Toronto's harbourfront saw an amazing show by Emm last night. Set in a great amphitheatre facing out onto the lake, it promised great things for Emm's show. And a promise of great things was all that the crowd had for quite awhile as the show was quite late getting started... Emm had one of those nights where she had a great rapport established with the crowd (even though many of them were grumbling before the show about the late start). Emm seemed a bit disorganized, forgetting to bring out a setlist, pick, and capo, but she took advantage of it to create a loose, informal, and fun atmosphere that the crowd really connected to. When supplied with a guitar pick and a name by an audience member named Roger, Emm was not content to simply pick on her guitar, she also had to pick on poor Roger (for the whole night!), who good-naturedly took it all and responded in kind. Hope he comes to the show tonight. Later on when Emm did her patented "audience pick-a-song" routine, a couple in the audience revealed that they were soon to be married, to which Emm replied (paraphrasing here) that she had a lot of respect for that, that she wanted to get married herself but that she'd come to the realization that she had to have a boyfriend first. When the laughter subsided a bit a plaintative "helloooo" wafted up from Roger's general direction, drawing a second round of laughter from the crowd... Anyway __?__ and Tracy picked Paul Weller over Thrush Hermit, if you're curious! There was lots more fun too, like when a boat manned by a loud cover band floated lazily by, distracting the crowd and Emm and prompting Emm to do an impromptu ("prompting emm to do an impromptu?" I really need to work on my phrasing, don't I?) little dance routine, and to wait for it to sail by so she could play a "sensitive song". SPEAKING of which, the quotes remind me she shared with the crowd that she'd promised a friend she'd stop putting quotation marks around her words with her fingers (a la Dr. Evil... "LASER"), something she wasn't totally able to suppress during the show! She played a good mix of songs from all her albums, including Hook Machine, Alcatraz, Aquarius, Phone Call 45, Acid, Summerlong, Stardeep, Julia, Stereochrome, Revenge, her "Crazy Train" and "You Do Something To Me", and others that I can't recall off the top of my head. You guys are going to love the new album, the Science Fair songs are incredible. Emm was really talkative last night and there was lots of chat between each song. Anyways I need to get some work done. Hope you guys can all come out to the show tonight... if last night's show was any indication, tonight's show is NOT TO BE MISSED! There were a couple of french guys in the audience (one of them from France, apparently!) and Emm promised him that she'd do a song in french at tonight's benefit show, so people who come to tonight's gig will be treated to a unique performance, en Francais. Plus of course we have some other great artists and a couple of very special surprise guest artists, which should interest people on the Emm lists and also fans of a certain other prominent local musician and friend of Emm's... and that's all I'll say about that! Don't forget, proceeds go to a very worthy cause, that of Balkan relief, to help those victimized by the war in Yugoslavia. The war is over but the crisis continues... thousands remain in the refugee camps, rebuilding shattered lives is a task of years or decades rather than months. Your support means everything. And right at "Julia" too, which is still probably my current favourite Emm song. A very long set list, to those disappointed at no encore this was probably her longest set in a long time... ...and she played right up to the 11:00 noise law curfew. :-) Rock on! (1) Phonecall 45 (2) July (3) Hello Aquarius (4) Stardeep (5) Hook Machine (6) Your Sort of Human Being (7) Crazy Train (Ozzy cover) (8) Stereochrome (9) Wisdom Bus (10) Julia (11) You Do Something to Me (Paul Weller cover)+ (12) Summerlong (13) 89 Days of Alcatrez (14) Revenge (15) Acid (on the set list but also by _very_ popular request :) ) + Julian asked about this one, mentioning he's only heard it once in a while. Emm used to play this quite a bit at the Freetimes gigs with Noah and Sarah Slean, but she doesn't do it all that much these days. I wish she could have had more of the band there since she only plays "Sabotage" (Beastie Boys) when everyone's there and that's probably my favourite Emm cover. I've also noticed she hasn't done "Straight to Hell" (Clash cover) in a very long time, at least when I've been around. James * BTW There's no good nickname for the people on this list yet, is there? E.g. like Soupers on the Sarah Slean list or Fumblers on that other Sarah's list... ...Headers sounds sort of derogatory...Girls... um...no... P.S. Emm covers _I_'d_ like to see: Rollins' Band "Liar", cub "Little Star", D.O.A. "Smash the State", the Subhumans "Mickey Mouse is Dead", Bowie "Bewley Brothers" or "Diamond Dogs"... I'm betraying my punk roots here... :-) P.P.S. Yet another reminder about the Balkan Relief gig, $6, way cool music! Emm and piles (well, ok 5) of other performers and a very worthy cause. Please come, say "hi" and hang out!! Hahaha thats nasty. There are also articles on Leigh Nash of Sixpence None The Richer, Cibbo Matto, Susan Tedeschi and other indie rock grrls. (Oh look, the Emm write-up is by our very own Jessica Weiser. ;) On another topic... in Emm's new bio at Northern Sounds, she talks about some of her current musical influences, such as Nick Drake, Mercury Rev, Sonic Youth, Beck, Mazzy Star, Transistor Sound And Lighting Co., Creeper Lagoon and Ron Sexsmith. (http://webhome.idirect.com/~nsounds/emm/emminfobio.htm) I'm sure most of us have heard some Sonic Youth, Beck and Mazzy Star, but I'd like to hear what you know about some of the others. I've heard that Transistor Sound And Lighting Co. did some song remixes with Emm for the 45 promo single. And Nick Drake was an English songwriter who recorded a few awesome LPs back in the early 70's before a tragic early death. [I saw a Nick Drake box set import today.] Maybe someone should borrow Emm's CD collection and make a mix tape? ;) I've got a Ron Sexsmith disc I'll trade for something else on that list. :) Tell me what CD to get!
