Dunn" Subject: emm at winterfest in toronto Earlier this evening I went to see Emm open for Jim Cuddy at Nathan Phillips Square (city hall), as part of Toronto's Winterfest festivities. I think everyone there would agree that it was *damn* cold, but Emm was still *damn* good. :) I don't have a penchant for memorizing setlists, but one item of note is that she did a new song called "Revenge", which I really like. Emm intro'd it by saying "this song goes out to all those people who have ever wanted to seek revenge" :) or something of the sort. As you can probably tell it's a rather bitter song, but it's also kind of sad. In total she played maybe five or six songs, ending with "Wisdom Bus". Despite the fact that she must have been FREEZING her fingers off, she performed admirably. I got a few good pictures which I will post on my website as soon as I develop the film. Anyhow, I'm off school for reading week, so I'm heading back to my parents' place in northern Ontario tomorrow :) - - Julian (jealous at his friends who went to Daytona Beach for reading week) [ Julian C. Hiya folks, just got back from a night of musical extremes... it started in crystalline splendour and finished in icy hell. The start was of course Emm's Winterfest show at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto, and it was very like the gorgeous crystalline ice castle sculpture that, on Valentine's eve, romanced all eyes at the front of the square; it was a work of incredible beauty but it evoked some feelings of sadness that its magnificence was a fleeting one and would inevitably end soon. And it was F-F-F-FREEEEEEEZZZZZZINGG!!!!! That anyone could even hold their instruments in the bitter cold was astounding to me... that they could play as well as Emm, Kevin, Stephen, and their bassist did was unfathomable. A nice surprise for me was seeing Kevin harmonize with Emm on backup vocals; he has a gorgeous voice which really isn't used enough. Emm suggested afterwards that she might go to see a band called Bionic play at one of the local clubs, but my friends had promised to go to see a friend play at another club somewhere else. I should have taken Emm's suggestion; the bands playing at the club we went to... well... a friend put it best after one particularly horrible band ended their excruciating set by saying he had to go and clean the blood out of his ears. Never go and see a band called Alvy. *shudder* Oh, at the show tonight Tab gave me a copy of the Vines magazine that Emm was in. It was really cool because it was written by an old high school friend of mine named Mike White. It was one of life's strange coincidences because I met him at a party back in my hometown of Brantford during this past Thanksgiving after not seeing him for almost 10 years. Someone happened to mention Emm's name and before I could say that "hey, I run a website for her" he exclaimed "hey, I interviewed her!" Out of that interview would come this article, which he said he had a difficult time writing. You would never know it from reading the article, of all the articles I've read about Emm, his is my favourite. Just look at his great opening paragraph: "It bled out of radios at the peak of the July heatwave delirium, and couldn't have sounded as if it belonged there more. It sounded joyful; its chorus anthemic and instant. Closer inspection, however, revealed it to be melancholic and wistful - its celebratory refrain of "All summerlong/You made me high when I was down" swiftly falling away to a minor chord and the weary resignation of "Now the summer's gone/I gotta say something feels wrong." Its deeper meaning was available to those who cared to find it. Those who didn't were content to revel in that sort of bliss exclusive to a (supposedly) meaningless pop song. It was, and is, Emm Gryner's "Summerlong." It was a hit, and it was a hell of an entrance." Anyway I urge you all to look for it. The magazine is called Vines, which unfortunately is rather difficult to find. You can order a copy from the publisher though: Vines Magazine 159 York St. St. Catharines, ON L2R 6E9 CANADA tel: 905-682-4509 fax: 905-682-8219 email: editor@iaw.on.ca Sample copies are $3 plus shipping. I might eventually put it on the website, but not while it's still on the newsstands, especially since it's a brand new magazine and they need all the sales they can get right now. Steve? James? Kristy said on the other list that it's out now. She has a pretty reliable source, so I believe it's safe to say that it's now available at fine Cicero shows everywhere. Don't forget--the contest is still going on till Thursday! Lots of entries so far, and the winner gets cool stuff! See the archives for details if you missed it. www.smoe.org/lists/headline-girl - -jessica - -- Last night I and 200-300 others braved the cold (-8 Celsius) to see Emm Gryner open for Jim Cuddy at Nathan Philips Square as part of Toronto's Winterfest '99 celebrations. This is the first time I've seen Emm perform live, and I was really impressed. She said it was the first time she had performed outdoors in the winter, and asked the audience to bear with her, but neither she nor her band seemed to have any problems with the cold during their short six-song set. I've been listening to Public since last summer, but it's never really captured my attention yet. Last night, though, it was different. "89 days of Alcatraz", "Wisdom bus", and "Summerlong" all were terrific, but I think the best song she did was a new one called "Revenge" which Emm said she wrote just a couple of weeks ago. She performed it with keyboard, cello, bass, and drums (as she did for Wisdom bus and 89 days). I listened to Public again this morning, and found that I was hearing it in a whole new light. It's interesting how attending even a short concert like this can have this kind of effect. At any rate, Emm now has at least one more fan, and judging by the reaction of the audience, probably many more. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 20:24:12 EST From: Starfall18@aol.com Subject: Jessica Weiser winter update 1999 newsletter [note: Please don't reply to any of the lists if you want to write Jess; just reply to the address in the email.
