So, what does everyone think? Just Overall, ten times better than _Public_, marvelous songs and that fine-honed Emm Gryner production-craftsmanship. Emm has a really good sense of what she's trying to say and how she wants to say it. In other artists this sort of singular vision might come off as egotism, but Emm is at least as good a producer as a song-writer. I love the tonal quality on "Stardeep" its got this heavy dark chocolate-cake richness. And the percussion in "Good Riddance", I thought _Steve_! before I even had a chance to read the credits. Emm did a great job of capturing Steve McGrath's thorough percussion style. It gives a very round, well-balanced sound. I think it would be hard to get a style like Steve's on record, it just seems too .. too... not perfect,... but right, it just seems too right to get captured in recording, but wow, a fine job there. I love the way Steve uses every single piece of his kit and nearly every square inch of each piece. Its like his brain is always trying to figure out what he can hit next to make the song better.* I was also very happy with Julia, its been my favourite Emm song for some time now and its just so cool that it was on the album :-) > wondering... Maybe I'm posting this a little too early yet. My personal favs > are some of the ones I've already heard her play live(maybe that's why > they're my favs) - Stereochrome, Revenge, Boy Races, and Good Riddance. :-) I'm just hoping not to nearly wreck my car when this hits the radio like I nearly did with "Summerlong"... :-) "Stereochrome" would be a good single, so would "Good Riddance", and "Revenge" and "Julia" and... :-) James. * P.S. I braved near hurricane weather to hear BB Siege a Mike O'Connell project that Fil and Steve play in. It rocked. A little bird mentioned that this was all thrown together at the last minute, and I don't think anyone but those on stage could tell. It was fun even being wet, cold and weary, I had a great time; one of the highlights of the Hillside Festival this weekend! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 14:48:38 -0400 From: Jess Subject: yay SF!!! It may of been a long and tiring drive from London to Hamilton to see the concert, but it was well worth it just seeing her perform and getting to talk with her after!! This is Adie and I just wanted to let everyone know how completely in awe I was of Emm's performance in Hamilton yesterday. I was totally jonsed about seeing her for weeks, she did not let me down. The setlist was as follows: (order may not be totally correct as the night is still kind of a blur) - -Your Sort of Human Being - -Summerlong - -Stereochrome - -Hello Aquarius - -Crazy Train - -Hook Machine (which she finally played after my persistent begging) I also picked up her new album, Science Fair and it totally rocks! My favourite tracks so far are Stereochrome, You Do Something To Me and Disco Lights. Finally, I am desperately searching for the two girls that my sisters and I are forever in debt to for helping us meet Emm Gryner! If you get this message please write back to me at adie_81@hotmail.com because you guys rock and I would love to meet up with you at Lilith Fair (the second day of course!). Peace. Adie. Oh my, back from Woodstock. Not Hillside, but Woodstock in Rome, NY. I'm alive! It has indeed been a strange (but good!) weekend despite our lack of a car on the way home. (That's a totally different story) I listened to TOLY practically every night to fall asleep and drown out the 'show me your tits' chants. I think that CD helped me to maintain my sanity. I have never seen so many drugs, mud or naked people in my life. Anyway I'm sick and still tired but all I know is that I was very happy too have "Science Fair" waiting for me when I finally made it home this morning at 6 am. Science Fair is just as awesome as I thought it would be, if not better. I've only had the chance to listen to the album all the way through twice, but wow. I must admit that I may have said that I did not like "Julia", "Stardeep" and "Boy Races" *that* much when I first heard them live, but I take it all back. "Julia" is just amazing and I love "Boy Races". "Stardeep" puts me in a weird depressed trance-like thing (in a good way), but it's the general feeling I get from the album as a whole. I guess the same can be said about the previous two as well. I love depressing music. Absolut favourites of mine are: "Stereochrome" -loved it the first time I heard it, and now there are lyrics! "Boy Races" -awesome and my current favourite "Good Riddance" -great driving-in-the-summer-with-the-windows-rolled-down song...(yeah it does remind me of 'Summerlong', Trish). Emm is too cool. Everything sounds so awesome. That's it. I love the tonal quality on "Stardeep" its got just got my copy a few minutes ago and am 1/2 way through and am so blown away... amazing work, production, musicianship, songwriting, etc. incredible... i love "revenge"... jessica www.aquezada.com/jess ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 22:59:26 EDT From: Starfall18@aol.com Subject: Science Fair, Pittsburgh Backyard Concert Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......the joys of being an Emm fan. :) (warning-very long, I can be very detailed when I want to be) First off, the setlist before I forget. Your Sort of Human Being Phonecall 45 Acid Crazy Train-by request-me!-(these cicadas kept chiming in at just the right times, it was great) Revenge (on piano-holy moses, that was just...well i hadn't heard it before at all, so i didn't know what to compare it to, but the emotion coming through was just amazing) Julia Summerlong I think that's it, I might be missing one but I don't think I am. Well let me just say that I had been waiting (patiently) for Emm to get to this part of PA for a year, and she finally got here, and it was just amazing. If anyone remembers my wholle story from Lilith last year (I met her, and we continued to talk up until this year when she got too busy..), this just made everything wonderful. I got there (with my friend Sarah, a future Emm fan) a bit early, just after Emm had got there, so we stood around for awhile, just watching the set up. I had brought Emm some chocolate from this great local place, and so she noticed us and came over and was like "Have we met before??" and I nodded yes, and so I gave her the chocolate, to which she was graceful. Anyway...Kristy was there, she's awesome, Hi Kristy! :) Anyway...I talked a lot with Kristy, and she's cool, how'd she get that position anyway, travelling companion?? :) Hehehe....yeah well....uhhh yeah. I bought a t-shirt, a gray one, I will be wearing it to Lilith. :) Well ok I don't want to give too many details cuz I am probably boring everyone. But Emm is just such a great person, I can't get over that. I mean, she's just....cool. Ok Science Fair- WOW!!! I just got finished with Revenge, and I love "serenade" and everything wow, its just my new favorite cd. :):) I don't know, I just have a different feel when I think of it, I love it though. Already. I am a emmaholic, thats all there is to it :) Ok, well I will be rambling incoherently real soon so I shall go. Later! :) Emily ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V2 #164 ***********************************
