I'll look like an idiot if someone has, but hey, what the hell :-) - - J. - -----FW: To: fte@smoe.org Subject: OAC: Emm Gryner in Ireland As some of you may remember, I posted something about an Emm Gryner show in Ireland a few weeks ago. After I saw the notice on the website, I realized that if I didn't go, I'd really regret it afterwards, so I e-mailed Finbarr Ryan, the host of the concert and he graciously said that I was welcome, so I booked a plane ticket and this past Friday I boarded the plane at Stockholm-Arlanda airport and arrived at Dublin a few hours later. I found my way to Dublin's Heuston station and caught a train bound for Cork, in southwestern Ireland. Once there, Fin met me, and after a short while we also found Beau, a Canadian studying music in York (England), who'd been on the same train. We walked over to a van where Fin's father was waiting and we were soon on our way. We stopped at a bed and breakfast place and I wasn't quite sure what was going on, but Fin asked if I wanted to stay there, since I'd told him that I hadn't found a place for the night yet. I told him that was fine, and as it turned out, this was also the place where Emm and her mother were staying. The two of them walked out to the van and we said hello. I was a bit starstruck at first and wasn't really able to say anything coherent, but Emm is a very friendly person, so that quickly loosened my tongue. Once at the Ryans' house, we all got out, said hi to Fin's mother and moved into the room that'd been set up for the concert and people started to drop in: Fin's sister Fiona, Alicia, Ronan, Conor, Conor (another one), John, Amy(?) and several others whose names I'm embarrassed to say I don't recall at the moment. Conor and Ronan started off by doing some songs; they were really talented, but since I hadn't heard the songs before I have a hard time remembering them now - the most memorable one was probably "Psycho" and they finished off with a Smashing Pumpkins cover. Ronan also gave Emm some very artistic CD covers for the contest she's having for her next album (if you're interested, there's more info at www.emmgryner.com). Fin then did three songs of his own - apparently he's new to songwriting and he humbly referred to his songs as "crap", but I really think he was much too modest. After that, Emm started off by playing "Your sort of human being" and then did (I've probably got the order all wrong) "The end", "Summerlong", "89 days of Alcatraz", "Stereochrome", "You do something to me" (the Paul Weller song), "Hook machine" (which she said she put together really quickly just to make a point to someone at a record company who said she needed to write bigger choruses), "Little wars" (probably not quite the right title) "Hello Aquarius" and a new song tentatively called "Case of tornados". All the time, I was just sitting there, completely transfixed. I am not nearly eloquent enough to describe just how fantastic this performance was. Emm is just amazingly talented. Afterwards, Emm's mother asked me if I thought it was worth the trip from Stockholm. All I could say then was "definitely", to which Emm replied "Good answer!". Then we all left for a club called Henry's, where we had a few beers, did some dancing and occasionally tried to talk to each other - the music was *very* loud - the next day I literally had wax falling out of my ears. Incidentally, I was very surprised to find out that the Irishmen (and women) among us preferred Budweiser over Guinness, but I never quite understood why. At around 1.30, we thought it was time to leave, so we said goodbye to Fin and the rest of the party and, pausing at a Subway's for a late night snack, returned to the B&B. The next morning, Emm and her mother were leaving by car, eventually making their way towards Dublin and I was going there directly by train, since I had a plane to catch the next morning, so we said our goodbyes and I started heading towards the train station. Once back in Dublin, I managed to find a B&B for the night in the suburb of Sutton. The next morning, I caught a bus to the airport and - after being told that my name was not in the airline's computer - I eventually managed to get on the plane bound for home. By the way, there were some fumblers featured in this saga: I told Emm that I had a message for her from Edward (he'd e-mailed me earlier). She looked puzzled for a second and then said: "Oh, Edward the boot*" (you know what the star stands for) and then added "He does ask, which is nice of him". Just before the performance, she asked me where I'd heard of her and I mentioned the FTE list and said "You might know Julian Dunn?" and the reply was "totally!". Also, we talked about her touring and I mentioned that I thought I'd seen something about her being in Pennsylvania recently. Again, she looked perplexed until I mentioned that I thought I'd seen that she'd played at Dana Wagner's house and said "Oh yes, that's in Pennsylvania too!". Well, I guess that about wraps it up. All in all, I had a terrific weekend. Emm is truly talented and a tremendously nice person at that. Next time she does a gig somewhere in your hemisphere, be sure to go. You won't be disappointed.
