Michael Keast suggested Second Spin on Bloor b\w Spadina & Bathurst => haven't been there... tho their seems to be mixed reviews of the place ;-) The ever knowledgable Julian Dunn suggested several places: 1. Vortex Records at Yonge & Eglinton => I whole-heartedly agree with Julian... I too found Leona Naess there... TWICE... air virgin suicides... Murmurs self-titled... and I know Andy of the North finds stuff there all the time... 2. CD Cat at Queen & Bathurst - the one on Yonge is not as good => Hmmm... CD cat seems to be a popular favourite amongst used CD shoppers I know... I find things there sometimes... tho I don't think it's anything too special or outta the ordinary... i found Dido No Angel at the one on yonge once for like 8.99... it was very sweet 3. Sonic Temple at the North York Centre subway - good for discovering hard-to-find material, if you befriend the clerks they will look stuff up for you => haven't been here either... Now for a chelle pick!!! *rubbing hands together & grinning* ;-) ***PENGUIN MUSIC ON QUEEN ST. WEST*** Oh My God... this place is my sanctuary... I'm always finding such new things there that you'd prolly pay an arm and a leg for at HMV or Tower... I always always find good stuff here... check it out sometime =) if anyone else has suggestions for great used CD shops, please feel free to share with the whole class! ;-) that is all... ~chelle q8Þ ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 20:24:50 -0400 (EDT) From: "Julian C. I forgot to check the folder to see that all the mail really was spam. I'll try and check that folder more regularly in the future. But the other day I waltzed in and picked up Leona Naess (which i really wanted!!!), Aimee Mann's Bachelor #2, and Live's Throwing Copper (I'm seein them with Counting Crows in Sept.) for 5.99 each...sweet.. There's a ton of really awesome cd stores in Pittsburgh, I especially like the ones on the South Side... Which I guess is a bad thing if people aren't liking her music here.. but then again, I never would have fallen in love with Emm's music if I didn't happen to see it there and buy it. The only other place I've seen Public here is at Media Play which wasn't around here back then. The few months I lived in Boston, I never left Spins disappointed. And the have the *largest* selection of 2.99 and under CD's, most of them stuff we would really like. I can't even list all my purchases...because there have been so many great finds. They have a website www.cdspins.com and I think they are going online soon...as far as ordering goes. Oh I found Holly Palmers self titled for $1 there. Lol ok sorry. But there is Emm content! At this same CD shop I was browsing one day and found "Public" and an advanced copy of "Public" for $2.99 each. Well I couldnt just let them sit there. So I grabbed both, and kept the advanced copy for me and gave the other copy to a friend of mine at school. So I go back say 2 days later and there is a regular copy of "Public" and an advanced copy back on the shelf for $2.99! And I thought Boston was up on the music scene. Hmmph... "The Debut", directed by Gene Cajayon, is a film that took 8 years to make and has gone through numerous hurdles in funding and development, but has emerged, in my opinion, a gorgeous success. "The Debut" is the first film I've seen to give honest, beautiful definition to what it means to grow up Filipino-Canadian (althought the story is about a Filipino-American). The film weaves in and out of Filipino customs, and also shows the struggle AND beauty of being a young Filipino in America, without ever losing its humour, candor, or sight of the story itself. This film was a celebration, empowering without spelling out any tedious messages, it was quietly triumphant. It didn't candy-coat any issues or become self-righteous. There was the perfect amount of attention paid to both traditional Filipino music and dance, and also hip-hop and club music which is a big part of the Filipino and Filipino-American culture. "The Debut" is just a wonderful piece of cinema, that I'm sure will spawn other Asian Americans and Asian Canadians to exercise their voices as a unique culture, people of a beautiful, vibrant heritage who share the common thread of growing up on the other side of the Pacific Ocean. The film was joyous but sad, honest but uplifting, and of course, "Southern Dreamer" over the end credits I thought worked nicely, but then again, I could be biased. Please support this film if you have the chance. I know I will! www.debutfilm.com - -- http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~dwagner/emm *music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 00:13:08 -0500 From: dana wagner Subject: OAC: joseph arthur markeee has sung the praises of joe arthur over the last few months, and was even kind enough to give a few of us at fezzfest a sampling of his latest album "come to where i'm from." i thought i'd bring him up on the list for anyone unfamiliar with the music and give it a big 'ol recommendation. thanks, mark. :) he's also been touring... toronto, philly, and new york all in the last week or so. probably elsewhere, but i'm not sure. just today i saw three reviews of the cd, in the philadelphia city paper, the philly weekly, and on canoe's jam music site. all very positive. if anyone is interested in seeing the reviews in the philly papers, i can type em up and send em your way. good, original stuff. and emm seems to be a fan as well. dana (sick, off to bed, graduating tomorrow) - -- http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~dwagner/emm *music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life* ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V3 #132 ***********************************
