There was less than 50 people there. The venue (grant hall) is really really nice. good sound i thought. Sarah Slean opened up and i was very impressed. i had to buy her cd (universe) of course since i had never seen her before. She played with kevin fox on cello, another fellow on drums and a back-up singer whose names i failed to hear. After that treat, emm came on stage and played a beautiful set (you know, like usual) accompanied by steve on drums, phil on bass and kevin on cello\acoustic guitar. i didnt keep track of the set list but worth noting was a fantastic cover of Bobcaygeon (yes by the hip because it was kingston after all) i hope she does it again. she also did one of her new songs (it may have been that one she did at the philo kings show which i missed). but my favourite of the night was a number she dedicated to sarah. I'm not sure what it is called (Julia i think) but it is a BEAUTIFUL song and i could swear that i've heard her do it before (at sheridan college last year). she didn't say if it was original or not but i think maybe it is) anyways after that esthero came out to play. i love the cd "breath from another" but i wasn't sure what to expect live. they have a 6 piece band (drums, bass, guitar, trumpet, keys, turntable-ist/rapper) in addition to esthero and another girl on vocals. overall i was impressed with the musicianship (the rythem section was just psychotic) and esthero's vocals are everything the cd represents them to be. but judging from that one show, i would say their live act needs work at least from a technical point of view.. or point of ear. i never thought i would say this but the sound was too bass heavy. when the guy was rapping i couldnt make out a word he was saying. he sounded more like a drum set than a human voice. i would say the sound was just muddy. often different instruments and esthero's vocals got muffled and strangled beneath the weight of soemthing(s) else. and a roadie kept running on stage to the point of distraction.. he even ended up in some of my photos. Part of the problem was that it was too loud. i like a lot of loud bands (like big sugar) but if the equipment can't handle it then there isn't much point of turning it up because it sounds like crap! the bass was so heavy that i nearly got a concussion getting some close-ups standing in front of the speakers. never mind the hearing damage even though i was wearing plugs.. i could feel my brain shaking in my skull and i could hardly keep the camera steady enough for photos. (it was kinda cool actually) anyways to make a long story even longer you can see some photos at http://www.soundcheck.ca i'll put up some sarah slean photos and esthero photos later roberto - --- seek simplicity AND DISTRUST IT - A.N.Whitehead - --- Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V2 #65 **********************************
