Sophia wowed by Philosopher Kings Concert Review: The Philosopher Kings Danforth Music Hall, Toronto Richard Crouse National Post Saturday was a night Sophia will never forget. Plucked from the audience, she was serenaded by Philosopher King Gerald Eaton -- the singer who most certainly puts the sex into this sextet. As he sang I've Been Loving You Too Long, Sophia shook and wept, trying to steal kisses from the singer. It was a great moment, one of several highlights from a blistering show at the Danforth Music Hall. Formed five years ago in Toronto, The Philosopher Kings seemed to burst out of nowhere. They met while studying jazz in university, cribbing their name from a passage in Plato's Republic which describes the death of democracy in a world where society is ruled by compassionate philosophers and sages. Signed to Sony Music Canada after only five gigs at clubs like Lee's Palace and Clinton's, their 1994 self-named debut earned them a Juno double-header for best new group and best R&B recording. Lead by the Jamaican-born Eaton, the band brings many flavours to the table -- jazz, funk, hard-core soul, pop, R&B, even a smattering of psychaedelia. This musical cross-pollination hasn't hindered the band from placing several singles in the Top 20, an area where eclecticism is often thought of as a drawback. Singles Hurts to Love You, Cry, (a re-make of Godley and Creme's 1985 hit), You Don't Love Me (Like You Used to), and I Am the Man have turned their second album into a Paul Bunyon-sized hit in Canada, earning Platinum status along the way. The core six-piece band -- the multi-octave Eaton on vocals, brothers Jason and Jon Levin on bass and keyboards, drummer Desmond Wilson and the duel guitars of Brian West and James McCollum -- was swollen to include 11 horn and string players, for the sold-out show. This was advertised as an all-ages night. And while the majority of the audience were teenaged girls -- there to admire the obvious charms of singer Eaton -- an older contingent showed up in droves to soak up the bombastic jazz grooves. At the show's mid-point, Eaton tried to spice things up by encouraging the audience to disrobe. In a moment that would have made Tom Jones proud, a flurry of bras hit the stage, which were promptly placed over the drum kit. "We're willing to go as far as you are," teased Eaton, who remained fully clothed. Opening act Emm Gryner isn't a household name. Not yet. The Forest, Ont. native, and recipient of the 1995 Q-107 Scott Liddle Award for Outstanding Songwriting is paying her dues, serving as a warm-up for more established acts. Backed by a two-piece combo, Gryner showcased tunes from her new CD, Public, and one unexpected cover song. In her set's high point, she de-constructed Ozzy Osbourne's heavy metal classic Crazy Train, performing it as a piano-driven ballad. - - Some of The Philosopher Kings upcoming dates include performances at The Loop in Windsor Nov. 28, The Lyric in Kitchener Dec. 3, and The Shark Tank in North Bay, Dec. 4. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 17:54:03 -0500 (EST) From: Beth R Manoogian Subject: Windsor show Hi...does ANYONE know ANYTHING about the Windsor show on November 28? Like show time, ticket price, where to buy tickets...I am trying to arrange a little escapade out there with some of my friends, but we know nothing about the show so that makes it hard. Also, if there is an age limit on the show, that would be nice to know too, since we're only 18. If any of you can help, please do! It's much appreciated! ~Beth~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 07:47:29 -0500 From: rannie Subject: EMM in Kitchner I am thinking about going to the Emm show in Kitchner.... how much are tickets and are they still availble.. how can i get tickets?
