["Allie Tomkevicius" Subject: [nec] my trip to canada hello everyone, this week i went up to toronto with erica and leigh, so i thought i'd post a bit about our adventures. let me say first of all i had an AWESOME time, and only wish we could've stayed longer. but, since my parents are coming today and i have stuff to do to prepare for that and graduation, we only stayed 3 days. thanks to julian for letting us crash at his awesome pad! julian had come down to NJ to go to a nields show with erica and leigh on friday (i couldn't make it) and then on sunday i went up to erica's place and the four of us drove up to toronto! our soundtrack included: leona naess, emm's public, atlanta lilith fair '99 (sarah and others), dave matthews band, lauren christy, feist, holly palmer sinner, and once we crossed the border sarah slean & tara maclean. leigh took pictures of the "welcome to canada" sign, since it was her first time there, and we wondered why the heck there is a sign at the border that says "www.peacebridge.com" and what could possibly be on the site. roberto came over to julian's sunday night and we read george and martha stories (with a little bit of a sexual inuendo twist) and the american slang book. monday erica, leigh, and i went to toronto islands and picnicked there. the best thing was on the ferry back, we saw a little boy, maybe three years old, wearing a yellow emm watch! he was from ireland... maybe he heard about emm's travels in ireland and became a fan. ok, j/k. but it was funny he had on the same watch erica and i did. monday night we met up with rannie, chelle, and andy and ate at... you guessed it: marche! mmmm. then we went out for bubble tea (i was de-virginized) and drove to the beaches, where we played singing games and had crazy fun drinking kaluha and peach schnapps (not together - ewww). we spent tuesday cd shopping on yonge and queen. fairly good prices for used cds, but nothing like 99cents at joe's cds in nyc! most were about 7 or 8 bucks (canadian). my purchases included: transistor sound and lighting co. sinead lohan "no mermaid" sarah harmer "songs for clem" tekla "somebody else" lit from within - nettwerk compilation tara - "if you see me" ep me'shell ndegeocello - peace beyond passion indigo girls - back on the bus y'all the best find was at record peddler on queen street where they had an entire section for "canadian indie". woohoo! unfortunately most of the store was new cds, regularly priced. the place we really liked was cd cat! and wednesday we headed back home, but not before stopping at niagra falls on the way. wow. it was pretty cool there. and a beautiful day! by the time we left niagra it was 4pm, so we didn't get back to erica's till 1am. most of the drive was beautiful though. and erica caught me as i was speeding down the highway at 90mph, just before we spotted a cop up ahead and i slowed down to 55 in under a minute. whew! erica bought a canadian flag, so we waved it out the window and confused people who saw the jersey plates on the car. um, fun fun. i can't wait to go back sometime. good seeing rannie, andy, chelle, julian, and rob again. we vowed we'll try to make it up there once a month. heh. hopefully next time there will be some good shows to see when i go. ok, now i have to clean my house before my parents show up. :( have a great weekend everyone!! dana ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 14:05:12 -0400 From: Michael Keast Subject: NEC: Re: my trip to canada > we spent tuesday cd shopping on yonge and queen. fairly good > prices for used cds, but nothing like 99cents at joe's cds in > nyc! most were about 7 or 8 bucks (canadian). > the best find was at record peddler on queen street where > they had an entire section for "canadian indie". woohoo! > unfortunately most of the store was new cds, regularly > priced. the place we really liked was cd cat! Too bad you missed the best used CD store in the city...I try not to mention it too often (I don't want everyone getting to all the good CDs before I do!), but I think I can make an exception for my fellow headliners. I've explored most of the used music stores in Toronto, and the best one I've come across so far is Second Spin, which is on Bloor between Spadina and Bathurst. I've been going there every weekend since I moved here in January, and I've never left empty-handed...it's not a huge place, but they always seem to have a great selection, and I often come across little treasures like advance copies of CDs that aren't even out in stores yet. And to top it all off, they have a "frequent buyer" card that gets you a free CD for every 10 that you buy, which is especially helpful when you buy as many CDs as I do! ************************************************* Mike Keast (michael.keast@giffels.com) http://www.geocities.com/dtswd/ "I'll never be any saner I'm a born entertainer" ************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 20:29:29 -0400 (EDT) From: "Julian C. No problem, Dana! Let me say that I, too, had a most excellent time, both in New Jersey where I went to see the Nields, and entertaining Fumblers/Headliners in the weeks before and after my trip. I wish you three (Dana, Erica and Leigh) could only have stayed longer; two days isn't a lot to visit Toronto for. Oh yes, and I did look at www.peacebridge.com while I was at work. Pretty standard stuff about customs, tolls, weight limits for trucks, etc... okay you REALLY don't care, I know, but I had to look :-) - - Julian (who could hardly concentrate all day *wink*) [ Julian C. I've been there a number of times (since I used to live within walking distance of there) and I've not found their selection to be that good. I dunno, maybe it's me and my musical tastes, but I've rarely bought anything there. My votes for top three used CD stores in the city would be: 1. Vortex Records at Yonge and Eglinton -- I always find stuff here, e.g. Leona Naess, Cry^3, Sarah Slean for $1 was obtained here, etc. 2. CD Cat at Queen and Bathurst (the one on Yonge St. is not as good, IMHO) 3. Sonic Temple at the North York Centre subway (good for discovering hard-to-find material, if you befriend the clerks they will look stuff up for you) - - Julian [ Julian C.
