Greetings from Boston..... This is my third day here and so far it's been pretty good...made some interesting friends...worn myself out, there's a lot of walking in this town! On a bright note, I was talking to some of my orientation leaders (I was lucky, my group got the cool ones) and I was talking about how I would love to be able to invite people down to play (Jess, chelle, trish, emm even...) and they are all for it..so yay! Ok, sorry for going off on a tangent...the real reason Im writing this is to find out all the cool info on Emm's show at the fez? I'm going down with Aly and hopefully Nita. I remember Mark posted some big long thing about it, but of course that was on my *old* computer, so all is lost....if anybody could even give me the phone number and whatnot, I'd be forever grateful..... I hope a lot of you can make it! Running amuck in the city! What could be better? Thanks a lot:-) Shannon ps - glad to hear you all had fun at trish's party.... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 09:58:07 -0400 From: Joni Daniels Subject: Fwd: Emm at Fez in NYC in Sept.... I woke up Sunday morning at 4:30am with intentions only of going to work and coming home. but i was able to get out of work early (at 1:00pm) and went and picked up my wonderful friend Stephanie and we decided to do a spur of the moment road trip to go see the equally wonderful Emm Gryner in Toledo, Ohio. And what an experience it was. I'd never done anything like this, so I had to say it was kind of weird going to a complete stranger's house to see my favorite singer/songwriter play in their backyard. But Laura and her parents were wonderful hosts. They had plenty of food and were very welcoming to all of the strangers in their home. i'm sure it had to be a weird experience for them too. Emm went on a little after 4pm. for her first song she played the guitar on "Your Sort of Human Being" (she asked Brandi, the family dog if he wanted to do a little solo). i knew after that first song this was going to be an amazing experience. everyone on these mailing lists has always talked about how amazing Emm is live, but living in Ohio, i had never seen her myself. she did not disappoint. she joked around in between songs too and was really very funny, i thought. for the next 5 songs she sat down at the piano, playing a mixture of old and new before going back to the guitar and closing out with an amazing version of Summerlong. the set list was: YOUR SORT OF HUMAN BEING 89 DAYS OF ALCATRAZ (a request of Laura's as being one of her faves (mine too Laura!!!) DISCO LIGHTS YOU DO SOMETHING TO ME ACID REVENGE (one of my faves from the new album) SUMMERLONG Afterward, Emm stayed around and talked to everyone, and i finally got to meet her. she is even more astounding in person. she was absolutely beautiful (even though she claimed she was having a bad hair day), but in spite of it, she still let me take my picture with her and signed my copy of Science Fair. she is so amazingly down to earth and genuine. i thought about the whole Living Room Show concept and how much it must have meant to all the people whose houses she visited. how many artists, i wonder, would have done something like this for their most hardcore true fans? Emm joked in between shows about how much trust it took for people to invite her into their homes. "I could have showed up with a bunch of knives", she joked. well, by the same token, its got to take an incredible amount of faith on her part. you just don't know what kind of crazy people are out there these days, and to have enough faith in the goodness of people to go into their houses and put on a great show for them, that's just amazing. and then to be so human and so down to earth. she actually took time to talk to me, asking me where i drove from and what i did for a living. she apologized to me for buying Laura's gift at Meijers saying if she could have found a Target, she would have bought it there. and then she ACTUALLY thanked us MORE THAN ONCE for coming up to see her. now that was amazing to me. because she was so sweet and down to earth, i have even more respect for her now than before. as Trish Concepcion said to me online last night, when you meet your favorite artist in person and they turn out to be a real person, it makes you end up liking their music even more. and now i can honestly say do, and i am a big fan for life. well, this "recap" is getting even longer than one of Kristy's (lol), if you can imagine that, so i'm going to end it here. thanks again to Laura and her family, and Emm of course, for making this one of the best days of my life (even though the total experience (not counting drive time) ended up being only an hour and a half). and also, thank you to Michael Murphy, who we also met and i must say is a VERY cool person. Emm is lucky to have him as a manager. if you guys ever decide to do this Living Room tour again, keep Akron, Ohio in mind, okay??? see ya all! Any Seattle people going to go catch Emm in vancouver? It is a Thursday night October 28th, and then Friday in Victoria.... LOL I was originally planning to go to Vancouver between October 8th to October 17th, but I think I may change my plans so that I end up in vancouver from October 22nd to October 31st. I just double checked my vaction time and apparently I still have 8 days of vacation time left for the year
