(she's done it a few times since.) two, i -really- paid attention to the lyrics, which is something that doesn't always happen at a live show. now, some more notes: (a) rayanne sounded like jewel used to sound like, not like the sound she has after the producers butchered spirit. (b) i haven't noticed any similarities recently. maybe rayanne's style has changed a bit. oh yeah, i'm a jewel -fan- not a jewel basher, so the comparison would be a positive one. i can't stand when reviewers make comparisons for the sole purpose of trashing the artists they're using as a comparison. "anywhere but here" soundtrack - for the best mix of all our fave lilith ladies, plus a few other great women rockers and if you don't have the new chantal album yet, what the heck are you waiting for? most of the songs on there are unbelievably breathtaking. dana ------------------------------ Date: 1 Nov 99 16:59:33 EST From: JODEL JIMENEZ Subject: (OAC) Under These Mails and Notes oh yeah! i really like that song "lucky" >and am thinking of getting it... i don't think "lucky" is very representative of the entire album. i love that song, and i love the album, but it's one of the softer ones. most of the others are more rock-sounding and pretty loud. the lyrics are really good too. the thing i'd say most about bif is that she's real. there's not a lot of allusion or hidden meanings in her songs. very straightforward. > >...also, i didn't like the new chantal single i heard but what is the rest of >the album like? i am a HUGE fan of her producer jay joyce who worked with the >awesome patty griffin (her newest album smokes!!) and i like his own band >work (iodine).... tell me more. :) ok, first few times i heard "before you" i was not impressed. too pop sounding, right? but it hooked me, it grew on me. and now i like listening to it because it makes me smile. it's a feel good song. and with a lot of the rather serious subjects chantal hits on, it's a refresher. but, it's not like the entire album either. there are many songs where the lyrics are just brilliant, her voice is raw and powerful, and the music is beautiful. standouts (in my opinion) include: until we die, souls, M, far away, and eve. especially eve. the song almost makes me cry. it's like "surrounded" to me, and "souls" is my wayne. but there aren't too many similarities between CM&S and UTR&S. this album is more produced, but i really really love it. her voice just shines. it could use a little more solo piano parts, but otherwise i give HIGH recommendations for the album. and no, it's not out in the US yet. not till early next year. which means she won't be touring the US until god knows when. order it from a&b sound, or chapters, or one of those online retailers. the album comes in a 2-CD case with a bonus disc (like the limited edition of surfacing), which includes "leaving on a jet plane" (diff. from the armageddon version - strings instead of harmonica), "feels like home," and "in my life." a great addition. :) you can't go wrong, especially with the canadian exchange rate. i don't think you can go wrong with either album. and to repeat myself and quote mark, "Yay for Lauren Christy!!!". everyone do yourself a favor and buy her album because it ROCKS. and it is addictive. one of my ex-coworkers used to say lauren christy was her goddess. what i would do to see her perform live.... dana ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Nov 1999 17:36:12 -0800 (PST) From: laura robeson Subject: to the teeth (was Re: LONDON ONTARIO) Oh my gosh those lyrics are sooo awesome!! i didn't think it was possible to love ani any more than i do but this song just demands even more respect.. i just turned in a huge essay evaluating Ani's career and seperation from mainstream music, etc. and i wish i would've had this for it 'cause it totally illustrates her standing point on corporate america and media, i love it. this makes me 100 times more anxious for her album, stop teasing me!! :) but no seriously, thanks so much for posting it Jess, where the heck are you getting all this inside stuff?? Actually I've read the lyrics to another fave, "Hello, Birmingham" or someting like that too, and they are just as deep... (About abortion clinic shootings). I think this album is going to be really powerful... she's taken a different direction with this one too... and, how amazing is this? This is her second album in 9 months--3rd if you include one she did w/ Utah Phillips. << seperation from mainstream music, etc. and i wish i << would've had this for it 'cause it totally illustrates << her standing point on corporate america and media, i << love it. this makes me 100 times more anxious for her << album, stop teasing me!! :) but no seriously, thanks Yeah, totally. Except one thing, which was actually talked about in the newsgroups recently, kind of makes you think: She goes off about MTV and stuff all the time, yet has done several specials for them... Also "32 Flavors" was featured on some football thing on a major network ... So maybe she's starting to give a little bit as far as corporations are concerned? I dunno... Anyway, I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for her lyrics and her music.... Especially the lyrics... A lot of people can sit down and write a song...not a lot of people can craft songs that are intelligent/sarcastic/witty/depressing/moving/and beautiful the way she can..... >> so much for posting it Jess, where the heck are you >> getting all this inside stuff?? :) On the 'net, of course ;) Jessica www.aquezada.com/jess / www.mp3.com/jessweiser "one more girl on top of billboard. one more girl jumping in with the big boys. one more year and i'm still a no one. waiting for my day in the sun" -kf ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Nov 1999 20:41:40 -0800 (PST) From: laura robeson Subject: Re: to the teeth (was Re: LONDON ONTARIO) Jess- Yep, you're exactly right.. last week I heard Worthy on Chicago Hope and 32 Flavors on Party of Five so she's not exactly totally boycotting pop-culture. But oh well, I'll let it slide just 'cause it's her.. :) And yeah it is her 2nd album in 9 months, which is exactly what I noted in my essay about her.. I said that even though her releases are so frequent, she has the ability, like a baby, to totally mature and evolve in each one, given the considerably short amount of time. I'm gonna have to send that to you and see what you think of it :) Now seriously, if you don't tell me where these lyrics are hidden, I'm gonna have to .. I don't know what, but I'll think of something bad! :) ~laura __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
