Hell No! The feel and rhythms of ska are more upbeat. I wouldn't call Brian Setzer Orchestra ska, nor would I call it swing. I wouldn't call the Dance Hall Crashers ska, nor would I call it swing either. See the difference? No? Well the difference is, ska makes you wanna boogy your ass off. Local ska bands, are the best ska bands known to man. You can't cut a ska band if you're planning to go mainstream. Sticking to what you feel and how you feel about something makes the music, music. The Slackers, are one of the best bands I can name, who fall in the real category of ska. Them, or the Specials. A lesson to all you rookies out there who think they're becoming a fan of ska, don't buy mainstream! Not until you buy a compilation of ska that's in your local town. You'll feel a whole different vibe after that. _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: Go Postal! Go Postal? What's that? It's not what's that, it's who are THEY? Go Postal is a band from West Covina, Ca. They give in the rhythm and beats of ska and punk. The band started out a bunch of high schoolers, who still are high schoolers, who just wanted to be in a band. Go Postal consist of a shitload of members. The lead singer is a young woman by the name of Karen Fillipe. She has been compared to the likes of the main singer from Skankin' Pickle. Go Postal, won't take crap from anyone. They've been through so many rough edges, it's not even funny. This band, is a sure looker for everyone who likes music, period. _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: UNKLE Unkle, consists of James Levalle and Dj Shadow. If you've ever watched something on Mtv, like an episode from the Real World, or what not, and you heard a nice beat in the background, and went, "Nice one! who's that?", you probably heard UNKLE. UNKLE to many, was said the be one of the best albums of '98. Many guest appearances were on the album, Psyence Fiction. For example, Richard Ashcroft from The Verve, wrote and song on a track called, Lonely Soul. Thom Yorke did an appearance for Rabbit in Your Headlights. My personal favorites included songs from Atlantique called chaos, and a song from Alice Temple called Bloodstain. The whole fuckin' album is wicked. If you love music at all, you have got to get this one. Besides, who doesn't love Dj Shadow? www.UNKLE.com _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: Esthero Ever wonder, what a woman and one man combined together can do? Well, it's Esthero. Either that or just the woman herself, considering Doc had left to pursue other things. I begin to think that there's a conspiracy going on in Canada. Damn Canadians always do it right. I bet anyone, that at least ONE of everyone's favorite artists are either Canadian, or they've at least been there. Esthero, Emm Gryner, Joydrop, all of them boogers are from Toronto. Esthero tends to be more on the trip-hop, jungle side though. No one can go wrong with jungle beats. Esthero has done acts with the likes of the Pharcyde, and the Roots. Her voice is like God herself. She can't or shouldn't be compared to anyone. It's against the rules to compare Esthero with anyone, even if it were the bestest diva you can name. Esthero's originality is so pure, that you'd be compared to her, not vice versa. Since she has recently gone independent again, things seem to be getting better for her. One of her next acts will be at Coachella, California's next festival worth being a festival. On the same day and place, great artists such as Rage Against the Machine, Cibo Matto, etc. will be playing. That's one music and arts festival not to be missed. Esthero is one artist not to be missed either. estheronline: http://listen.to/esthero _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: "Happy Birthday To Me" by: Shannon Grrrl On August 28, (my birthday, so mark yr calendears,) I had the pleasure of going to see the Muffs play at Tramps in New York City. Buck and The Pristeens played earlier that evening, and certainly got the crowd warmed up for the kick ass show to follow. I would describe the Muffs as a punk band with an amazingly talented and beautiful lead vocalist, Kim Shattuck. Despite the bands rough sound and hostile song lyrics, Kim made everyone feel right at home, when she asked for more lighting on the audience, eXplaining that she "feeds off of the energy of the crowd." They played a long set even though it was hot and stuffy, and as Kim announced her "underwear was riding up her ass." She then asked for a show of hands from other people eXperiencing this same discomfort in the audience. And although quite a lot of hands went up, the show went on. I brought my best friend along, and at the end of the show she said, "Wow. I can see why you like them so much." The Muffs may remind you of yummy bands like the Fastbacks, L7, Hole, and Seven Year Bitch, but watch out cause' theyre punker, meaner and louder. I strongly suggest that you see the Muffs live, but if yr really lazy you can just pick up one of their albums ("Muffs", "Blonder and Blonder", "Happy Birthday To Me", "Alert Today Alive Tomorrow", "Hamburger") and listen to in the comfort of yr own home. You can also find the Muffs on the "Short Music For Short People" punk comp, and the "She's A Rebel" Women In Rock comp., which has other awesome grrrl bands such as Cakelike, Tribe 8, Nitrocris, and 7 year bitch, (by the way proceeds from this album go to "Rock For A Cure" to fight against breast cancer." So pick up one for you and one for all yr friends. _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: Tricky Tricky's new album, alot of people have been saying it's a dissapointment, I don't really care what they've been saying, because Tricky is Tricky, and gosh damn! is Tricky kick ass. Not many people like him have writtien with Bjork, and Bjork, and did I say Bjork?! He's written with the more top notch people in the business, but to work with Bjork, about sums everything up. Tricky is one smart fucker that needless to say, no matter what he comes out with, it always is good. Feeling the vibes with Tricky is not too easy, but all in all, someone or everyone knows where he's coming from sometime or another. Just because he is trying new things, doesn't mean he's "changed" or he's a sell out. For sure, Tricky is still bomb. _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: Kottonmouth Kings By: Ann Tu " Bump..bump..bump…that's the sounds of the fifties while they hittin' in my trunk, bump…bump…bump.. we're the KoTTonMouThKings and we don't give a fuck," " Oh Lord it's the dogs life, dogs life…., " if you listen to KroQ then you've heard these lyrics from the original P-Town Ballers before. The KoTTonMouThKingS started by Trip Daddy X AKA Brad X, former member of The Humble Gods and executive producer of Suburban Noize Records (branched from Capitol Records) , also includes youngest rapper (22) D- Loc, main rapper Saint Vicious AKA Saint Dog, DJ Bobby B and Pakelika. The KMK's are well known for ripping their shit on stage while rapping about "Rolling down Yorba Linda BLVD," or " I'mma gettin' so high… I'mma make that ass fly." Their 'Royal Highness' CD has 17 tracks including 2 hidden ones. One of the hidden tracks, ' Pimp Twist,' flows from things like " I see YOUR freak, I look in her direction, 5 minutes later she'll be lickin' MY erection!" to " Like I once knew this girl named Vanessa, I undressed her last December or November, was it September… I'm a Stoner Reakin' Havock I don't remember shit." Every song on the CD kicks ass, from ' Bong Tokin' Alcoholics' to ' Planet Budtron.' Track number 7, ' Spies ' features the late Humble Gods. Track number 9 ' Dog's Life ' from the David Spade comedy " Lost and Found, " features Too Rude and Dog Boy as well as track number 16 ' Discombulated.' The Kottonmouth Kindgs have been working their asses off on tour trying to promote the " Royal Highness" CD because most of the songs are not radio friendly, there's always a fuck here and a fucken there. They've also put out a 12 track CD "Hidden Stash" that you can buy either at shows or online at merch.com. DJ Bobby B has his own "99 Rips Beyond" CD full of 22 mixes and features Saint Dog, D-Loc and Daddy X on some of the tracks. Their last show in California was in LA Saturday, August 14 at the Roxy Theatre down in Hollywood and like every show they let all the bitches go up and shake their asses while they flow to 'Pimp Twist' Kottonmouth will be back in California by mid- September and the shows kick fucking ass, I'm serious… these white boys can rip that shit, just like the Beastie Boys. _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: Independent artists turned mainstream Dude, don't you ever wonder why independent artists turn mainstream? I mean look at the Offspring, even freakin Eminem, Esthero (my fav. thank God she's indie again), and the Roots. What's the deal with that?! It sucks!, when the artist you most can relate to ends up being on mainstream radio. But, coming to think about it, you begin think, it must be their job. Bubble gum rock sucks too, but entertaining is their job. If they weren't so mainstream, someone else would be, and who else would we have to bag on? I've been noticing that urban, underground, and all indie stuff has been becoming the "fad". Everyone, even bastard typical boogers, or whatever are shopping at Urban Outfitters, and it pisses me off. Those people are taking over what makes people like us, us. Hopefully, that will burn out too. There wouldn't be any place for us to call home if everything we worked hard for ends up being everyone's dinner, and leaves us with the left overs. I wanna call all those posers my dessert. The main point of this article, is to tell everyone that we can do something about it. We can get back our homes! All we need to do, is get together and regulate. I know that people say, trying to hard to be someone you're not is even becoming a strikingly typical thing. I say, "Bullcorn to that!" My style is my own style and someone who tries to take that away from me, better back off! All that I have left to say about this situation, is I'm waiting for it to fade like Vanilla Ice. We all have the power to get rid of what we don't want. _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: The groove on independent films High Art, Trainspotting, Blair Witch, Clerks. Those are the names to movies' cousins. Independent films are so good, that lately everyone has to have a piece of them. Independent films have to be the only exception to mainstream level. Lately, indie films are the flicks that people have been dying to see. Run Lola Run, is a German movie that has been hittin' up box office hits everywhere. If there is a theater next to your home, that lists indie films, make sure you visit them as soon as possible. Just because you feel that, Blair Witch has betrayed all to the indies, doesn't mean you should stop watching the whole shebang. Because, you have to admit Blair Witch was one damn good movie. _____________________________________________________________________ Subject: Independent artists being independent artists Emm Gryner. She's one of the main reasons I put out this zine. Tricia Concepcion. She IS the reason I put out this zine. So what exactly is the deal with independent artists? Geez, so many questions asked so frequently. The reason is because they're not a bunch of bullsh*tters. Emm Gryner is my favorite of all time artist. She is one hard worker, and her music is real. Her third release, which is considering that third time is the charm, Science Fair, is tearing it up. Every time someone mentions Emm anywhere, they can't help but say something like, "She so freakin' rocks!" People don't say such things just to say it, or they'd be wasting precious breathe ya know? For all independent artists, you can't help but feel for them, because they're always working their asses off. When you're touring and touring at people's homes for free, there aren't many words to describe you. That's what Emm Gryner is, indescribable. I mean, there aren't many female artists doing cool covers of the Beastie Boys and Ozzie Osbourne. Emm even got to play at Lilith Fair for all 3 years. So what about Tricia? Shiet, Tricia IS Cat's CradLe, and her independence says it all. You can't be an independent artist, without striving and working your booty off. Her debut album was mentioned on the Premiere Issue of Cat's CradLe, but some of her talent wasn't. Tricia plays the drums, guitar, sometimes bass, and piano! What the hail man! Talk about working the buttocks. Emm and Tricia make me wanna cry! I also have been starting Ice Nine Records because of independent artists like those two. Again, I will say, add those to your shopping cart right now! They've influenced people like me, they'll surely influence you. And a bit of a run-on sentence, too. How about this ... it doesn't flow as nicely as I'd like, but its meaning is a lot clearer: Like Sarah Slean, a Toronto piano-playing compatriot, Gryner combines classical elements with personal lyrics.
