Okay, well, since most of the folks who were there have already given the rundown on the show (which was absolutely wonderful, of course - *so* nice to see Emm again, we'd missed her at home! :)), I'll just add my 2 cents here... Jodel wrote, re: "Idaho": >the night as the song is angelic. Emm intro's it as "A new song I >wrote, >about a married man! Is that okay?". *Beautiful* song. Someone had mentioned earlier that she was so emotional while playing it in London that she'd seemed on the verge of crying. Well, ditto for this show - I was worried she was going to dissolve into tears at one point! Got a little emotional myself... ;-) >"Protection" by Massive Attack, Trish? Is that right?? Yep, that's it. Emm's version, with just her on bass and Stephen on drums, was completely mind-blowing. The crowd just sat there in stunned silence after the song before breaking into wild applause. I know she played it earlier in the set in London, but I think it works really well as the last song of the set, as in T.O. - it really packs a punch. James wrote: >I liked it! I'm not always the biggest Ron Sexsmith fan, but the >last two >performances I've seen have really wowwed me! Though during Same here. I think he's an incredibly talented songwriter, I have all his albums, but his voice doesn't do much for me. I think he really shines live, with his great band (I joked to James that what with the 2 Rheostatics guys, it was like being at a Rheos show! ;)) and wry, gentle humor. >"Wastin' Time" (the piano one) I whispered to Tab, "Holy, Rufus > >Wainwright!" Whoa! I Totally. It was uncanny. :) >(3) Feel for You My fave of the evening, for sure. That Ron plays a mean electic geetar. ;-) > >If anyone can fill in the blanks (Tab?!) please do. Darn, sorry, it's been a few days, and I didn't keep a setlist, so I can't remember... :( He didn't play "Clown in Broad Daylight", did he? I was waiting and waiting for that one, but he didn't play it while I was there (I left a couple songs early)... What else?... Well, Emm's set definitely ranked way up there with some of the best shows I've ever seen her do - in fact, I was so blown away with how good she was that I remarked to my seatmates James, Rannie, and Yasmin afterwards that I wouldn't be surprised if we never see Emm at our tiny local watering holes anymore. The "surprise", Holly Palmer :), was delightful - Steve and I spoke to her for quite a while in the intermission, and she was the sweetest thing. Told us some hilarious stories and was shocked to hear that I'd heard of her years ago and had her first CD. I'd always wondered what it would sound like if Emm had a female backup singer - she's never really had one before ever, except for maybe doing an impromptu singalong with pal Sarah Slean back in the day when they'd play together, but Holly sounded really great with her, like they'd been playing together forever. And then on her own song, "Something Else" (which I loved - the melody is *still* stuck in my head), Emm and Stephen backed her up expertly. Like Holly raved to us, the venue was awesome, perfect for the show - the sound was very warm and expansive, well-suited to the more acoustic bent of both Emm and Ron. Too bad there aren't more shows there - but then again, the ones that *do* play there are almost always fabulous performers. Looks like we're going to be seeing some more great shows coming up there soon - Moxy Fruvous with Dar Williams December 8 and Jane Sibbery's annual Xmas show December 20. :) - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V2 #276 ***********************************
