You know, you're all right. I should tear down everything Emm Gryner that I have right now. I should burn her CDs and never listen to them because I have people telling me I want to "BE" Emm Gryner. She obviously influences my music, so I might as well stop songwriting, because the world already has an Emm Gryner. And I think I'll dye my hair blonde and chop it off because people tell me I look like Emm too, so i must be "trying" to look like her. Oh, and dye my skin too, though that may be expensive, I'll have to consult Michael Jackson. My own friends and family back home make fun of how much I've seen Emm in concert. I don't go to all of these shows and sit in the corner by myself! I have made so many friends(probably better than the ones I have here) from going to shows and THEY are the reason I go. Emm's shows give me a reason to go see my out of state/country friends. Like the NY living room shows...I am going to visit Lauren at NYU and while I'm at it, I'm going to see my good friends Jessica and Mark again. And from what I hear, other friends of mine will be there as well. They came all the way to Michigan for my living room show, so I want to repay them by going to theirs. And I happen to like promoting Emm here in the states. Everyone I've introduced her music to is addicted to her now. So I'm sorry if my actions seem a bit overwhelming, but I just believe in the power of Emm's music and I believe that she will have great success and be a huge star and I want to be a part of it. I'm reading these postings and it makes me wonder.... Well not really, I just want to post. hehehe (just kidding). But I think it all comes down to that we all love Emm. There's no doubting that. We all have a Shrine of her, if it's not on our walls in our room it's in our CD players or it's on websites (http://emmsfans.arecool.net ) But we all do appreciate what Emm has done for us. She definitely has brought us all together in some sort of way. Before Trish introduced me to Emm, I really was having a boring life. But through Emm, Trish and I have become great friends, I've met a lot of people who are now practically my best friends....hi to Trish (best friend) Laura (to funny, like my little sis), Rob, Steve Ito (da man), Kristy (my hyper buddy), "Shannon, Lauren, Chelle, Andy" (my IM buddies), Rannie (da man II), Roberto (my calm down bro), Mark Urban (woo hoo!), Megan (eventhough I've never met you, but come Feb I'll have to pleasure to), Jessica W. (you are too cool), Rayanne (sexy mama), Steve McGrath (da man III), and who can forget Emm (the one and only), and everyone else that I've met. Sorry if I missed anyone, it wasn't on purpose . So yeah, a lot of use worship Emm, someone of us wish we could be as cool as Emm, and some of us wish we could have Emm's life. But with the shrines that are all over the place, Emm definitely knows she's doing something right. Because everyone I've met and know now are soooo cool and I love all of you guys! Without Trish and especially without Emm, I probably would still have the boring life I had 1½ years ago. Talk to you all soon! Peace out and stuff like that..... Just wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy New Year! New Year's was magical. The show itself was amazing of course, although I do wish they could have let Emm finish out her set after the countdown. But the best thing of all was being able to spend the millenium moment with some of the coolest people on earth. As I said, a magical time. Trish was leaving surprise gifts for people in the Green Room, Lauren made a new friend, Alvin (da man!) and Laura were apparently on some boat together, Andrea turned into a "grouch" at the stroke of 8:30am (her word, not mine!), Kristy conveniently "forgot" her wallet and had people buying her drinks all night, later she disappeared with a mysterious stranger, and Roberto offered a prize in a contest that no one wanted to win (at least, *I* didn't). OK, so some of the magic was fuelled by wine and a few other interesting beverages. As the sole non-drinker in the crowd, I can report on these things. :-) Anyway I hope I can still call you all friends after telling on you like this, I had an amazing time with everyone. It was great to finally meet Lauren, Laura, and Alvin (Da Man!). And Roberto, Andrea, Trish, and Kristy, I love you guys. It was great to see Stephen McGrath play with Emm, since it'll probably be his last show with Emm for awhile; he goes on a world tour soon with new Canuck boy band Soul Decision. You'll all have to come up for their show in Toronto in March; they're on a bill with them wacky boys Simon and Milo (Prozzak). And of course Emm. I think a lot of artists, coming off a European tour with David Bowie, would get inflated egos and perhaps forget the people that got them there. Not Emm. Did everyone know that she put us all on her guest list, and booked and paid for our room, in the same hotel she was staying at? How many other artists would go that far out of their way for their fans? Especially fans who return the favour by TP'ing her car? Hey, it wasn't us *Canadian* fans. :-) And I never thanked her for it. Emm, if you happen to read this somehow, thank you, thank you, thank you! Emm's a star, and one of the very rare kind that likes to pull everyone up into the heavens with her. It was quite a year and quite a millenium, well, what little I witnessed of it anyways. It is not that she is afraid of large crowds -- not after touring as a backup singer with David Bowie for three months this fall and appearing on such television shows as Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. What Gryner, 24, loves about her "living room tour" -- the concert series she held recently in homes across North America -- is the intimacy. "It is more personal, and what I really love about it is you are there and the fans are there and no one else in between," Gryner, a native of Forest, Ont., says in an interview fresh from the Bowie tour. "A lot of times at a show I've had to deal with record company people or at every major show there is a critic, or just people who just don't really want to be there. That is the beauty of the living room show, it is just you and the fans and nothing else matters." Gryner, whose sings melancholy acoustic ballads -- a bit like Sarah McLachlan, but with some edge -- started the tour in Ontario, first in a house, and then on a horse farm, before moving to rec rooms and backyards in Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Although attendance at each performance was small, ranging from 20 to 50 people, Gryner's gimmick caught the attention of the celebrity talk show Donny and Marie, where she plans to make an appearance next year. Gryner will also perform in living rooms in New York and New Jersey in February, before doing similar shows in Europe later in the year. The idea of playing in peoples' private dwellings came out of a brainstorming session Gryner had with her New York-based manager, Michael Murphy. Murphy, who has worked with Treble Charger, Junkhouse and Kim Stockwood, encouraged Gryner to get on the Internet and start soliciting venues. "We got a really good response," Gryner recalls during the interview, on a couch inside Gypsy Co-op, a restaurant in Toronto's hip Queen Street West neighbourhood. Gryner took a few pointers from a Web site about living room tours and hit the road in May. The drill, she says, is to show up at the house around 6 p.m., sit around and chat, warm up in a quiet room, play for a half hour, chat some more, then leave. There is no cover charge, but Gryner uses the opportunity to sell her CDs, including 1998's Public, and her latest, Science Fair, released in August. "I kind of see them as little adventures," Gryner says of the more than 20 living room dates she has played so far. "There are the ones where people bring out the cases of beer, and then the ones where mom comes out with the bowl of pretzels. I find them all exciting for different reasons." What also makes the living room show different from the more traditional concert is the warm-up period, something Gryner says you don't get much of in a home. "It takes an adjustment. The first one was difficult because, as a performer, you are used to playing in a club where you have that time between sound check and the show to transform yourself, whereas the living room show you have to be ready the moment you pull into the driveway." Gryner says warming up in someone's bedroom where they have pictures of her on the wall is also a bit weird. "It is kind of a nice feeling, though, the feeling like it might possibly be an exciting thing for them to have you in their house." Gryner is using the living room tour to plug her latest album, put out on her private label, Dead Daisy Records. The artist decided to revert to her private label after being dumped last year by Mercury records, which put out Public. The label dropped Gryner following the $10.4-billion (US) merger of Seagram Co.'s Universal Music and PolyGram NV. Montreal-based Seagram needed to save money following its label's high-profile marriage and cut dozens of acts, including Gryner and her six-record contract. "It is the age-old story that happens to hundreds of artists," Gryner recalls of her final days with the majors. "It was a business decision ... It would have been nice if they actually said 'sorry' but that is not the way it works." Gryner is leery now of signing with another record company. Although she has been approached, the singer says she likes running her own Dead Daisy Records, a title that comes from lyrics in her song Your Sort of Human Being, which appears on both Public and her first album, 1996's The Original Leap Year, which she released on her own label. "Sometimes I think I'm missing out on opportunities not being with a big label, but on the other hand, the climate of the music industry is not one that supports artists who want to make records their entire career. They are very geared towards one-hit wonders," she says. "Until I find someone who works with me for a long time I have no interest in signing a record deal." Being free has also allowed Gryner the opportunity to tour with Bowie -- a gig she was offered five days before hitting the road in late September. Gryner sang backup with Holly Palmer, another of her agent Murphy's clients, at concerts in cities such as Copenhagen, Dublin, London and Paris. There were also television spots, including MusiquePlus' two-hour special that aired recently on MuchMore Music. Bowie was a mix of a "father figure and a kid" to Gryner during the tour. "He takes an interest in what everyone in the band is doing, down to me and I'm the rookie," says Gryner, whose first tour was in 1997 with Spirit of the West. She later backed The Philosopher Kings. "He is down to Earth for someone who has just been so many places and done so many things in his life. You kind of expect him to be over everything but he has a thirst for knowledge and is extremely intelligent and witty." While out with Bowie, Gryner said she was not starstruck despite spending time at parties with rock icons such as Mick Jagger and Annie Lennox. Gryner was also one of the opening acts for Alanis Morissette during her stop in Winnipeg this summer and did some Lilith Fair dates before joining Bowie's band. Music has long been part of Gryner's life. She started writing lyrics at age 11, following the lead of her two older brothers, one of whom is still in the business doing work with such acts as Tommy Lee. The first song Gryner wrote was as a teenager at summer camp, about one of the male counsellors she had a crush on, but who fancied a blond, blue-eyed girl instead. The counsellor e-mailed Gryner recently after reading she had written a song about him, but the artist politely brushed him off. While it appears Gryner has come a long way from her small-town roots, the artist believes her career is moving at the proper pace. "I see it all happening very naturally. It doesn't feel very fast, but it doesn't feel like it is taking forever for things to happen either," she says. "If I woke up tomorrow and sold millions of records that would be nice, but it would also feel like an unnatural jump." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Jan 2000 20:13:08 -0500 (EST) From: "Julian C. Hey, That was really cool of her to do that -- I'd heard about it from Andrea but I didn't realize that she'd paid for the room too. Wow. Emm is definitely a wonderful person! I don't think I could name a single other artist that would do something like that for his/her fans. > It was quite a year and quite a millenium, well, what little I witnessed of > it anyways. And that's just one instance of her coolness, I could give tons of other examples, that few if any others know about. She's generous, not in a flashy ostentatious way like most public figures, but in a low-key, genuine way. Emm's one of a kind. >> Tab, Paul, Jess, Youlian, Rannie, Chelle, Mark, Bob, and hopefully will > >(that's in revenge for the Shito remark, no doubt :-P ) Nah, it's just fun to say. YOOOlian. Steve P.S. By the way, I can think of another person who quietly gives his time and energy expecting nothing in return. I don't think Julian gets enough credit for quietly running great mailing lists for both Emm and Sarah Slean. We've had some growing pains but we've got a nice little community of fans and friends now, don't we? That really reflects well on our list administrator. And that's not even mentioning the Aquezada/Aquedeza (heheh) thing. Three cheers for Julian! I don't really have anything fresh to add to this topic, but I would like to say that I agree whole-heartedly. We were "this close" to sleeping in Trish's car and let me tell you that car is NOT big. We were all pretty much in shock when we showed up at the sportsplex and were on the guest list. Thanks to Kristy for helping to arrange all of that too. > (heheh) thing. Three cheers for Julian! Julian rocks! YAY for Julian! The holiday card I received from him was definitely the funniest card I've seen in a while. I mean, it's no Curious George plate but Toronto doesnt have that Curious George Plate Factory so what can you expect? I'd also like to point out that I made A FEW new friends in Sarnia, not just one. It was my first time hanging out with Steve and Laura, both kick ass people and it was also my first time meeting Stephen or Dan. So let's not discriminate now mmm'kay?
