Basically I wanted to repost an old message from the summer, about a really good article about Aimee that appeared in the NY Times on July 11: >---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 02:44:19 -0400 >From: Steve I >Subject: major label woes > >Heya Emmbassadors... > >just read a really sobering article in the NY Times about the music >industry, in particular the major labels, and their obsession with the "hit >single". It's really interesting especially in light of the discussion on >HG recently about videos and so on. The article's about Aimee Mann, who >many people, myself included, think is one of the finest songwriters of her >generation. She's been screwed around for many many years by a succession >of major labels, and most lately by Mercury and then Interscope. It's >really enough to make us all thank our lucky stars that Emm went indie again. > >You have to register to view it, but it's free so just pick a random >username and password: > >http://www.nytimes.com/library/magazine/home/19990711mag-music-mann.html > >Steve >------------------------------ Seems they don't require the username and password anymore. The article is *required reading* for Aimee Mann fans, and highly recommended for Emm fans. You'll think about her a lot while reading this article, and not just because they were both dropped as a result of the same label merger. I haven't seen Magnolia yet or heard Aimee's songs from it, but I can hardly wait, I've been a big fan of hers for a long time. It's good to hear that she's getting success with it. I hope both she and Emm get huge, if only to rub it in the noses of the nitwits at Mercury/Polygram/Interscope/Seagram. Now with the release of the movie MAGNOLIA, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and the album, 'Music From the Motion Picture Magnolia', these two creative forces have fashioned a new way to see and hear the movies. Comprised of eight MANN originals, a cover of the Harry Nillsson classic 'One' and a pair of Supertramp classics, the memento and inspiration behind the movie, should be no less inspirational live. APOLLO FOUR FORTY - At Lee's Palace in Toronto on Sunday, February 27/00. In a decade that has seen electronic music grow to reach a global audience, APOLLO FOUR FORTY have always managed to stay at the forefront of dance and club culture. Founded in Liverpool in 1990, APOLLO FOUR FORTY has been making classic dance tracks since the beginning. Throw in the fact that the boys in the band have been busy mixing for the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Manic Street Preachers and Puff Daddy and you realize that they have a mission: to introduce the world to their original daft punk mixed with electronic chaos. With the release of their third album 'Getting High On Your Own Supply', APOLLO FOUR FORTY has launched themselves onto another fearless exploration into diverse sounds, combining new musical elements with some live rock 'n' roll into their already dense, seamless weave of techno, drum 'n' bass and electronica funk. Come see what the fuss is all about. TARA MacLEAN - At The Phoenix Concert Theatre in Toronto on Wednesday, March 8/00 Discovered while singing on a B.C. ferry, TARA MacLEAN released her debut album 'Silence' in 1997. Critical acclaim soon followed as well as 2 years of straight touring for the likes of Paula Cole, The Barenaked Ladies, Garbage and dates on various Lilith Fairs. Now TARA has released 'Passenger', an album laced with apocalyptic imagery and themes surrounding birth, death and rebirth. TARA MacLEAN will be joined by special guest DIDO. BELA FLECK AND THE FLECKTONES - At the Warehouse in Toronto on Wednesday, March 8/00. Bela Fleck. Jeff Cofflin. Victor Lemonte. Future Man. Four individuals. One unique vision. As BELA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES they travel between the lines that separate pop, funk, jazz, rock, folk, classical and bluegrass. With their latest release, 'Left of Cool', BELA FLECK & THE FLECKTONES continue to use their artistry and imagination, crossing formats and combining genres in the compelling ways that continues to wow critics, win over audiences and always, have the respect of their peers. Their last performance in Toronto sold out in a matter of days and this date promises the same quick sell. TINA TURNER - At the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Sunday, June 4/00 TINA TURNER is back - with a vengeance. Her latest album 'Twenty Four Seven' was released yesterday and she is taking this occasion to announce her return to what she does best - entertaining live audiences with unprecedented energy and enthusiasm - a delivery that would wear out wannabes a third of her age. Renowned for her classics such as 'What's Love Got To Do With It', 'Private Dancer', 'Simply The Best', 'I Don't Want To Fight' and her latest single 'When The Heartache Is Over', Tina maintains one of the most indestructible, original voices in soul music. With six decades of live experience behind her, she can not help but make you love her, root for her and respect her. Joining Tina is another legend in his own right ... Mr. Lionel Richie who has for as long as we can remember, been crooning and dancing along with his slew of hits including 'Hello', 'All Night Long' and 'Dancin' On The Ceiling'. Oh, damn, looks like Canadian Music Week is gonna be quite the minefield to navigate... As far as I can tell, Emm, Sarah Slean, and Ivanna Santilli are all playing the same night, March 3rd. The ad in NOW this week for the Horseshoe lists Jay Englishman, Starling, and Emm as all playing there March 3, but the CMW site shows Starling are scheduled that night for right before Ivanna at the Reverb at 11 pm. Okay, then... The CMW site says Sarah Slean is at C'est What that night at 11, followed by her friend Sarah Harmer at 12, preceded by their pal Feist at 10. I'm going to have to flip a coin or something between *that* show and the Emm one, honestly, Transistor Sound and Lighting Co. notwithstanding, because that's one killer lineup right there. Unless Emm goes on at 12, in which case we *might* be able to hightail it from C'est What to the 'Shoe (and get in? Ha! ;-P)... Of course, by the time March rolls around, they'll have *completely* messed around with the schedule, so I'm getting worked up already for nothing, probably... I don't know *why* they insist on putting up the incomplete schedule already and driving us crazy... Anyhow, Tab's picks for CMW as the schedule appears right now (choose wisely! ;)): Thurs, March 2: C'est What - Tegan and Sara @ 11 pm, Hawksley Workman @ 12 Ted's Wrecking Yard - Martha Wainwright @ 11, Andy Stochansky @ 12 Lee's Palace (for the kids that just gotta rock ;)) - Killer Elite @ 11, Tricky Woo @ 12 Friday, March 3: C'est What - Feist @ 10, Sarah Slean @ 11, Sarah Harmer @ 12 Horseshoe - (apparently, no details yet) - Emm/Starling?/J. Englishman Reverb - Starling @ 11 (?), Ivanna Santilli @ 12 Saturday, March 4: C'est What - Laura Repo @ 11, Rebecca Timmons @ 12 Holy Joe's - Jorane @ 10, Michaela Foster Marsh @ 12 All I can say is, get a pair of comfortable shoes, kids. It's gonna be a doozy. ;-) - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Feb 2000 20:09:13 -0500 (EST) From: "Julian C. Dunn" Subject: that Aimee Mann article Okay, I am sure that by now you've ALL heard way too much from me about Aimee (especially if you are on FTE) so I'll make this brief. 1. Thank GOD Emm had the foresight to (a) negotiate a decent contract with Mercury so that when she got dumped, she didn't get screwed over; and (b) is smart enough to know that you never really attain artistic freedom unless you break free of the major labels. Unless, of course, the way you practice your craft is exactly coincident with the kinds of things that make money for the record company. I hope Emm _never_ goes back to dealing with a major label, and I also worry about Sarah Slean's recent signing to Warner. 2. It would seem that Aimee's battle with the record company is no different than any other employee working for a large corporation. Think about it -- you take a corporate job, and the next thing you know, you are getting screwed over by the human resources department, or your manager. To quote Aimee: "The dream was that I would work with people and they would be helpful, and if I was having a tough time, they would be understanding and we'd all sort of work together. But that doesn't happen, and I don't believe it ever will." The problem is that the corporation's inherent objective is to make the most money possible for the owners, or the shareholders of the corporation, and you are really only a tool for the directors to achieve that means. They don't really care about your interests or your initiative, unless it coincides with theirs and it makes them a bundle of money. Hence, you wind up doing what they tell you to do, as opposed to what you WANT to do. Corporations always pay lip service to the line, "We encourage innovation", but they don't really mean it. But maybe it's just me. :) - - Julian [ Julian C. There was an *awesome* feature a long long long time ago on MM... They showed the vids for "Your Sort of Human Being," "Hello Aquarius" and then did a feature w/ Emm in a boxing place. ;) They also showed live clips. It was very cool.... they should rerun it... One thing I like about MM vs. the disgustingly corporate US Version--MTV-- is that they actually cover up and coming artists--they've already done features on Maren Ord and were a long time ago, before she ever signed her Nettwerk/Capitol deal... they've done stuff on Emm, Sarah Slean, etc., etc., etc... they go to shows and show live clips, etc. I *never* see stuff like this on MTV (granted, I also never watch MTV)... they are far too busy doing shite like "Total Request Live" from Times Square featuring the maniacal screaming of prepubesent little girls dying to be the next BritMariahChristina, etc. Ick. 120 Minutes on MTV *sometimes* plays something by Tori Amos/Beck/Fiona Apple, but I doubt they ever would have at the beginning of their careers... Anyway, I just think it's cool that Much Music (East and West) go out of their way sometimes to show new artists/what is happening/live shows/etc. I have tapes from way back when no one knew who Tara MacLean was, and they were there for her "Silence" CD release party, etc. and support her along the way... I have to say that MusiquePlus is also an amazing channel... I watched hours and hours of it when I was in Vancouver recording my album... Cool that you wrote them Rannie, maybe they'll give artists like Emm/Sarah Slean/Andy Stochansky/Rennan/and all the other amazing Canadian talents out there more airplay... See some of you tomorrow night at the LRC here...
