Wish I could have been there with you all at Sunday's show to see "The Artist Previously Known as Mary"! Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 21:34:18 -0400 From: Student Subject: my trip to Toronto! Hi folks, I had an awesome time in Toronto last weekend, and I still haven't had time to write everything down, but there were tons of cool moments, like listening to Jessica playing guitar and singing in the back seat while we drove up from New York, and seeing Trish playing the drums on Ticket 152 at the C'est What show, and Emm coming out to kick ass at the same show Friday. And Rannie's little sister Michelle was kind of amazing too! (Hard to believe that was her first show. :) It was great to meet people I've only known through the 'net til now, like Rannie ('hugs' is right!) and Roberto (thanks for the place to sleep!) and Julian (who I'll have to continue that debate with...) and Steve (mp3 yeah :) and Gian (the originator) and James McGarry (where's the set list? ;) and Paul (sans skates). Oh yeah, did I say I ~finally~ met Emm in person?! :] :D She was saying hi to my buddy Mark and he pointed me out to her. She said some nice things and we had a very umm nice handshake (someone must've read a long ago post of mine, or else I'm just delusional. ;) On Saturday a bunch of us got to see Trish, Jess, Michelle and Rayanne sing at Roberto's house, which was also cool! I got to see Trish demonstrate her hackysack skills there (omigod the others were so bad... hehe... well at least Michelle and Rannie were getting some triples. ;) On Sunday some of us met for a pancake breakfast, and it was nice to talk to Steve some more (plus hanging out in Trish and Jess's hotel room... ;) and what was that about a DAT from the C'est What show, Farr??? :) Then it was time to say bye to the songwriting girls, and go line up for Lilith. We had to stand in line for two frickin' hours!! I got a Lawn ticket from a scalper ($$!) because the show was sold out by Saturday. Finally we got in and headed for the second stage, which was a tiny one perched on the side of the grassy area, but viewable by the whole audience. Mark said hi to Kevin Fox, who was tuning up backstage, and I asked him if Joni was there... a few minutes later Joni and Emm came up. (No dog named Orbit though... I didn't see Sheryl Crow's dog either... I saw Prince though. ;) Next we were out in front of the stage for Emm's performance (at 450pm) and I got to meet Emm's parents and her brother Tony! It was cool to talk with Tony about the Noise'R'Us days (he said Emm liked Iron Maiden a lot back then ;) and stuff. Emm's mom said she goes to my webpage! Isn't that groovy? :) I also got to meet that Kristy Radford girl I've been hearing so much of (in the background on Emm show tapes? ;) Joni gave her a video camera to shoot Emm's performance with, which hampered her in in the screaming contest thingie... umm, was it a 4-way tie Mark?? (Michelle and Emily and Andy were the other loudest Emm fans. :) Emm did 4 songs: Phonecall 45, Revenge, Summerlong, and Boy Races. (Then she got cut off! Oh well, the 4 songs were awesome! Emm played keyboards, with Kevin Fox on guitar, Stephen McGrath on drums and Phil B (I think!) on bass. (I just imagined the harpsichord on Revenge. :) Emm got a great response from the crowd, and headed down to the HMV booth to sign autographs for an hour or so. That's where I met Micheal Murphy (who knew who I was... we discussed what the single should be ;) and chatted with Joni and various other folks. (Aww, it was so cute to see Emily Best (with the little smiley face emily :) getting her CD signed by Emm and then showing people what Emm wrote. :) There was also some stuff about Ben Affleck images getting pasted in various spots, somehow. And Emm was posing for pictures with people. :) Okay, so I missed Bif Naked's set, hmmm... was there something else to stick around for? (besides Sarah of course) We had heard that Emm would be out for the finale, so we wandered around while the Dixie Chicks did their thing. (They got a big reaction from the crowd, as did Sheryl Crow.) Only celeb sighting: snowboarder Ross Rebagliati. It was nice to see his purpleness Prince come out during Every Day Is A Winding Road to do a great guitar solo (The Artist! Sheryl called him). Then Sarah came on and was great, and it was neat when she talked to the Fumblers. (We watched those Sarah list people, including Rannie, Michelle, Andy, Roberto, Paul... all posing for a group photo after. Cool community spirit.) Now I've got next Saturday in Detroit to look forward to... :] still travelling, Bob p.s. happy birthday August 25 girl!!! :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 22:14:11 -0400 (EDT) From: "Julian C. I haven't had much time to write all about the weekend, but like I've been describing this whole experience all week, it's been surreal, yet incredible. Being a 'local', it still amazes me that so many of you came from all over the place for only a weekend. Next time, take the whole damn month off! We'll rent out a huuuuge Fumbler house and just party...it's possible...we really don't need Lilith as an excuse. The week... Wednesday - Rannie's birthday party. Very cool. I've never been to a gay bar, it's nice and all, but really...what do you do when you spend the whole night staring at hot guys, you know you'll never have?! The answer...drink! Thursday - Wonderland. It's really hard to have fun where you spend painful hours working for minimum wage, but I did with Fumblers. Too bad the American boat got soaked, a pity really. Friday - C'est what? It was perhaps the strangest of days. All those Fumblers in such a small area...weird. I think I spent the entire night dazed and confused. But, as everyone's been saying, all you performers were amazing, (celle you rock, too bad you live in Scarborough or we could be friends). Thank you James! Saturday - Thank you Roberto for lending your house for the cool Living Room show. K's Choice totally blew me away and Sheryl Crow?! She wasn't THAT good at Woodstock, but Saturday night she was wicked! I don't even have to describe the whole Sarah's amazing thing here...but "Love's Recovery" with the IGs?! Wow. Sunday - Pre Lilith hell. I had an 'accident' in the parking lot. My car's got a little boo boo, green Ohio car got a banged up bumper. All limbs are still intact. Note to self: always look before opening your car door. When we finally made it to the Ampitheatre, we just had enough time to check out some booths and then go over to see Emm. Just to clear things up, I was not in the Emm-You-Rock contest, I just suggested a shouting showdown. Next time...when I have a voice (re: FumbleFlu) I will 'run the race and blow you all away'...but Emm was great as always. I love the live version of "Revenge". Ben Affleck...mmm. Other quick random memories: Nettwerk Adam touched my $5 Sarah poster. ... "hey he looks like Prince...it is Prince...isn't it?" how much did that rock?! And of course..."You must be the Fumblers!" Unforgettable. I gotta say, with the glowsticks and Sweet Surrender we've got a strange cult like salute to Sarah thing. It's the coolest thing. Must be scary for the non-Fumbler. Heh! Intimidation is the key. I'm sorry if I was boring or something at Marche but it was depressing. I just wish I could have spent more time and gotten to know all of you better. You are all great people, a weekend is not enough! So Matt had a good question late Sunday night...What's our excuse to spend a riduclous amount of money to do this all again? Is anyone gonna go to see Emm open for Holly Palmer on September 24th? Here's some info about Fez....it's located inside a restaurant -- the Time Cafe, which is located at 380 Lafayette St (Great Jones St. at Lafayette St.)... to get in and get a seat, reservations are highly recommended and can be made by calling (212) 533-7000.... reservations guarantee entrance (but not a seat) for 30 minutes after the doors open...seats are first-come first-served... tickets are payable in cash only and all shows are all-ages...there's a 2 drink minimum, but you must be 21 or older to drink... Fez is open from 6 pm til 4 am on Friday ... check out http://www.feznyc.com for further info or these other 2 webpages: http://newyork.citysearch.com/E/V/NYCNY/0010/78/56/ .... http://newyork.sidewalk.com/detail/2471 you can e-mail Fez at: Feznyc@aol.com As you can see, I'm quite bored right now watching Mtv with Bob... Finally, here's a write-up about the place from some webpage: - ------------------------------------------------------ To get to Fez, you must pass through a beaded curtain in the rear of Time Cafe's dining room. On the other side, you'll find a Moroccan-flavored bar filled with comfy couches and Persian rugs — a most unexpected oasis, and a perfect place for a relaxing after-work martini (it doesn't get crowed here until about 7 pm). Descend a staircase to the gold lamé stage area and you land in one of the cushier pop-music venues around, one that attracts an unusually stylish, well-groomed crowd. Fez has taken to booking emerging artists in multi-week "residencies" — a great way to watch a nascent career take off. The club is also home to the Mingus Big Band that plays the knotty music of its namesake, the late Charles Mingus, every Thursday. Avoid the crammed rows of picnic tables and grab one of the few spacious booths where it's easier to grab a bite to eat (for some shows you can call ahead and reserve one, but you have to show up pretty early to claim it, which can mean sitting through some forgettable opening acts). If you don't get to the club in time to find a seat, it's almost not worth going at all, since there's nowhere to stand except near the bar. - -------------------------------------------- Markeee _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Hmm... That might be hard for us non-Toronto folk, but maybe if we made a collage of pictures with each of us posing with our watch and if possible, Emm!? Maybe they'll give her an endorsement and help pay for her next album!
