Sincere apologies for those of you who get it more than once. Okay, I suck at starting off reviews so let me say the following to begin: Jess Weiser rocks. :-) For those of you who have her EP, and love it, you'd love her even better when she performs live. For one thing, her voice is much stronger now than it was when she recorded the EP. (Jess, I really feel funny talking about you in the third person when you're on a few of these lists :) ) Instead of having sequential appearances, the show this afternoon, with Jess, Rayanne Lepieszo (sp?) and Dylan White was more of a round-robin format, with each artist performing a few numbers and then rotating again. This really served to put everyone on equal footing, which was nice. Dylan started off with a few numbers, with somebody named Beth as his backup vocals. He has a really nice voice, and his songs are pleasant to listen to. Then it was Jess's turn :-) She started with a new song that she'd just finished last night (the name of which escapes me at the moment, because I'm listening to "Original Leap Year" and it's distracting me ) Basically she said it was about how some people get married, and they eventually turn into the people they were before they even started seeing their s.o. Mari, Rannie and I all laughed out loud (I'm not telling why, for those who don't know :) ) After that, she played "Cage of Wire" from her album. Next up was Rayanne, who reminds me a bit of Dayna Manning, and then Dylan did a few more numbers by himself, which were very nice. The only other local male singer/songwriter I've heard much of is Tory Cassis, but I personally don't like his stuff, so it was a relief to see that there ARE male songwriters out there who don't cause the audience to fall asleep :) Jess did two more songs -- "All I Could Do", from her album (she introduced this with something like "some people listened to the lyrics and were really worried about me, but it's ok, I'm happy now!" whereupon a few of us who were the culprits burst out laughing :) ) and then a cover of Tara MacLean's "If Only" (from the "if you see me" EP) which was very beautiful. Rayanne finished up with a few numbers that were pretty emotionally loaded, but she didn't explain them much (perhaps because her parents were sitting in the back corner :) ) and then Dylan and Beth came up to do a cover of Emm Gryner's "Hook Machine". I will leave the "surprise sound technician" explanation for Paul :-) since I don't want to spoil it for him, but I think you can probably guess who it was by now. (hint: Dylan is a Dead Daisy Records recording artist... does that label ring a bell for anyone? Bueller?) Oh, by the way, Greg Teltschick made a somewhat surprise appearance at the show, having flown in from D.C. this morning. I wonder if the time his flight departed this morning correlates at all with the number of cups of coffee he consumed at the show? :-P - - Julian (who still feels funny reviewing the show of someone he knows) P.S.
