But there's one big difference. Twenty-four-year-old Emm Gryner is making it on her own, without a major record company behind her. Gryner says she doesn't need the help of a big label - she's got the Internet. The cyber-savvy indie singer/songwriter is distributing her new CD, Science Fair, through her own online label, Dead Daisy Records. She's a one-woman orchestra (playing piano, bass and other instruments ) and production engineer, recording her tracks in a rented cottage and in her brother's apartment. The budding mini music mogul is also mining new talent from the indie scene by signing artists to her label. Gryner's online independence has earned her new fans, including superstar David Bowie, whose musical director hired Gryner to sing back-up on Bowie's recent tour to promote his new album. Gryner was in disbelief when she got the call. "When I put down the phone, a friend of mine... she walked in and just looked at me like something was wrong, I was just standing there, partially frozen. I didn't believe it was actually happening." Thanks to Bowie, Gryner has been on tour with him in Paris, Dublin, Milan, Copenhagen, Sweden and Spain. But it was in New York where she got a backstage view of stardom. "It was pretty surreal," Gryner confesses. "SNL [Saturday Night Live] and Letterman were two of the first things we did. I was just really excited to be there. "It's an amazing thing to experience, going through shows with someone [like Bowie], because it gives you that insight especially when you, hopefully, do them yourself." Emm Gryner has been doing things herself since she was young girl growing up in a small town in Ontario. At five, she was taking piano lessons. By 11, she was writing songs. By 14, she had taught herself bass guitar. She played in her first concert with her two brothers atop a flatbed truck. Her first big break came when a Toronto radio station named her winner of a songwriting contest. The $5,000 prize was enough to pay for studio time. The result? Her first indie record, The Original Leap Year. A marketing pro, Gryner put part of her money toward a publicist who created a local buzz. Somehow, one article found its way to a Canadian producer in New York. By a stroke of good luck, he ordered the CD and then passed it along onto Mercury Records. Executives liked Gryner's lyrical style: confessional yet poetic. They signed her, launching her major record career. Gryner flew to London to record a slick, Brit pop influenced record, Public. She also got some high-powered help, courtesy of the London Session Orchestra and former bandmates of Paul McCartney and Massive Attack. Gryner's luck was quick to run out though. Soon after Public's debut last year, there was trouble. In a mega-merger, Mercury's parent company, Polygram joined forces with Universal Music. Gryner got lost in the corporate shuffle. Some artists may have thought that was a career-ending turn of events, but not Gryner. "When I got dropped from Mercury, I think the vibe from a lot of people was ŒOh, she's dropped.' They have a really negative outlook, you have to overpower that. "I think it became a turning point for me to take control of my career. And make a statement that you don't have to spend ridiculous amounts of money to put out an album that people enjoy and people can be moved by. The minute when you take control of your life and career, good things happen." Good things like hooking up with David Bowie. Onstage, she'd sing back up. Offstage, the two would discuss the power of the Internet and its impact on music. Bowie was so impressed with Gryner's website that he offered to link up his site to hers. For the indie artist, the Internet is a unique way to reach people and promote her work. "The minute when you take control of your life and career, good things happen." Through her mailing list of 1,200 fans, she compiled a list of people she calls "Emmbassadors" fans willing to host an Emm Gryner mini-concert in their homes. The "living room shows" allow the Emmbassadors' family and friends to meet and hear Gryner in person. Grynner says the concerts have been a big hit. "They range from 14 and 15 year olds - their parents are there, putting out pretzels and pop - to people more my age... it's more a party atmosphere. "It's really interesting. You're with these people from the minute you get there Œtil you leave. [It's an] extra challenge, in a show, you have that space, to do that transformation from regular person to performer. [It's] an extra challenge, makes people more comfortable and you can chat with them." Since moving to Toronto a few years ago, Gryner has been a regular at clubs like C'est What - the same place that nurtured an aspiring singer named Jewel. Gryner hopes to continue chatting with her fans, either in person or via her website. Gryner still manages to answer her own email. But if she continues her cyber ride to the top of the music world, that could change. Ironically, Gryner is once again attracting the attention of the big leagues - four major record labels and counting. But this time, Gryner isn't so eager to give up her indie status - why should she when she's got herself and the Internet?
