[00jnwe] Re: Emm in Woodstock Review + public speaking tapes [XfileGrrl@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 01:55:57 -0500 (EST) From: Kari LeSage Subject: Emm in Woodstock Review Hi guys, Just wanted to give you a little review of the Woodstock benefit For Breast Cancer concert last night. Basically, it started out by taking me 3 to 4 hours to get there. I went with a friend of mine and we intended to leave by late morning but he and I are both slow-pokes so we didn't get on the road until early afternoon. Anyway, we stopped off in New Paltz on the way up to get tickets since Rhino Records here in town was supposed to be selling them. It took us a little bit of time finding the place but when we finally did, we got our tickets and much to our surprise they were giving them away for free at that point. I guess they didn't sell a lot of them so they were giving them away and just asking you to give a donation at the door. It seems all of the performers played for free so all of the admission money as well as some of the profits from the CDs they sold last night were all going to benefit the breast cancer cause. Ok, I'll try to skip the more boring parts. :) So we got into the theater around 7:15 or so and the show was supposed to start around 8 so we basically just waited around for that. My friend and I snagged 2 seats in the left front row since there was only a handful of people in there at that point anyway. In fact, the place itself was small..maybe sat 100-200 people? And it was never totally full during any part of the show. So the first act up was Jake. It seems she is a local favorite to the radio station that was putting on the show, WDST. I thought she was ok but I couldn't understand just about anything she was singing and her onstage personality didn't strike me as much either. Next up was Deni Bonet. Now this chick rocked! I had thought I recognized the name and I found out where I recognized it from today. I went to her web site and it seems that not only was she at the Lilith Fair I went to this year but she also played with Sarah at Lilith as well as the violin for Shelter and Black on Solace. Unfortunately I missed her own set at Lilith but I did get to see her play with Sarah so I found that whole connection pretty neat. Anyway, if you have the chance to ever get either of her CDs..she has two EPs out...you should. She has this amazing energy and just makes everyone else have fun too with her singing, dancing, and violin playing. She was so good in fact that I think I'm going to go see her again tomorrow night in NYC. Anyway, I digress. :) So after Deni was done I ran out to buy both of her CDs and then back in to wait for Emm. For some reason Emm was a litle later coming on than planned. Finally her drummer and bassist/guitarist/background vocalist came out. They started a beat and then, there she was! She proceeded to play, in order: Phonecall 45 July Wisdom Bus Aquarius Protection (originally by Manic Attack I think she said?) Julia (she said this was a brand new song and it's beautiful...you guys have got to hear this) This Mad Acid Alcatraz Summerlong A few tidbits: Before starting "Hello Aquarius" she asked if there were any aquarians in the audience. The woman sitting next to me called out that she was so Emm asked the woman her name and dedicated the song to her...made me wish I was born an aquarian. :) Also, she noticed that a guy in the right front row (who today I found out is Mark from the Emm list!) had a sign for her so she went on a little bit about that. She also showed a little house figureine type thing that she had brought up on stage and put on her keyboard that was from that same town in NY...the same town Mark had on his sign. Hey Mark, can you explain to me her connection with your town? I didn't quite understand that part. :) Let's see...what else..she also talked about the problems she had geting through customs at the Canadian border because of something to do with paperwork. It seems she was held up for hours in the immigration office but she said she at least had a nice view of the Niagra Falls. :) I guess that's about it. She walked off the stage when she was done so I didn't get a chance to meet her. I did snag a set list though and I also got a chance for her bassist/guitarist/etc. guy to tell me what kind of keyboard she plays. I've been playing the keyboard for the past few months and am looking to get a really nice one eventually so I've been trying to find out what models other people play that I like the sound of and her's just sounded so rich and full last night...of course a lot of that has to do with her superb playing. :) So we finally left. On the way out I also got to shake hands with Deni Bonet and let her know what a great job she did. All in all a great evening for a great cause. And I'm so glad I decided to make the 3 hour trip up there. It was all worth it. Just wondering a couple of things about the Emm/Philosopher Kings show on the 21st of Nov b/c I'm really, really, really close to getting a plane ticket to come up there Nov. 20-22... In fact, I'm pretty much 90% sure I'll be there if I can find a cheap ticket... 1) how big is this show going to be and where/how can i get a ticket (does anyone have an extra i can buy??) 2) place to stay--are there cheap hotels up there? and what's the transit system like. i don't really want to have to rely on anyone else to take me around and stuff like that... 3) who else is going, who else can i meet?? :) Please reply to me privately and hopefully I can work this out--I really like the PKs and even though Emm's set will be short, I want to see her live and need to get outta here...
