Dunn" Subject: rediscovering "The Original Leap Year" Sometimes when you don't play an album for a long time, you forget how good it is. Yesterday I grabbed OLY off my CD rack and put it in and was thrilled to find that it's even better than I remembered it being (I don't recall the last time I played it). I remember when Public first came out, I hated the album and listened solely to OLY, but eventually it tided me over and OLY fell by the wayside. However, I can say that I truly think some songs are *much* better in their OLY versions - -- Wisdom Bus, for example. Perhaps the first thirty or forty seconds of it are the most wonderful; the combination of the drum machine and Emm's piano playing which sounds strangely metallic, make it sound "city-like". I know it sounds kind of funny, but it reminds me of all those music videos where the singer is standing in the middle of some office building lobby with people milling about at high speed, and them just singing away. (or maybe it's just me thinking of the cover of Public, with Emm standing on a NY street corner with cars milling about :) ) Anyway, I urge you to "rediscover" OLY if you haven't played it in a while. It's wonderful :) - - Julian [ Julian C. I don't know that OLY versions are "better" in a technical sense or whatever, but they are so much more raw and personal... I've said it before, but OLY is probably my favorite CD ever. I listened to it almost every day from aug 97 on and still have yet to grow tired of it... I love how I can put it in my walkman and by song 6, it's already such a powerful CD, and it's only half over. :) There are so many amazing little details that make that CD so, so good, I love it... Anyway, i could probably rave about it forever, but I won't, but if you haven't ordered a copy yet--do it asap. :) "Fetching Decay" has to be one of the best songs ever... :) - -jessica ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 18:46:09 EDT From: TrishTLC@aol.com Subject: OAC: Ron Sexsmith So, I'm hearing rave reviews about Ron Sexsmith, a Toronto based singer-songwriter, and how he's one of today's best songwriters(next to our Emm of course). Does anyone have his new album? If so, please let me know what you think b/c I'm itching to buy a new CD and I have no idea what to buy. ~TLC ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 18:46:05 EDT From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: buying leap year hey, whoops: i forgot--if you don't know already, you can order leap year now online, visit here: www.bigfoot.com/~deaddaisy or http://webhome.idirect.com/~nsounds/emm/dd-orderform.htm :) jessica http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess <-- new website coming THIS WEEK! :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 18:58:57 -0400 From: Jess Subject: Re: rediscovering "The Original Leap Year" At 05:49 PM 24/05/1999 -0400, Julian C. It's good--his songwriting is beautiful and so is his voice. But, personally, I prefer Hayden over him... If you're in need of music, here's some suggestions: Bic Runga "Drive," Patty Griffin "Flaming Red," Unbelievable Truth "Almost Here," Massive Attack "Mezzanine," Beth Orton "Central Revervation," Underworld "Beaucoup Fish" (listen to this one first, though, cause it's different...), Imogen Heap "I Megaphone," Sarah Slean "Universe," Jeff Buckley "Grace," and someone sent me a tape of a songwriter named Fisher. Her stuff is pretty good... The CD is "one". Jessica http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V2 #109 ***********************************
