I've also noticed she hasn't done "Straight to Hell" (Clash >cover) >in a very long time, at least when I've been around. she played it at barrymore's in ottawa a couple months back and it was PFG (pretty frickin good) she also played the hip's "bobcaygeon" a month or so b4 that in kingston. i tried to get her to play it tonight but.. pffft! you know. she wasn't having it. >* BTW There's no good nickname for the people on this list yet, is i thought we were the headliners? POLLY BY NIRVANA!!!!!!! how about BNL's "hello city"? >Hahaha thats nasty. WHy not be the HeadLINERS?? :) yeah.. see? though i thought that was already our name..names. you know what i mean. >Sixpence None The Richer, Cibbo Matto, Susan Tedeschi and other indie susan tedeschi is grrrr8! i have her first cd and it is quite lovely. >Emm promised him that she'd do a song in french at >tonight's benefit show, so people who come to tonight's gig will be > >treated to a unique performance, en Francais. HA! that was hilarious! for those that weren't there... emm stumbled over the first verse a couple times. b4 she moved on and played the rest of the song very well, a wellwisher came up and offered her some words of advice en francais. they had a meaningful, thought-provoking conversation to which emm contributed such deep pontifications as "oui, oui", "c'est bon" and "marveilleux!" she obviously had NO idea what he was saying ..and the crowd roared their approval as the saying goes. i thought i spoke a little half mediocre french myself and i didn't understand him either. >prominent local musician and friend of Emm's... and that's all I'll i'm sure nobody guessed who you meant ;) but yes sarah did a very nice job. i can't wait to see her again. in concert i mean.. i'm not SEEING sarah. not that i would be against that. at all. =D that reminds me.. i figured out why so many of my pictures from the harbourfront were blurry.. my hands were a little shaky because i was nervous after meeting (or re-meeting - it's a word... now) so many pretty young ladies.. (ie: andrea, etc etc etc) there were even more of them at the c'est what show: like tricia for example (hi kristy!) so i probably wasted a bunch more (a bunch OF more? damn, why is grammar suddenly so difficult here at headline-girl?) film. ok ciao4now! r ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 04:30:00 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Thanks! I just want to say thanks to everyone who came out to the Benefit gig last night. It completely exceeded any expectations we had! And we could not have done it without you. Over $800 was raised for the Red Cross Balkan Relief fund. Thanks to the performers: Sarah, Linda, Trish, John and Jen and to our speakers Yazemine and Trung. Thanks to everyone who helped with the organization and publicity! Especially my fellow behind the scenes pal SteveIto and to Joni who was often on the other end of the phone from Emm working her magic! Tab did a fabo job with EmmCeeing :-) Look for her on the weekend news on CITY-TV. Thanks! Maybe a broadcast career or do you love the ink stains? ;-) Thanks to Yaz, Tab's sister in case you didn't know, for doing the door! And a very special thanks to Emm, you "picked up the phone and made it happen!" Without you I'm not sure it would've been this rousing a success! Thanks a thousand times over for using your connections for performing for landing your name to the marquee for just being you. You keep making me recall that you _are_ the coolest person I know. If I forgot anyone I am truly, truly sorry... ...but it is 4:30AM! It was great to see you all there and to meet new people and I can't thank you enough for simply showing up! It might not have seemed like much to you, but when you add all those little things together it makes something big! Take Care Y'all, James. I would also definitely recommend the new Beck--emm is the one who recommended it to me and I have listened to it very often since I bought it...incredible piece of work, I think... :) Jessica www.aquezada.com/jess ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 10:30:59 EDT From: "Priya = Me" Subject: c'est what wow. that was a great show. and all the performers were good. especially emm heh. im glad it was for a good cause too, cause you know. and she liked my lunchbox, and thats always good. heh. so i guess, thats all. priya. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 11:01:46 -0400 (EDT) From: "Julian C. He wasn't enunciating his words very well, but I think what he said amounted to "think of the emotions, not the instrumentation". I think it would have helped more if he'd shouted out the lyrics or something :) I can totally relate to Emm's reaction to him, though -- I was in Montreal a few weeks ago for the Jazz festival, and when anyone addressed me in French I had exactly the same reaction. :) Also I noticed she didn't do the "finger quote" thing last night :) Okay, I suppose I ought to say a few proper words about the show. First off, thanks to Tabassum, James, Steve and everyone else who helped out to plan and organize the show -- it went off without a hitch! (well, at least from the audience's perspective) The special guests were none other than the wonderful Miss Sarah Slean, and Trish Concepcion. All of the artists were excellent, and I was very impressed by John Copping's songwriting (I've never heard him before). The man is very amusing while performing though -- he reminds me of Kramer :) Also, Jen Lord's guitar playing blew me away; think Ani meets Amy Ray. It's great to know that we have such wonderful talent here in Toronto. BTW, next week, same time, same place, Arlene Bishop is playing. I'll probably be there... And of course, I should say that it was wonderful to hear Emm being able to play on a *real* piano two nights in a row. All right, I have to run to the store now... Plenty of artists wouldn't have even bothered to perform for a benefit like this, much less do a lion's share of the organizing of it. I can assure everyone that we ran into plenty of obstacles along the way, but Emm persevered along with the rest of us, and with grace and optimism and professionalism. Emm's one of a kind. >If I forgot anyone I am truly, truly sorry... ...but it is 4:30AM! >It was great to see you all there and to meet new people and I can't thank >you enough for simply showing up! An organizer's worst fear is that no one will show up; no one wants to be the only one at their own party. To see all the smiling, familiar faces pour in, and *keep* pouring in, warmed my heart to the core. You guys rock, every last one of you.
