Dunn" (by way of rannie ) Subject: Trish added to the prelilith show I have just confirmed that Tricia will be playing a set at the prelilith show on the friday night in Toronto (August 20th.) more details TBA Already on the bill is Jessica Weiser You can hear find out more about trish and hear her music at http://star-gazing.iscool.net Or you can check out her song stargazing at the online lilith talent search at http://sharehouse.xoom.com/lilith.php3 Here is a bio on Tricia After hearing Tricia Concepcion's Demo CD, "Trail of Crumbs", it is surprising to know that she has been songwriting for just a short time. With less than a year of songwriting experience, Concepcion displays a mature, but diverse mixture of songs on the album, providing most of the instrumentation(acoustic guitar, keyboards, drums, percussion). Concepcion, 20, hails from Southgate, Michigan, a small city outside of Detroit. The youngest of three children, she was brought up in a musical family. Each child was taught how to play at least three instruments growing up. Piano lessons came first at the age of five, but only at the request of her parents. Tricia was too much of a tomboy and too much into sports to be interested. The lessons lasted for seven years, until she found an instrument of her choice - the drums. At the age of 12, she began playing drums at her own interest. She played snare drum in the marching band throughout Jr. High and High School and won numerous competitions with the drumline. She is also self-taught at the drum set, teaching herself on her old, beat up, drum set she got when she was 12. Still a tomboy, she played many sports throughout high school and didn't give much thought into songwriting, but she did experiment with bands. She and two classmates entered the high school talent show and won an honorary mention playing a cover of "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath with Tricia on drums! She also tried playing keyboards for a band, but certain differences with the band drove her to be on her own. At the beginning of 1998, she became interested in playing piano again and she also began playing guitar. With many dramatic changes in her life, she began searching for a way to express herself. She found that songwriting was the perfect method. Recorded at Rising Sun Studios in Grosse Ile, MI, and produced by Tricia Concepcion, Matt Thompson, and Mike Concepcion, "Trail of Crumbs" is just a small taste of what's to come in her debut album. Her debut album, "Anything is Everything", due out in the Summer of '99, will consist of music like piano ballads, a upbeat Beatle-esque tune, a walk-along song and emotional pieces. By all means this is a cd you do not want to pass up. Her brother, Mike Concepcion, provided the electric guitars, and bass on the album. Throughout 1999, Tricia will promote her album while playing shows in various clubs and coffeehouses and while attending college. She is currently at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and is anticipating graduation in the college of Occupational Therapy in the year 2001. **************************************************** Rannie Turingan Toronto, Ontario, Canada ICQ:3857207 AIM:ranzTO http://webhome.idirect.com/~rannie/ **************************************************** ______________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe, write to torontofumblers-unsubscribe@listbot.com Start Your Own FREE Email List at http://www.listbot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 11:36:28 -0400 From: "100% Pure Intensity" Subject: Re: Hello & Trish's MP3 Hey guys....I'm the one maintaining Trish's website. I think it's a great idea. Also I think the easiest thing (for us, not necessarily for Jess) is if she's the one everyone sends money to, since she's collecting birthday card stuff anyways. As for presenting it to Emm, I'm not sure. We can probably get them to send us something "such and such amount has been donated in your name to the Free Tibet Campaign" or whatever. We can send that either to Emm directly or to someone like Kristy to give to Emm directly. Actually, what might be easier all around is if we each make a donation to the Free Tibet Campaign ourselves and then email Jess about it, along with the amount, and she can make a list of contributors to include in the birthday card (the individual amounts don't necessarily have to be included in the card, but it would be nice if we could at least tell her how much was donated in total). The Free Tibet Campaign is the organization Emm suggested when I asked her about the charitable organizations she likes for the website. The URL for the free tibet campaign is http://www.freetibet.org . They sell badges, shirts, etc. at the Free Tibet Campaign website. Along with your donation, order a badge or something, then get a picture of yourself with the wearing the badge or shirt and holding a copy of one of Emm's CD. Then we can all send our pics to Jess and then we can present Emm with a whole pile of pictures of us proudly wearing our symbols of Tibetan support for Emm. Just think how cool it would be for Emm to have a ton of such pictures of her fans, rallying behind her in her support for a cause she holds near and dear to her heart. It's unlikely that we can get this done by her birthday, but the pictures we can send in later. Emm is such an unbelievably sweet person and she more than anyone I know deserves the joy something like this could bring a person. It's a little work, but it will be a beautiful thing if we can bring it together. Free Tibet Campaign a. What Is Free Tibet Campaign? Free Tibet Campaign is a campaigning organisation that stands for the Tibetans' right to decide their own future. It campaigns for an end to the Chinese occupation of Tibet and for the Tibetans' fundamental human rights to be respected. It is independent of all governments and is funded by its members and supporters. b. Recent Initiatives Some of our recent initiatives which Free Tibet Campaign has undertaken with the support of our members include: * Sending a team to Beijing to monitor Tony Blair's (British Prime Minister) official visit to China. This ensured that the world's media received up-to-the-minute information about Tibet. Not only did this result in excellent press coverage but it put pressure on the British government's foreign policy. * Unfurling a 'Free Tibet' banner in front of Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji at his official meeting with British politicians and businessmen. The story was carried by much of the world's press. * Launching an international campaign which resulted in Holiday Inn, who worked in partnership with the Chinese authorities, pulling out of Tibet. 2. The Current Situation in Tibet Since invading Tibet in 1949 the Chinese have operated - in their own words- a policy of "merciless repression". This repression, which has accounted for hundreds of thousands of deaths, the destruction of thousands of monasteries and the imprisonment of countless Tibetans, continues today. Even saying the words "Free Tibet" is enough to warrant arrest. Monks and nuns are forced to denounce their religious leader, the Dalai Lama, otherwise they face years of imprisonment and hard labour. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the boy identified as the 11th Panchen Lama, the highest spiritual leader after the Dalai Lama, was abducted by Chinese authorities in 1995 and has not been seen since. Gedhun who was just 6 years old when he was abducted is believed to be world's youngest political prisoner. The Chinese have since appointed their own Panchen Lama. China's population transfer policy means that Tibetans are being reduced to a minority in their own country, being outnumbered by Chinese immigrants. Tibetans are discriminated against in the field of employment and education and have to use the Chinese language for all official purposes. These forms of repression will continue until world opinion brings such overwhelming weight to bear that the Chinese will have to change their policy. (Further details can be found in section 5.) 3. What You Can Do? Free Tibet Campaign believes that individuals can change public opinion, which can in turn affect policy. It is done by influencing decision makers; most remain ill-informed of issues, or ignore them until they are forced to listen. Each voice that supports Tibet counts, many voices show that the issue deserves consideration, and thousands of voices can start to affect policy. Free Tibet Campaign uses its voice by talking directly to the decision makers. The larger our membership the stronger our voice becomes. When our voice is not heard or is ignored we undertake campaigns to make sure we are noticed and that Tibet is not forgotten. We encourage our members to actively take part in campaigns as well. Our quarterly newsletter details upcoming campaigns and reports back on ongoing campaigns. Schemes are available for those members who wish to become further involved. So what can you do now? Your interest in Tibet and Free Tibet Campaign is a start. But being aware of the situation is not enough, the situation in Tibet is desperate. Raising awareness and educating others of the plight is something everyone can do. But best of all you can join Free Tibet Campaign. You will be adding your voice to a growing movement, helping us to work more effectively and we'll keep you up-to-date with the situation in Tibet and give you the opportunity to make your own voice louder and stronger! Free Tibet Campaign is funded principally by subscriptions and donations. Our members receive a quarterly magazine, up-to-date information and an opportunity to take an active part in supporting Tibet. We need to increase our membership to make our voices heard, and to make Tibet a truly international concern. Please Join Today! 4. Major Allegations: Key Facts on the Chinese Occupation in Tibet a. Invasion, Occupation and Refugees - - China's invasion of Tibet by 35,000 troops in 1949 was an act of unprovoked aggression. There is no generally accepted legal basis for China's claim of sovereignty. Ten years later 100,000 Tibetans fled with the Dalai Lama. - - Reprisals for the 1959 National Uprising alone involved the elimination of 87,000 Tibetans by the Chinese count alone. Yet Tibetan exiles claim that 430,000 died during the Uprising and the subsequent 15 years of guerrilla warfare, which continued until the US withdrew support. - - In 1993, the UN High Commissioner for refugees handled 3,700 Tibetan cases. By 1994, an estimated 200 Tibetans per month were illegally crossing the Himalayas into Nepal. To avoid detection many refugees use the 19,000 ft. Nangpa-La pass below Everest. Nepalese authorities, however often turn refugees over to the Chinese. b. Chinese Administration of Tibet - - China undertook by the 1951 Agreement not to interfere with Tibet's existing system of government and society, but never kept these promises in eastern Tibet and in 1959 reneged on the treaty altogether. - - China has renamed two out of Tibet's three provinces as parts of the Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan, and renamed the remaining province of U'Tsang as Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). - - There is no evidence to support China's claim that TAR is autonomous: all local legislation is subject to approval of the central government in Beijing; all local government is subject to the regional party, which in Tibet has never been run by a Tibetan. c. Chinese Justice: Protest and Prisons - - Exile sources estimate that up to 260,000 people died in prisons and labour camps between 1950 and 1984. - - Over 3,000 people are believed to have been detained for political offences since September 1987, many of them for writing letters, distributing leaflets or talking to foreigners about the Tibetans' right to independence. The vast majority of political inmates are monks or nuns. - - In 1998 there were 550 known political prisoners in Tibet. The average sentence for a Tibetan political prisoner was 7.8 years. - - Maltreatment of political prisoners, including beatings and torture are commonplace. Between 1987 and 1998 at least 32 Tibetan political prisoners have died as a direct result of maltreatment, either in custody or shortly after release. d. Control of Education - - Chinese replaced Tibetan as the official language. Despite official pronouncements, there has been no practical change in this policy. Without an adequate command of Chinese, Tibetans find it difficult to get work in the state sector. - - Secondary school children are taught all classes in Chinese. Although English is a requirement for most university courses, Tibetan school children cannot learn English unless they forfeit study of their own language. - - At all levels of Tibetan education, the Chinese have since 1994 strengthened their drive to re-educate young Tibetans about their cultural past. They use a distorted history programme which omits reference to an independent Tibet. e. Religious Intolerance - - Religious practice was forcibly suppressed until 1979, and up to 6,000 monasteries and shrines have been destroyed. - - The 1982 Constitution of the PRC guarantees freedom of religious belief and yet China seeks to curb the total number of monks and nuns entering monasteries. Nuns released from prison face double jeopardy as they are frequently banned from rejoining their nunneries. - - In 1995 the Chinese authorities abducted the child recognised by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, and installed their own candidate. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, who was then 6 years old, has not been since his abduction, despite numerous appeals from the United Nations and governments world-wide. f. Chinese Immigrants Flood Tibet - - Beijing now openly admits a national policy of deliberately encouraging Chinese settlers into Tibet. Resettlement of Chinese migrants has placed Tibetans in the minority in many areas, including Lhasa, causing chronic unemployment among Tibetans. - - Official figures put the number of non-Tibetans in the TAR at 79,000. Free Tibet Campaign believes the figure to be closer to 250,000 to 300,000. For the whole of Tibet the 1990 census gave a Chinese population of 4.2 million, and a Tibetan population of 4.59 million. Free Tibet Campaign estimates the total number of Chinese in Tibet as 5 to 5.5 million. g. Nuclear Tibet - - The Indian Government reported that three nuclear missile sites, and an estimated 300,000 troops are stationed on Tibetan territory. - - China has admitted to dumping nuclear waste on the Tibetan plateau. There is a 20 sq. km dump for radioactive pollutants near Lake Kokonor, the largest lake on the Tibetan plateau. h. Tibet's Environment - - Tibet's fragile eco-system has been seriously damaged since the Chinese occupation. The rapid degradation of the Tibetan Plateau, which is the source of the majority of Asia's great rivers, could result in disastrous regional and even global consequences. - - In 1998 China banned logging in areas of Tibet due to great flooding. The full impact of China's clear-cutting policy may not be known for years. - - Uranium deposits in Tibet are said to be some of the largest in the world. Those living near uranium mines have reported serious illnesses and deaths. - - A hydro-electrical power plant has been built on Yamdrok Tso, Tibet's most sacred lake and one of its largest. Despite assurances, a detailed environmental assessment has yet to be carried out despite the facility being on-line for several years. It is feared the lake will be drained within 50 years. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> F R E E T I B E T C A M P A I G N 1 Rosoman Place, London EC1R 0JY, U.K. Telephone: +44 (0)171 833 9958 Fax: +44 (0)171 833 3838 http://www.freetibet.org Email: tibetsupport@gn.apc.org - an independent membership organisation campaigning in support of the rights of the Tibetan people to freedom and independence. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> The views expressed here are not necessarily those of Free Tibet Campaign. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 14:53:02 -0400 From: owner-headline-girl@smoe.org Subject: Trish's Website (Music Section) Hi everyone!
