The Brown Sugar Website finally has it online. Although I am kinda disappointed with their choices of pictures for their online version of the article, considering they only used one of the several pictures that they used in the actual article and scammed pictures from other sources. Emm Gryner:Privately Owned By Len Ryan Cervantes Emm Gryner arrives at Lettieri, a trendy café on Toronto's trendy Queen Street strip at noon, on the dot^Å 'Canadian time', which is amazing considering the whirlwind that has enveloped Emm's schedule in the past few weeks. Even though her recent globetrotting adventures had just brought her home to Toronto just the night before, Emm is energy personified. She has a full day ahead of her, so we'll have to keep it short. I promise her that we'll only go for as long as my cassette keeps recording. In fact, I'm lucky to even have a chance to chill Emm, who has been crazy busy as of late. This past August, Emm released 'Science Fair', her third album, and first release since becoming a victim of the downsizing that occurred with Universal's acquisition of Polygram/Mercury. Undaunted and without the benefits of a huge budget, Emm recorded her newest release herself in such unlikely places as her own Toronto apartment, her brother's pad in L.A., and in a Northern Ontario cottage. The album comes on the heels of 1998's 'Public', Emm's breakthrough major-label-debut, which spawned the popular single, 'Summerlong'. Shortly after 'Science Fair's release, Emm received the opportunity of a lifetime: an offer to tour with David Bowie as a backup singer. Emm put her own tour on hold, and packed her bags, appearing on the likes of Saturday Night Live, the NetAid concert, Letterman and the WB Awards. Back home for the next few days, Emm has agreed to meet up with me for a Saturday afternoon 'chill-out' session over coffee and some really great pastries. BrownSugar: "Record company people are shady^Å" is a quote from a Tribe Called Quest song. Do you agree? Emm Gryner: I think it's a generalization. The fact is that record companies are in a music 'business' just like any other business. People aren't used to having art commercialized, packaged or sold, so I think that people get confused. When you sign a record deal, you're signing up to be a product. The goal at that point is to sell as many records as possible. Sometimes there isn't really anything artistic involved with that. BrownSugar: What did you learn about the whole experience? Emm Gryner: I learned that you can't take those kinds of things personally and you can't let it affect the way you write or make your music. BS: If the opportunity were to present itself in the near future, would you sign a major-label contract again? Emm: Not right now. I think I would do it if it got to a point where there was so much work that I couldn't do it myself. I'm not ruling it out, but right now it doesn't seem like it's the right time. I'm here to make music, and whether I'm signed to a major label or not is irrelevant in a way. It definitely changes the way I do things, but it doesn't change the vision. It doesn't change the fact that I just want to write songs. BS: How old are you? Emm: I'm 24. BS: Cool. Me too. Emm: Yeah? When's your birthday? BS: September 5. Emm: Ahh. A virgo. Virgos have a sort of energy^Å BS: Speaking of energy, where do you get it? You're off touring and writing and recording records^Å plus you run Dead Daisy, your record label^Å What's the secret? Emm: It's because I have so many people who are helping me. My fans are a big support system as well. I found that through breaking up with the major (it sounds like this big divorce) it made me realize that I really like being in charge of things. That's something I would really miss if I were to sign again. I really enjoy it, because I'm a workaholic. It fits in well with my personality. By the way, I should comment that the biscotti is very nice. BS: What would you say to aspiring musicians who want to break into the music business and release their own records? Emm: Don't do it. Just 'walk away'! Just kidding. Actually, it's really easy to do it here in Canada. There's a real support group for independent music. You can play in pretty much any of those clubs. You don't' have to cut some big deal and there's a lot of companies that will help you press your own music. There is no criteria, just as long as you believe in it. BS: Which do you like better, 'Public' or 'Science Fair'? Emm: They represent two very different stages of my life. You can't really compare. Plus, Science Fair is not a studio album like Public. It's an album that I did in two weeks. BS: Two weeks?!? (Len bugs out.) Emm: Well, I recorded it in two weeks. I think there's something about the fact that I didn't spend months and months on it, and it captures the spontaneity of writing and recording. I think that I like it more right now just because I feel like the further along I go, the more I learn, and I feel like it's a bit more personal in a way that 'Public' is not. BS: Did you have any doubts while you were going through the motions of doing everything to make this record happen? Emm: Yes. I think that happens every time I finish an album. I'm left wondering, "You know, I think the songs on the last one were better than this." I think that that's just human and it's a way of bracing your fear about what you're doing. By doing that, you're able to move on. I remember talking to my manager saying, "No one is going to like this^Å" I feel confident about it now, because I've been able to sit with it and see that I really do like the songs because they do come from my heart. BS: Many music writers have extolled the virtues of your songwriting skills. Do you have a set technique for writing your songs? Emm: It's being alone. I have to write when I'm all by myself. There's no real set time. I found that there really is no system. I used to think there was, but now it's just whenever I'm lucky. BS: Tell me a little bit about your family. Emm: My mom is from the Philippines. She was born there. She came to Canada in 1964... BS: As a nurse? Emm: As a nurse! Yeah, how'd you know! "Geez how'd you guess"? My dad is Canadian but his background is Irish and German. I also have 2 brothers. BS: How did your family react when you told them that you wanted to become a musician and make records for a living? Was there any friction? Emm: There was some resistance around the time that I decided what college to go to. Choosing recording school meant that I wasn't going to go to university, get the degree, blahblahblah. I think that they had a problem with that. But like most parents, the minute they see an article in the newspaper, you're nominated for an award... BS: THEN they're on your side! Emm: Yeah! It's like anything, as long as I was trying hard at something, and achieving what they see as some small successes, they were happy. In a way, it's their fault that I got into music anyway. They started us off in piano lessons (like every good Asian family) they really encouraged us to be really creative and to think for ourselves... so, its their fault that I'm in rock and roll. BS: Tell me a little bit about your hometown, Forest, Ontario. Emm: 2800 people. Well, there are a lot of trees, hence the name... Forest. It's a small farming community. Very much a 'dutch' community. BS: Were you treated any different while you were growing up, because you have that Filipino background, and Forest is not the most ethnically diverse place? Emm: Actually, no. Some people might say that that was like growing up in a sheltered environment. I knew that I had this Asian background although I didn't know what it was. So in way, it was like "I don't know what it's like to experience any sort of conflict or discrimination". Coming out into the world and seeing that it does exist, it does affect me in a large sense because I don't know what that's like. That's how I wish the world was, a place where those kinds of differences aren't the focus. BS: What's your favourite thing that your mom cooks (because all Filipino moms can COOK)? Emm: Ummm... see, my mom does cook Filipino food, but she doesn't really cook it too much anymore. She still does the odd 'noodle action' though. And leche flan... she's down with that. BS: Since you're mestiza, you're forced to deal with the duality of having two cultures to identify with. How do you approach this? Emm: I'm slowly getting to know each side of it. I'm learning tagalog right now. BS: Wow. So, how's that going? Emm: VERY slowly. And on the other side, I've been to Ireland to see where my roots are there. I'm equally interested in both. The more family members I meet, the more interested I am in it. BS: Why do you think so many young Filipinos go to your shows? Emm: Because they have good taste in music? Maybe? (Emm places her pinky on her lip and does her best Dr. Evil impression.) That's my 'Austin Powers'. Actually, I really, really enjoy that. BS: Are you happy? Emm: Very happy, thank you. Especially with the biscotti here at Lettieri. BS: No, no. I mean are you happy with where you are in life. What's the ultimate goal? Emm: You know, it's funny because that changes all the time. I think that a few years ago, I equated the ultimate goal with a statistic, or record sales or something like that. But it changes all the time and that's what makes it exciting. That might be a wish-washy answer, but really, its like every day is kind of like there's a different thing to reach for and embrace. BS: Here's the generic interview question: where do you see yourself in 5 years? Emm: "Ok dad". I don't plan to stop making records. I want to tour the world in one way, shape or form. That's always been something that I wanted to do. BS: Is making records what you want to do for the rest of your life? Or are there any other dreams down the road? Will you be making music until the day you die? Emm: No, that's how I feel right now. It's impossible to predict. There are so many exciting things to do, so to decide right now would probably be limiting myself in some way. BS: What's coming up? Emm: I'll be touring, and then taking about a month off to write my next album. BS: Science Fair has been out since late summer. It's knocking the critics dead, and it's what... number #4 on the college charts? Will you be releasing any more singles off it? Emm: We'll see. It's a different kind of album... it's not like 'Public' with all these radio-friendly songs. I'm going to shoot the video very soon... it really depends on how the album is received. It's really too early to tell. BS: Okay, according to Emm Gryner, what is the meaning of life? "CLICK" Suddenly, almost as if an omen... the tape stops. Before I can remember to ask the final question again, Emm is headed out the door as fast as she arrived. We exchange thank yous, and I wish her luck. The tour that she had postponed begins on Monday, so she's off to get some gear for the road. It's just as well, because I'm pretty sure that Emm wouldn't give me a straight answer to that last question. If I could hazard a guess, I would imagine that she would tell me that the meaning of life is something that is constantly evolving and ever changing, and that maybe it's something that we define as we go along.
