EMM GRYNER Lights Up the El Rey Theatre On September 2, opening for former SUEDE member BERNARD BUTLER on what would be the last show of their multi-city tour together, EMM GRYNER strode across the stage, greeted attendees with a genial "Hello, Los Angeles," then proceeded into the first vibrant strums of "Your Sort of Human Being." It was evident from that moment on that GRYNER would not only triumph with this performance, but also conciliate a capacity crowd made up mostly of BUTLER devotees. Gryner mixed a multicolored palette of kaleidoscopic pop and pondering ballads. Her gift for writing caustic yet resounding songs was only eclipsed by her keen command of the guitar and, most eminently, the keyboards, where she performed the most affecting songs of the night. A case in point was "You Do Something To Me," a PAUL WELLER cover set afire by the fuel of Gryner's subtle chord progression and churned fervidly by her impassioned voice. Attendees were taken aback by an a cappella rendition of "This Mad," a version much more intense and deliberative than that heard on her major-label debut Public (Mercury), released last July. Refreshing numbers like "Summerlong," "Wisdom Bus," and "Phonecall 45" offered upbeat contrasts to her more despairing selections, although each was still a thoughtful and saddening discourse on past afflictions. A heartwrenching performance of "Acid" was the night's finale, as well as the decisive stratagem in Gryner's conquest over the appetent audience. A moving summation of the night's transcendent emotions, "Acid" drizzled melodic piano over such stirring lyrical phrasing as "Hey, I'll always wish I was with you/Hurt me you can't kill me whatever you wanna do." With adept and confident keystrokes, Gryner irrefutably proved her aptitude on piano, concluding with an emphatic cadence chord that was altogether fitting and momentous. -- Gerry Perez MTV College Stringer feedlocal@mtvmail.com (September 15, 1998) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Nov 1998 12:50:55 -0500 (EST) From: 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu Subject: fwd: EC from Steve: re: CMJ This is from steve ito: >Mark typed: >>I just looked at the CMJ schedule, and it has Sarah Slean playing at the >>Louisana instead of the Elbow Room at 10 pm on THURSDAY instead of >>Friday...and it lists "Kent" as playing right before the Cardigans at 8 >>pm and not Emm.
