The CMW web site (www.cmw.net) is starting to put up an artist roster. Will some of the, umm, local talent be playing? (i.e. Sarah, Emm, Cicero, et cetera) Anyone know? Take a big, nasty sans like Franklin Gothic Heavy, and stick it next to a wonderful, flowing italic like New Baskerville. Call it Black Thursday. A week from Thursday, some 3,000 firings may begin at the combined Universal-PolyGram music division, sources say. The Jan. 21 date has been discussed in recent meetings, most notably in Los Angeles this week, when upper management of the combined Universal-PolyGram unit -- including Doug Morris, Bruce Hack, Zach Horowitz, Jimmy Iovine, Jay Boberg, Jim Caparro, Norman Cheng, Manolo Diaz, managing directors from around the world and other label chiefs -- met to discuss strategy and give presentations of upcoming releases. Despite the impending layoffs, the meetings were described as "upbeat," with considerable time given to discussing music matters now that the company is No. 1 in market share. While the layoffs are not yet set in stone (indeed, the date of the euphemistically labeled "restructuring" has been pushed back before and could be again), sources said the staffs of A&M and Geffen will be hit hardest. A Universal spokesman had no comment. -Hollywood Reporter In the wake of Seagram's acquisition of PolyGram, one of the latter's record labels may soon be sold to a long-running competitor. British-based music giant EMI Group Plc., the world's third-largest music company, is in exploratory discussions to acquire London Records, a U.K.-based independent label whose acts include All Saints and New Order. The label is owned by a trust linked to PolyGram and its music division president, Roger Ames. EMI, though, isn't the only potential buyer: Ames has held discussions with several multinational groups, including Warner Music Group, BMG and even Seagram about London's future. It is expected that Ames will leave the PolyGram-Universal fold, but the fate of London is unclear, sources said. Reps for all parties involved declined comment. -Hollywood Reporter - --- Other Random News: Universal Music UK announces new label structure Now that the Universal and PolyGram merger is complete, the new structure of Universal Music UK has been announced. The company will be centred around three labels. Mercury and Polydor will be joined by the new label Universal/Island as the three principal labels. The label is a combination of Polygram's label Island and Universal Records. Mercury and Polydor were already stand-alone labels at PolyGram. The new structure moves Motown stars such as Boyz II Men and Stevie Wonder to MCA's roster, whilst Universal acts such as Erykah Badu and Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Island UK's U2 and Pulp will be with the new formed Universal/Island label. The merger between PolyGram NV and Seagram Co. Ltd. (of which Universal Music is a unit) results in the world's leading music company. The merger was finalised last month when Seagram formally completed the $10.2 billion (AUD16.2 billion) PolyGram take-over. Since the merger there has been a lot of speculation on job cuts. Speculation is that, as early as next week, the Universal Music Group will cut up to 3,000 jobs, of which most are meant to come from North America. The restructuring and job cuts are expected to result in an annual saving of $300 million (AUD 476 million) in costs. - --- gp ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Radio Music Award Hey, all... Looks like Emm's up for a Canadian Radio Music Award. It's basically an industry award given to new Canadian artists who got a lot of radio airplay during the past year. The awards themselves only started last year - they take place during the industry schmooze-week in March and there's one award for every radio format. Emm comes under the "Contemporary Hit Radio - Best New Solo Artist" category, and she's up against Moist lead singer David Usher's "Forestfire" and Heather Nova (this is so stupid that she falls under Canadian content because she was born here even though she left as a child)'s "London Rain". I think Emm's got a good shot of winning, although that awful "Forestfire" got a *ton* of airplay. I'm hoping Emm will perform during Canadian Music Week - it's usually a great couple days of showcases by tons of Canadian talent, so hopefully she'll be on hand to represent the bright new future of Canadian music. :) - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 17:41:51 -0500 From: "MSAndrea " Subject: Seagram-Polygram-Record-Label-Thing The article doesn't mention Emm but I thought it might be of interest http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/jan20_deal.html ~Andrea! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICQ: 10294764 AOL IM: TheAndyC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 21:47:42 EST From: TrishTLC@aol.com Subject: SEC: I think I go to Lilith University Okay, so I'm in my nursing class, waiting for it to start. It was the first day of class because last Wednesday, the university was closed due to the weather. Anyway, people start showing up and I noticed a girl that looked like Sarah McLachlan, except with darker hair. Okay, the next girl comes in and she looks like Liz Phair. So, that's two Lilith Look-Alikes. A few minutes later, a CARBON COPY of Emm walks in! I had to do a double take. Except this girl had brownish-red hair as compared to Emm's brownish-black hair. Same height, nose, eyes, build, everything else... Weird...
