changed my mind on hoping emm gets another record deal, cuz music industry sucks ass. well, i'm sure she may want it (more money and all, tighter sound, etc), but due to all this crap, i hope she stays indie =) Devon L.
