And to top it all off, he's *gasp* nice!!!! How is that possible to be cute AND nice AND a good drummer!? If you haven't checked it out and if you're a Steve fan(I happen to think he is a superb drummer), check it out now! "The Dish" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 21:09:20 -0400 From: Steve I Subject: sf etc. Heya folks! Ironically, I had to wait a few extra days to get my own copy of Science Fair, mine arrived yesterday (Monday). Gotta love Canada Post... they're slower to send something a few blocks away than into war-torn Detroit (to our battle-hardened friend Trish! :-) ) Anyway nice to finally be able to TALK about the CD with people... isn't Stereochrome incredible? I still think that one could take the pop charts by storm given a decent chance. Julia too, for that matter. And Boy Races... not as poppy but so moving... definitely one of my favourites on the CD. Also a big fan of Serenade and Southern Dreamer, and I love her Paul Weller cover. All in all, this is definitely my favourite of Emm's albums, and also one of my favourite new CDs this year. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 23:33:10 PDT From: "chelle shock" Subject: Boy Races Hey all! Ok... ok... so I use to hate this song. Yes... that's right... HATED IT!!! I felt that it started off too slow, that it didn't hold enough instrumentation... I dunno, for me, it was just lacking as an Emm song and I would usually just skip it to listen to "You Do Something To Me" (which BTW rocks!) ***HOWEVER***, after a very insightful morning drive to work with my bro, I've come to realize that this song... KICKS ASS!!! How could I have ever doubted an Emm song?!!? The subtle guitar chords, the bassline that seems to blend seamlessly into the almost hypnotic percussion, all of it in combination with a beautiful dose of Emm's overlapping self-harmonies bring this totally *AWESOME* song to unforeseen heights! And who could possibly ignore the "climaxing" intensity near the end of the song when Emm's flawless voice echoes, "So come closer, 'cause I need to feel you." I mean... WOW!!! talk about leaving me speechless, eh? *sigh* Ok, well that's pretty much all I had to say bout that! A few words of advice to all those people who might feel the way I *use* to about this song : LISTEN TO IT AGAIN!!! trust me... you'll absolutely fall in love with it! And to those of you who *already* love this song, I'm sorry it took me so long to figure out! Oh and Rannie... thanx 4 da enlightenment! lol bya all! ~chelle 8Þ (23 days & counting!!! AAAHHH!!!) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 16:22:53 -0400 From: Steve I Subject: toronto shows Not sure when Joni gets back, so maybe I should say a couple of things about Emm's schedule: She'll be opening for Loudon Wainwright III at Ted's Wrecking Yard in Toronto on August 6. Loudon of course is father to Rufus, whom Emm has opened for before. The CN Tower show is $10, but includes admission to the Tower. All you folks from out of town to see Sarah Slean's CD release should definitely take advantage of this, it's a great deal to get to see Emm and Toronto from way up high for 10 bucks! :-) Lindsay from Pittsburgh wrote (in Wisdom Bus) >email me for directions if you're interested in coming. your actual email address didn't make it into the digest: >From: LNHjs20 Is that an aol address? Should that read LNHjs20@aol.com? >by the way, any recommendations on how to tape a show in a small room of your >house with a tiny hand held recorder? never tried it before, but set it up close to Emm, preferably with nothing between the mic and Emm and away from external noise. Use a 100 min tape and you probably won't need to flip the tape (which might be distracting). Steve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 20:19:22 PDT From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Kosovo benefit wrapup... Hey, folks... So,it's been almost 2 weeks (2 weeks!) since our Kosovo benefit at C'est What, and while I've mentioned it briefly on the lists, I wanted to just finally get the chance to comment on what others wrote and again thank everyone for coming out and making it such a huge success. :) James wrote: >I just want to say thanks to everyone who came out to the Benefit >gig last >night. It completely exceeded any expectations we had! And That really is an understatement. For those of you who were there, you'll recall that I did mention at the end of the show that we really didn't know what to expect and were overwhelmed by the turnout, the vibe, the support. :) Actually, it's kind of funny - the line of the night turned out to be, "Ohmigod, there are people WE DON'T KNOW here!" ;-) :-) James and I kept repeating this to each other giddily all evening. ;-) >we could not have done it without you. Over $800 was raised for the >Red >Cross Balkan Relief fund. Thanks to the performers: Sarah, >Linda, Trish, >John and Jen and to our speakers Yazemine and Trung. >Thanks to everyone who helped with the organization and publicity! >Especially my fellow behind the scenes pal SteveIto and to Joni who >was >often on the other end of the phone from Emm working her magic! I'd like to extend my thanks to all of the above as well - all the performers were amazing, and to our behind-the-scenes crew, Steve, James, Joni, Emm - what can be done through the sheer love of music is incredible, huh? :) >Tab did a fabo job with EmmCeeing :-) Look for her on the weekend news on >CITY-TV. Thanks! Maybe a broadcast career or do you love the >ink stains? >;-) They're (ink stains, that is ;)) rather hard to scrub off - perhaps I should reconsider, huh? But thanks very much for the kudos - I felt totally at home up there, mostly thanks to the warm "we're all friends here" vibe of the crowd. Plus, as a former drama student, I suppose I've missed the stage these past few years! ;-) Did anyone else catch the CityTV clip? We were rather amazed that they showed up at all, let alone *air* a segment on the next day's news! It's hilarious, I've actually turned into a mini-celebrity at work - I walked into the building on the Monday following, and people I've never met in my life stopped me to ask, "Hey, didn't I see you on TV?" Geez, no wonder they say you live or die by the 30-second soundbite! ;-) But if anyone here *did* catch it, I must firmly state that the camera angle for my tiny interview bit was wrong, wrong, wrong - I consquently looked *hideous* in the clip, I swear I don't look that bad in 'real life'! ;-) :-) >Thanks to Yaz, Tab's sister in case you didn't know, for doing the >door! Yay, Yaz! ;-) Way to wield authority at the door! Good thing none of you got rowdy, or she'd've kicked you out like *that*! ;-P >And a very special thanks to Emm, you "picked up the phone and made >it >happen!" Without you I'm not sure it would've been this rousing a >success! > Thanks a thousand times over for using your connections >for performing >for landing your name to the marquee for just being >you. You keep making >me recall that you _are_ the coolest person I >know. I can't add anything to what James has written, but I would second that zealously - Emm *is* the coolest person we know, for her drive, for her talent, and for being such a gosh-darn NICE person, dammit! :-) >And thanks to the TO Star and Now for pre-coverage and CITY >forpost->coverage! All the little press mentions of our show surprised and delighted us because of the simple fact that it was our own tiny grassroots creation - all the coverage/attention/overflow crowd was just gravy. Julian wrote: >I was very impressed by John Copping's songwriting (I've never heard >him >before). The man is very amusing while performing though -- he >reminds me >of Kramer :) LOL, Kramer, I never thought of that! But very apt. ;-) I liked his, "Okay, now I'm gonna go so that the chicks can play." ;-) >Also, Jen Lord's guitar playing blew me away; think Ani meets Amy >Ray. That's exactly how I've been describing her to everyone, too! I had seen her once before, years ago, I believe, so I couldn't recall her sound at all. But very intense guitar playing, quite impressive indeed. >It's great to know that we have such wonderful talent here in >Toronto. This show could not have happened if it weren't for that one basic fact. Face it, Toronto - we have a Scene. And it's vital. It BLEEDS talent. Even though we had some difficulty getting together a bill for the benefit, we were never in doubt that we *could*, simply because we knew that whatever and whoever we came up with would be great. Emm is Great. Her friends are Great. *Their* friends are Great. And so on and so on. Steve said, more than once in the planning stages, "Don't worry, this is *Toronto*. Anyone we get will be amazing." And he was, of course, right. :-) Steve wrote: >Tab, if journalism doesn't work out, you could always MC the oscars >and >stuff like that.  :-)  LOL! Uh, no thanks. I think I'll stick with the smaller stuff. ;-) >And Tab also gets credit for coming up with the idea >for the show in the first place.  Excellent idea Tab, James and I >were >just happy to be along for the ride. Aw, thanks! A lot of people have written and called and such to thank *me* for the show, but like I've said, it could *not* have happened without our incredible core team - hey, guys - wanna do it again tomorrow? ;-) :-) >Hear hear again!  An organizer's worst fear is that no one will show >up; >no one wants to be the only one at their own party.  To see all >the >smiling, familiar faces pour in, and *keep* pouring in, warmed >my heart to >the core. You guys rock, every last one of you. Precisely. :-) I don't know if we could have put it into words, but I could just SEE how excited and pleased and *happy* Steve, James, Emm, and I were that night. It was really special, folks, largely thanks to those of you who came out. Thanks! >I'm glad there were no hitches from the audience perspective, >because >there *were* some hitches, but it seems we were able to hide >them well!  >:-) LOL, totally! If you guys only knew how frazzled we were running around here and there, figuring and re-figuring the schedule... It was a bit of a comedy of errors, but like all good ones turned out more than fine in the end. Finally, Trish wrote: >Here are some thank you's(like I won an oscar or something...) Hey, there's those Oscars again! Maybe I *should* look into that hosting thing... ;-) >Tab - nice to meet you finally, thanks for being so nice to me Great to finally meet you, too, Trish! :) I did see you perform back at the Free Times, but never got a chance to say hello. Great tunes, love to hear more in the future. :) So, to wrap up, thanks again, everyone! It was definitely a night to remember, even 12 days after the fact... ;-) Much love, Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 23:10:33 From: kate connnors Subject: *yowza* HI all you wisdom busers and headliners!!! ~so i got science fair yesterday and like you guys i am completely addicted to it. i must've heard it a hundred time already -i'm trying not to overplay it, but... i was listening to it outside today, in the sunshine, and with headphones, which makes it sound a little different. plus the cicadas were backing her up. even from the 1st song you can tell it's an amazing cd. and her voice just cradles the words... every song is worlds better than anything a lot of bands do. i feel lucky to even know of her - -but otherwise not because I'm gonna be in toronto this weekend when she's here so i'm gonna miss her for the.. the 4th time in about a year. but that's okay cuz i have the cd. *sigh* and another cool thing is that after listening to the new cd, the older stuff sounds kinda new, different. it's hard to say but i think that right now some of my favourites -the ones i can't stop playing- are probably stereochrome, revenge and boy races. and i'm not sure but i'm pretty sure that she's got way too much talent for only one person. ok thanks for reading this. *molly* PS. very cool lists. ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V2 #166 ***********************************
