I was just looking through yesterday's Ottawa Citizen, and what do I find in the arts section?! a review of Science Fair! here 'tis... IMPRESSIVE GRYNER EFFORT MAY PUT FOREST, ONT., ON THE MUSICAL MAP Emm Gryner **** Science Fair (Independent) We'd never heard of Forest, Ont., until we read the bio of what must be the town's most talented singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. We're still not sure where Forest is, but after a listen to this impressive debut[1] we know where Gryner fits on the musical spectrum - --somewhere in Sheryl Crow-Tori Amos-Sinead O'Connor territory. And those comparisons are not made frivolously. Gryner writes compelling melodies that are heartfelt and honest, but aren't overly self-indulgent or confessional. There's nothing overtly annoying about her subject matter. She's got a powerful, expressive voice that's also more than worthy of the above comparisons. What's perhaps most impressive though, is the full control Gryner exerts over the finished product. (Something that puts her more in the same league as the Artist Formerly Known As Prince.) This is a self-produced effort, recorded on an eight track in various locales including northern California, London and the shores of Lake Huron. She's also an accomplished pianist and guitarist. On the undeniably catchy Stereochrome she enlists a friend to play some haunting cello. It's an impressive musical effort that may one day put Forest -- about 30 kilometres east of Sarnia, just south of Lake Huron -- on the musical map. (Mike Blanchfield) okay, so it was really much of a review of SF, but it was about Emm! [1] uh....debut??? you would think they'd know more...
