Customer Review: 5 stars Stuff; Holly McNarland No Mermaid; Sinead Lohan Drive [ECD]; Bic Runga [ed: The Bic Runga CD is *great*, as is Stuff] Reviews Amazon.com Only 22, coy Canadian charmer Emm Gryner doesn't waste a lot of creative energy on overtly adult issues. The sunshiney flagship single "Summerlong" is a good litmus test: As innocuous as a fluffy beach paperback, the jingle- jangler bounces along on a frothy rhythm as it relates the mildly sorrowful tale of a July romance that falls by the wayside like so many October leaves. And, track after track, this starry-eyed lass uses her piano and gently emotive voice to wring more and more drama from her affairs of the heart--until finally, limp as a dishrag, her love spent, she's reduced to believing that "Death Is a New Day." Despite the Canadian connection, Gryner is no brassy Alanis, no madrigal-matronly McLachlan. Her outlook is youthful, ultimately optimistic, and--thanks to a confessional songwriting style that's as personal as a diary--altogether heartwarming and humane. The kid's got chops. Now if she can only find the right relationship. --Tom Lanham And another review: Dan Kennedy of What's The Story? Magazine from Fremont, CA , October 19, 1998 I could listen to this album all Summerlong! One of the things that music has so unfortunately lost over the last ten to fifteen years is the female singer / songwriter. Emm Gryner has put out one of the best albums in that category this year. The best thing about this album is the music, but we must not overlook the fact that she wrote all of the songs on this album. She didn't just write all of the words on the album, she also penned every lick of music on it too. Emm's voice is fresh and full of life. She is a godsend in these fallen times for women in music. The album's opening track "Hello Aquarius" sets you up for an emotional roller coaster ride on this should be classic album. All of the songs are well thought out and show complete musical diversity. It should be known that "Hello Aquarius," Wisdom Bus," "Summerlong," and "89 Days of Alcatraz" are all potential radio hits. You can get the album's feel from the radio hits but you truly feel the album's soul on songs like "Acid." "Death Is A New Day," "Your Sort Of Human Being," and "This Mad." All of these songs are heavy in examples of emotional sadness. Only Emm knows if they are autobiographical, but they will certainly spark an emotional response in the listeners. From start to finish this album rocks. It sets you up, knocks you down and then sets you back up again. In a time when we routinely shell out 15-20 dollars for a one hit wonder you own it to yourself to own this refresging album with 12 great new songs. ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V2 #7 *********************************
