This crossposting is confusing the heck out of me. :) Anyway, the Free Times show rocked. I went 'cause I'd been hearing about Jess so much :) [hi] and she was really good -- didn't seem nervous at *all* -- but i was incredibly happy to see two other (or three, actually) amazing musicians. I think Julian pointed out it's nice to see some more male talent, and I really liked Dylan's set. Yeah! :) I'm not much of a fan of Tory's myself. Alas, we can't forget Mr. Kevin Fox, ubiquitous cellist extrordinaire. I caught him solo once, opening for Sarah and playing guitar, and he was good. I got to chat with Dylan and Bev after the show for a bit, and they were quite friendly. And Rayanne. Very cool. I don't know about the Dayna Manning angle -- I haven't listened to her all that much -- but she definitely reminds me of Jewel. I don't mean just because she's blond and plays guitar :) -- her voice really reminded of the way Jewel sings. I don't like the word, but "flexible" is perhaps the best way to describe it. She's 17? Woah. >>also called Sarah Slean out >>to accompany her with the song, possibly the highlight of the show, >I hope this happens again! I'll second, third, fourth this one. :) >>(1) Someone explain this Sophia thing to me. >Easy- just substitute "Paul" for "Sophia" and "Emm Gryner" for "Gerald >Eaton" in that little story... If Emm had pulled you out of the crowd to >sing you a love song, you would have been a weepy blubbering mess, admit >it! :-) Yeah, or Jewel, or Sarah (either one), or Sophie B., or *blush* *sigh*, yeah you'd have ta mop me up. :-) I called the circus room and asked about Emm's show. They said tickets are $6 in advance, $10 at the door, doors open at 8, show at 10. Why can't information on shows ever be consistent? Argh. And to complicate matters, Pollstar lists Roach Motel as playing at the Circus room friday, Sarah Saturday, but no mention of Emm. Oy! Finally, Holy Joe's, December 1, blah blah blah. Be there. (well, they're not scottish are they?) >>how her face looks when she sings. She's a more consistent singer >>than Dayna Manning. And certainly much more consistent given her mmm? i've seen dayna a few times over the past year or so and i think she has a beautiful voice? thats what got her the record deal more than anything else. which brings me to another point: rayanne plays guitar very well! only 17 years old? how long have you been playing, Rayanne? >And I must say a special thank you to our favourite music journalist music jounalist, jessica? who/what do you write for? i will be getting a copy of the show from rayanne sometime this week i hope. im going to edit it to cd and i have some questions about it. should i leave the songs in the order they are in or group them by performer? and also.. artwork for the cd cover: i was at the back (got there just in time) test-driving a camera+lense and got some great photos including one of dylan and bev doing hook machine and the priceless look on emm's face when they started playing it. i also got some great close-ups of rayanne. she is very beautiful when she is singing, and with her wonderfully sincere stage presence she can really seduce a small crowd. i was mesmorized through that crazy 210mm telephoto (not unlike a small bunny in the headlights of an oncoming car but with a happier, less messy ending) BUT.. i exposed the film that night (i never used that kind of camera before!) when i tried to rewind it. all i managed to get out of the roll was a fuzzy shot of dylan+bev and a washed out picture of rayanne. so what im saying is would someone like to donate some photos? i noticed a few people near the front with nice cameras. it would be especially nice if someone could do a high quality scan (dont worry about image byte size) and email them to me (and i need a new car too if it's not too much trouble) because i seem to be fresh out of colour printers and can't afford to buy a scanner at the same time. >chance to see these talented artists, Dylan (and probably Bev) will >headlining a show at Holy Joe's on December 1st, with Rayanne and holy joes is above the reverb and big bop for those that dont know. it is a very cozy little room not much bigger than free times. just down the street from my dump, er house. i can practically walk there! that is a thursday, yes? i will be there and i will bring friends! i work weekends (among other times >|..) so im hip to the tuesdays and thursdays scenes, uh...man well ciao4now robearto@hotmail.com - ----- "seek simplicity AND DISTRUST IT" - -A.North Whitehead - ---- ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 09:06:39 -0500 (EST) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: Weekend Shennanigns On Wed, 25 Nov 1998, Paul Schreiber wrote: > I called the circus room and asked about Emm's show. With an emphasis on "FREE". :-) Seriously it was originally meant to promote little-known singer-songwriters, and back when we began both Emm and Sarah really were little-known, and independent artists. It was nice to do something for some little-known artists again, especially since all three are personal friends. A concert seemed like a fairly natural outgrowth of the promotional aspect of the website. Both Emm and Sarah's manager Heather helped out with various aspects of planning and running the show, so it was really cool that all parties were involved. Now that's the good P.R. version of why we did the show. The real version however was much more selfish, wasn't it James? Sometimes you don't get a show with the cool lineup you want to see unless you damn well put it together yourself. :-) >This idea was borrowed from the Three-Headed Hootenany Tour of Sarah/Emm >and Noah Mintz (who seems to have dropped off the planet! - anyone know >what Noah's working on right now? It was a very selfish act. :-) We wanted to see Jess perform! And based on the first (and to then _only_) time I'd seen Rayanne perform I kept raving about how good she was and I don't think we'd seen Dylan perform for months and months and... ...it all started from wanting to see who we wanted to see and realizing it wasn't going to happen... so.... to make a long story short, that's how this happened :-) > A 9 to 5 job somewhere in the financial district (I think), running a > studio, and being a dad(?!). Unfortunately my source (Marc, for those here > who know him) doesn't foresee any return to recording and performing. That is really too bad, especially wrt to recording. Noah is a quirky type and his sort of material isn't going to occur to others... ...I hope hehd doing ok and its what he wants to do. > hahaha... perhaps we should submit her name? btw, I thought she was still > 16, not 17?
