Okay, someone pull this guy's head out of his ass. Emm is a way better songwriter (she's won _how many_ contests?), singer (a capella "This Mad," how she says "high" in "Summerlong" is the best :), instrumentalist (*eight* on "Public" alone), and she's cute, too. (Melanie is just ick.) Jessica wrote: >I won't make the Melanie Doane fans angry with my thoughts I don't feel like being so nice to them. There's simply no comparison between Gryner and Doane. And to offer a bit of evidence that I am being honest here, and not biased, a quick story: I picked up Public solely because of the nagging of Steve, after hearing Sarah Slean and such. Anyway, I gave it a couple spins, thought, "okay, no big deal." I caught her in Hamilton, at La Luna, opening for Rufus Wainwright. The place was crowded, and I managed to squeeze my way in to where I could just barely see her. She was *amazing*. I'm walking out of the show thinking "Wow. She is _really_ good." It was Emm's performance that won me over. And I'm now very much a fan of hers. If you know me, you know this to be true. Public is now one of my favourite CDs. I know one of the times Paul saw Melanie was at a bookstore appearance (and that was the only time Jess saw her), and believe me when I say that it really wasn't representative of just how powerful her shows can be. Except for that bookstore show I haven't seen her in at least a couple of years, but before "Adams Rib" came out I thought that Melanie Doane was one of the most underappreciated performers around. I saw her play at a magical (and criminally poorly attended) show at the Bathurst St Theatre 2 or 3 years ago with Suzanne Little and Damnhait Doyle. Melanie Doane OWNED the place that night. (Tab was there too and she'll back me up on this). I'd really gone to see Suzanne Little, and Damnhait Doyle who was getting hugely hyped back then, but for me, Melanie put on a show that put the others to shame. Playing a charming brand of maritime flavoured folky pop and switching between guitar and piano and SCORCHING electric fiddle, she completely captivated the entire crowd. Since then I've brought at least half a dozen friends to various club shows of hers, and each of them walked away in complete awe of her. When that reviewer said she was a good instrumentalist, he was right on the money, she really *is* that good. She disappeared for awhile after those club shows as she recorded the current album and I went through Melanie withdrawal for awhile. Then her name came up in a really surprising way, at least to me. I went to see Kevin Fox play a solo show at last year's NXNE (North by NorthEast) festival, at least my 11th or 12th time seeing him play (6th or 7th time doing his own stuff), and he made a remark about writing a song with a friend of his, Melanie Doane, which completely floored me. I couldn't believe I didn't know about that. Anyway I think it was around that time that James came up with the 6 degrees of Kevin Fox thing. But I digress. This all is not to say that I think she should win the Juno or anything. I don't think anyone here needs any convincing that I'm a big supporter of Emm Gryner. But I also think that Melanie has earned the right to be seriously considered for a Juno, (although strictly speaking she isn't a new artist, but anyways), just as Emm has. Sony spent a fairly large amount of money on Melanie's campaign and is promoting her like crazy in Canada... Emm, on the other hand, got kind of lost in the merger shuffle and has gained a lot of fans, respectably, by her live shows. And I think _Public_ is 10x the CD that Melanie's is... I also LOVE Hayden (you guys should SO get his CD "the closer I get" -- it is breathtaking. very moody and beautiful)... - -jessica http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Mar 1999 10:41:01 EST From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: Re: Say it ain't so! I take back my post. Yes, she does deserve the nomination... Steve's post made me think about it all a little more... I just don't think her songwriting is as good as Emm's, but that's okay... :) I did like the song "adam's rib"... jessica ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Mar 1999 12:08:03 -0500 From: Paul Schreiber Subject: Re: Say it ain't so! When I was last in Toronto (September - December), Melanie's face was all over subway platforms. They spent a _lot_ of money on a media campaign. Fortunately (IMNERHO), they haven't managed to turn her into a phenomonon (Spice Girls-esque or otherwise). Sony did her this fancy-ass website (which is well done fwiw). Until Lilith, I hadn't seen a performer push their web site on stage. :-) I've heard 'em talking about their new CDs, but "www.melaniedoane.com" was a first. Mercury/A&M/Polygram (pre-merger) never seemed to do a great job of promoting their artists, especially the ones I liked (Emm, Steve). Except Sheryl Crow, who's already well-established and a multiple grammy-winner. I remember hearing something about Melanie actually having something to with the website's actual design, b/c she studied that at some point in her life. How true that is, the site if pretty cool :-) Anyway, imho, Emm's an overall better musician. I've seen them both perform live at least twice and I can't compare them in that way, but, album wise, "Public" is much stronger imho. Maybe it's just me, but a lot of "Adam's Rib" sounds the same to me. Oh well, she'll probably win anyway :-( ~Andrea! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICQ: 10294764 AOL IM: TheAndyC http://listen.to/canadianmusic - http://listen.to/boots - http://travel.to/thecomfortzone - canadian-music@smoe.org PROUDLY CANADIAN MUSIC WEB RING http://surf.to/canadianmusic ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 14:03:38 -0600 From: gatekeeper@herzig.com (Gatekeeper) Subject: Juno Awards With the Juno's tonight, I wanted to post my thoughts in an email to the group. I think Emm is a logical choice for winner in her category (Best New Solo Artist) for the following reasons. - -Emm's probably worked harder than anyone else nominated. She's toured across the country and promoted herself in a very intelligent, thoughtful way. - -"Public" is probably one of the best CD's for 1998. It's an incredible mix of songs about human emotions and relationships. The lyrics and music are simply wonderful. - -Emm is extremely talented in so many ways - songwriting, musical performance, instrumentation, to name a few. - - I have seem Emm perform live several times now. One thing that strikes me more and more is how she grabs the attention of the audience. People of all ages are usually awestruck when they listen to her during a live performance. Emm has a very powerful voice and she also has charisma. If Emm wins a Juno award, it could really kick start her career to the next level. It also sends the right message to all the young Canadian musicians who are trying to make it. Talent, hard work and a humble attitude do go a long way to being a success. If Emm doesn't win, it's not the end of the world. But let's all wish Emm the very best luck! I do think he has moments of brilliance, but they're too few and far between. His live shows have improved a lot lately, though. And while I think Emm deservs to win this category (prediction: Bruce Guthro will), Melanie is equally deserving. I'm a little leery about "Best *New* Artist", 'cause she's been around forever, but a lot of people are only hearing her for the first time this past year, and she didn't get nearly enough nominations, so I suppose they gave her that one to make up for it. - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Mar 1999 18:31:43 EST From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: re: Northern Sounds show #2 (was: re: headline-girl digest...)
