Only 22, this Canadian singer-songwriter's promising major-label debut draws freely from the moody piano stylings of Tori Amos and the processed guitarwork of British bands like Cocteau Twins and Lush. The Cure-influenced "Hello Aquarius" seems a likely single, although "Phonecall 45," with its infectious groove and the memorably melodic "The Good You Make" are more immediate. Her voice isn't entirely up to the demands of her material, sounding strained at times. Still, when she puts it all together, as on "Acid," the results can be wonderful. Don't forget, Sarah McLachlan came across as a slightly immature Kate Bush clone on her 1989 debut. With some seasoning, Gryner, too, may develop into a major artist with a distinct sound and style. - -- may develop?? jessica n. weiser - www.adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "Maybe I don't know what love is, but it isn't this" - TM (blinded) ------------------------------ End of headline-girl-digest V1 #58 **********************************
