I arrived at the Rivoli around 9:20, and my timing was perfect, as Martina Sorbara (hope I'm spelling that right) took the stage only a minute or two after I got there. I'd never heard Martina before, but I must say I was thoroughly impressed. She's got a great voice, reminds me of Ani DiFranco with a bit of Jewel thrown in. She also seems to be a very talented songwriter, although I couldn't say what songs she played since I'd never heard any of them before. In any case, I was very pleased to discover yet another multi-talented singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist...unfortunately I didn't have enough cash on me to buy her CD, but it's definitely going on my "to buy" list. As for Sarah Harmer...what can I say, she rocks. Quite simply one of the best singer-songwriters this country has ever produced, in my humble opinion. I hadn't seen her live in almost a year and a half, so I was very much looking forward to this show, and she definitely didn't disappoint. She played all the songs from her new solo album, as well as a couple from her Songs For Clem album, and a few Weeping Tile songs, including an amazing rendition of "Dogs and Thunder". She was joined by a number of guests throughout the show, including Kevin Fox on bass/cello, and Weeping Tile guitarist Luther Wright. She was in a great mood too, she kept the crowd laughing all night with her between-song jokes and stories. All in all, an excellent show...both Sarah and Martina are playing again tonight at the Rivoli, so I'd urge anyone in the Toronto area to check it out, it'll be well worth your ten bucks. I also picked up Sarah's new solo album "You Were Here", which is fantastic. Some of her new songs have a bit of a folk/country-ish feel to them, although a lot of the stuff sounds like it would fit right in with her Weeping Tile material...the album even includes a revamped version of the WT classic "Basement Apt." It's only available at shows or through her website, so I would highly recommend that if you can't make it out to the show tonight, head over to www.sarahharmer.com and order yourself a copy of the CD. ************************************************************ Mike Keast (michael.keast@giffels.com) http://www.geocities.com/dtswd/ "There's holes in all the bottles, and my lungs hurt every time I breathe" ************************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 12:15:23 -0500 From: dana wagner Subject: emm is baaaaaaaaaaaaaack... and with a brand spankin' new journal entry. :) all "aboat/aboot" the lrc in ireland and other holiday shenanigans. here is the text for those internet-impaired. if you prefer to read it on the web, ignore below. :) April 12, 2000 The Living Room Show at Fin's house was a grand time. Johan came from Stockholm, (although Finbarr would have us believe it was Oslo), and Beau came from York, the V-man was in fine form, all of Fin's friends were there and Dutchess the dog kept quiet. Conor and Ronan kicked off the night and played a set, including what I deem to be their top-ten smash, "Psyko with a K". Fin was an excellent host, despite me spilling coke all over the carpet and starting "Hello Aquarius" while he was in the bathroom. After the show it was off to Henry's for dancing to the hits of the 90's...a good time was had by all. Oh, and thank you Chris, a Bowienetter from Dublin, for sending such a cool bouquet of fleurs. I've got pictures of everything and will post a full account of the Irish Living Room Show just as soon as the pics gets scanned! Thank you also to Mom for coming along, and putting up with my wild mood swings. And thanks to Ronan for making posters and submitting some album covers for Dead Relatives, which, by the way, the contest is officially closed! Thank you for all your entries! The winner will be announced next week. Yee haw! So yes, the vacation was fantasma. I realized that the themes to Starsky and Hutch, Magnum PI and Taxi make excellent driving music through the tricky backroads of rural Ireland. Full speed ahead! We also listened to the Beatles nonstop and Air's Moon Safari, but Westlife, sad to say, died a slow death. Sorry little Claire. But plenty of mischief on this trip, only one run-in with the police! Success! Please make sure you attend C'est What on April 25th for a night of great music with Rayanne, who's ust released an EP of demos and of course, Dead Daisy's favourite songwriter, Dylan White. It's a Dead Daisy night down at C'est What on April 25th with Rayanne and Cicero!
