Someone (take a bow Corey Dufort if you're here) recommended her on the Paula Cole list. I eventually found some Real Audio clips, ordered "Public" and here I am! Emm's style might go down pretty well here in the UK if ever someone attempted to market her over here, but I cynically feel that what is successful these days is determined more by record company and media hype rather than whether it's any good or not, so talented people like Emm wouldn't stand a chance unless they were in with the in-crowd. Still, I'm doing what I can to spread the word - tapes for friends, honourable mention on other mailing lists etc. Cheers Chris W ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 08:30:59 -0400 From: Steve I Subject: oops... It is the work of Emm-bassadors like you (and all you other ppl on these lists!) that will make Emm a big star. You guys rock. BTW: We're working on setting up some showcases for Emm in the UK! We'll post info here when it happens. Since Chris mentioned making tapes for friends, I thought this might be a good time to air my opinion on bootlegs. It's really great to spread the word and share rare live moments with lots of other people, but I think it's cool to include a note with every bootleg that says something like this: The artist makes no royalties from this copied material, so please try to think of other ways to show your support. For example: Buy the next album (or the last one). Pester your local radio station to play the single. Tell all your friends about your new discovery. Check every record store you go into to see if they have the album - if they don't ask them why not. Write a review for your local paper. Get on the college radio station and play a cut! Request the video on MuchMusic or MTV. Over and over again. Be creative - think of other ways to spread the Emm word! What do you think? I was there with two other friends, Mike and Barb. I wasn't riding at the time. I was driving a green Cavalier at the time. Actually so was Mike. Since then I got a Harley! My strongest memory of the Circus night (other than Emm's great performance) was seeing Emm visiting all her friends in the room and then sitting down at a table next to me all by herself, I guess for a short break before her performance. I asked Emm if she wanted some company and she said no thanks. I think she was probably getting herself psyched-up. (aka: lots of emm stuff) hey guys, WOW. lots o' messages this week! loving that!! just wanted to say hello and respond to a couple of things! NEW YORK - EVERYONE should come out for the Holly / Emm showcase! That would rock. We should get a hotel room in the city and hang out and stuff after the show. The Fez is a cool club, and New York is amazing. :) I'll be your own personal tour guide if you want. I get off of work at 5 pm and work on 47th and 5th ave, so if people want to meet for dinner, etc., maybe we can work something out? :) Yay! Holly Palmer is quite good, I have her (older) CD and like it alright, and am looking forward to hearing her new material... Should be a cool show, though. WATCHES - Is the FX store in Toronto NOT the coolest store you've ever been in? I love it!! I could've spent hours there (and tons of $, but luckily I refrained and only bought the $5.99 watch ;) ). People at work were making fun of my Crazy Planet watch, though ;p I guess it doesn't go so well with a business suit... ah well. DETROIT - Looking forward to seeing everyone for Trish's bday party, should be very fun!! C'EST WHAT - Emm was incredible at C'est What and I know a lot of people were really blown away by her performance... She gets better (and funnier! :) ) every time I see/hear another performance... Also, I have to reiterate the James/Steve/Gian battlecry--Emm IS the coolest person around :) She is so wicked nice and talented... Yay Emm!! SARAH SLEAN - I recommend her new CD Blue Parade to all of you--beyond recommend. This album is stunning... I am blown away by it... If you haven't checked Sarah out yet, please do! There's 2 clips up from the CD on her website, but my own personal faves aren't up there... there isn't a flaw on this CD... It is brillance (just like SF) :) www.sarahslean.com :) Oh yeah, uhhh... Julian and I are going to do the contest still, I swear ;) I've been sort of occupied w/ things and haven't thought of a question to ask... hmm... any suggestions?
