Whelp, here's my review of FezzFest. Beware, it's long, (though hopefully amusing :-). ***** Yay! First of all, I want to tell everyone that I had a wonderful time these past few days, which totally makes up for the sleep-deprivation I am experiencing right now. Why did the whole "Spring ahead" clock-change have to be this weekend anyhoo? :( On Friday, Erica and Dana swung by my place (a dorm at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ) around 4. We drove to Hoboken, and took the Path into the city. We walked to the Time Cafe (the Fez is inside and downstairs, fyi), hoping to run into Lauren, Kristy (KR), Roberto, Alvin, and some of their friends who were joining us. After finding the cafe empty of anyone we knew, we called Alvin, only to discover that he wasn't joining us that night, and that everybody else was meeting at Dojos for dinner around 7. We walked a few blocks over there, and saw Rob, Steve, Steve's friend, Eric, and Eric's friends, Leif and Dan. (Is that connection right? :-) Okie. My thoughts on Dojos--good, inexpensive food--I got to have Challah bread! :-)--but the service is terrible. We figured there'd be about 12 of us, and the host kept filling up tables of two, instead of trying to hold some for our party. At any rate, after eons of time, they finally sat us, which was good, because in addition to being starved, we were also being smushed by the mass of people who also decided that Friday night would be a great night to eat at Dojos. Lauren, KR, and KR's friend, KC got there and joined us. It was then decided that I'd keep a tally of everything KR ate for the entire weekend, (which I didn't do, because I forgot :) though I can tell you she had fruit salad, a bowl of rice, and a root beer float that night. Part of our discussion revolved around the fact that at one point, Emm had told Dana that she liked the banana Runts (yummy!) the best, which spurred a "What's your favorite Runt?" chat. ("Emm Gryner!" :-) ~KR) Also of note was the large rooster Lauren was carrying which she'd apparently "rescued" from a restaurant while in Canada during Spring break. We left about 8:30 or so, because KR needed to be at the Fez around 9ish. Lauren and the rooster were leading us, which prompted comments about "the cock leading us," and "Lauren has the cock." :-) At this point, our group split, and Dana, Lauren, KR and I went to Tower. We'd managed to lose Erica, because she'd stopped to make a phone call and had gotten separated from us in the process. KR ran into Tower, while the rest of us waited outside. Lauren produced a walkie-talkie, and KR-- who had the other one--played CDs for us until the connection broke off. When we arrived at the Time Cafe, (Erica still MIA) we all went to line up by the Fez, because the doors opened at 9:30, and we wanted to get the best seats, of course. Now comes my favorite part of the story! Lauren, Dana, KR, KC and I were chatting, when a man came up behind us, and said in a scratchy voice, "Are you here to see Holly Palmer?" Dana told him we were here to see Emm Gryner. He said, "Emm Gryner? Who is that?" So we told him. He and KR had a discussion about a David Bowie CD, and he told us that he wanted to talk to Holly about something after the show. His name was Robert ("Row Bear") He faced each one of us, and said, "Hi, my name is Robert", and shook the hand of the air in front of him, each time he said it. That should have clued us in to the fact that he marched to the beat of a different drummer, but if it hadn't, what he said next definitely did. After introducing himself to everyone, he said, "I'd like to introduce you to my buddy--" Now, as far as we could see, there was no one else with him. He glanced at the ground, as if looking for someone (on the floor?), and then stuck his arm out as though he were putting it around someone's waist, and said, "Jesus of Nazareth." At this point, Rob appeared, and Robert said, "And look, here he [Jesus] is! I didn't think that you'd look like the guy from Limp Bizkit!" Poor, poor Rob. :( Needless to say, that became everyone's favorite episode to discuss for the rest of the evening and all day yesterday. Erica reappeared thankfully, and Edward popped in, and we chatted some more until it was time to go in. We sat where we did the last time--right up front on the left-hand side of the stage so that we would have a good view of the piano. What can I say? So many people said it during the weekend--We didn't think Emm could have been better than she's been in the past, but she was. Incredible, amazing, wonderful, and a whole other host of words don't come close to describing her performance either Friday or Saturday night. This is the setlist Dana helped me scribble later on: "Big Day", "The First Day of Spring," "Southern Dreamer" (with a bit of "Good You Make" thrown in toward the end), "A Little War", "Half Sorry", "Andy of the North", "Julia", a cover of Clash's "Straight to Hell", and "Case of Tornadoes". Woohoo! :-)) The low point was when someone's cell rang during I-forget-what. Afterward, Emm said, "Cell phones off, or tell them to get their ass down here." :-) Emm said that she wasn't going to do a lot of old songs that night, and it was great to hear some new ones. I *can't wait* for Dead Relatives to come out! :-) Holly performed the Until the End of the World soundtrack again, with Emm singing background vocals on a few songs. Holly Palmer's band also spurred the conversation from September about whether or not her trumpet player looks like Julian. :-) She was awesome; however, I was kind of antsy to hear some of her own songs. After the show, we hung around to wait for Emm...Dana, Erica and I left, and then decided to go back, and the bouncer wouldn't let us back in because Erica and I aren't 21. We tried explaining that we'd *just* been in there about 5 minutes ago, but he was being stubborn. He didn't understand why all three of us needed to go in to talk to everybody. Finally when Erica offered him her wallet to hold as ransom, he took her license, and let us go back. While the Fez employees cleaned up, KR got out her walkie-talkies, and gave one to Emm, who took it upstairs. KR asked Emm if she needed "back-up", because apparently 12 naked apostles were running amuck upstairs. :-) While some of the group hung around in the city--some wanted to go see Yellow Note (a member of Holly's band) perform at The Tunnel--I think it was, at 3:30--Erica, Dana and I headed back because we, or at least I, was tired, and still had to clean and get ready for Shannon's arrival the next morning. We got back a little after 3, though I didn't go to sleep until almost 5:30--it was *light out*. :-) The highlight of the trip back was when Dana and Erica were singing "Half Sorry" loudly and proudly as we walked through the empty Path statation, only to walk down a flight of stairs to the tracks to see a large group of people staring in our direction. :-) Shannon arrived at my place in one piece around 11, a bit frazzled after a cop made her miss the campus exit. She, Erica, Dana and I had lunch at Stuff Yer Face, a campus hot spot down town, famous for its different "Bolis"--as in, "Stromboli" --and Fishbowls--these *huge* alcoholic drinks--only one per visitor. :-) After lunch, Erica went back to her apartment to shower, and Dana, Shannon and I went to the bookstore to look for a scrapbook that Dana wanted to fill for Emm, and we ended up getting something at the Hallmark store instead. We stopped in Rite-Aid to look for Runts, and found Tootsie Roll pops that were stuck in the beaks of plastic rubber chickens that featured both male and female genitalia. :-) We picked up a bunch, a Blue Raspberry Super Blo-Pop for Emm, and got some film for our cameras. We had to run back to my dorm for sweatshirts and jackets, and to get my best friend Jenny who was also coming along. We left about 3, drove to Erica's, and then repeated the trip back into the city. We were stuck in traffic, and didn't end up getting there until 5:30. Jenny and I were hungry, so we stopped at a pizza place to eat, and after several phone calls, decided we were meeting the NYC crew at a new/used CD store a few blocks from the Fez between 7 and 7:30. On the way, we stopped at K-Mart so that Dana could get crayons so we could write messages in the book for Emm. We tried finding Runts there, too, but instead walked out with "Twisted Tornado" Bubbalicious gum. :-) We were worried because Lauren, KR and KC never showed up, but we ran into them while walking to the Fez. Our wait in line was uneventful in the sense that Robert wasn't around, ;-) though we met up with Mark, who had goodies, including roll-on sparkles for Shannon. (I got an Emm watch! :-) Saturday night, Holly opened, and performed some of her own songs, most of which I really enjoyed, but don't know the names of, because I don't have her CD, though I'm sure someone could full them in. :-) I was thrilled to get to see Emm do a full show, and was happy to hear some familiar favorite songs, some of which I hadn't heard live since September. I also got to meet Kim, whom Shannon had been talking about all afternoon. :-) This morning, Shannon and I jotted down what we could remember, though I know not in the right order. :-) "Your Sort of Human Being", "Doomsday", an a cappella version of "This Mad", "Mary Jill", "Straight to Hell", "Phone Call 45", "Case of Tornadoes", "Hook Machine", "July", "Southern Dreamer" again with "Good You Make" thrown in, and "A Little War." She came out for an encore, and asked Mark what song he'd like her to play, since car trouble forced her to miss his lrc. He asked for "Big Day" and then she asked if there were any other requests before she left, and she played "Boy Races" on the piano. After the show, Dana made a presentation to Emm of everything that she had for her, and Emm took pictures with us and our lollipops. :-) We also took pictures and chatted with Holly. And then, alas, the time came for our little NJ contingent to say good-bye; of course nobody wanted to leave. There was a whole lot of hugging, once, then twice, then three times.... :) It took us awhile to get out of the parking garage, thanks to lots of cars-and we finally got back here around 3:00 (4:00, I mean, bleeah). It was, however, fun to people-watch. You never know who you'll see after midnight in NYC. We drove back to Erica's, and said good-bye to her and Dana, and then Shannon, Jenny and I came back here, and went to bed, though not before Shannon and I dragged four gigantic cushions down the hall from the lounge for me to sleep on. :) The alarm went off at 9:15, though Shannon and I both fell back asleep and didn't get up until almost 10, at which point, I walked a sleepy-eyed Shannon downstairs, signed her out, and gave her a big good-bye hug. :( And here I am, still in pjs, with sore fingers, wondering if there's anything I've forgotten to add! :-) I know people will be posting their reviews later, so you'll get to hear more stories. :-) Several people took pictures--I don't know how mine came out--and I'm sure they'll be up soon for you to enjoy. I had an amazing time--it was so great to see some of you again, and to meet new people! :-) I can't wait until FezzFest #3, when hopefully more of you will be able to make it!! :-)) ~Leigh ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Apr 2000 23:57:34 -0400 From: Lauren Schreibstein Subject: thanks to all Hey guys, I just wanted to send out a big thanks for everyone's kind birthday wishes. Especially to kr who was all sneaky and posted about my b-day and then deleted it from my inbox so I wouldn't see but then I found it when I looked through my trash. ;-) Thanks a minge kr!!! I now know how much the Lord truly loves me. My initial birthday plan, to see my "partner" as he has been deemed, didn't work out, but I got pretty flowers from him and my friend brought me ice cream and took me out to dinner where we got pretty trashed on nasty wine so it turned out to be a pretty good birthday. Also a special thanks to Leigh for her awesome review of the weekend! I had forgotten about some of that stuff and it certainly made me laugh to read about it again. You didn't tell about Holly Palmer Sinner though! kr and I bought Holly a sticker that said "Sinner" on it and decided that this should be her new official title. Umm...that's it. xo Lauren ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V3 #88 **********************************
