I picked up the Imprint this weekend to look at _my_ baseball article :), and what do I find? *Another* article on Emm. Yeah Rob! I'll just have to say that this is possibly the *best* type of review you can get -- show up, more or less unannounced (she wasn't even on the sign outside) and basically steal the show. I have the feeling I'm watching someone on their way up, really quickly. Gotta love the headline. Paul Shamlessly pulled from: http://imprint.uwaterloo.ca/issues/100298/6Arts/arts08.shtml Spirit of the who? by Rob Schmidt Imprint staff I arrived at the Spirit of the West show just as Emm Gryner took the stage. I didn't initially know who she was. I haven't seen her video for "Summerlong" yet and I hadn't heard any other songs by Emm. As I wandered I was informed that it was "The Summerl ong Girl." Emm, 23, is from Forest, Ontario (near Sarnia). She learnt classical piano and listened to the radio while growing up. At 20 she left home for Toronto and started an indie label called Dead Daisy Records. On her label, Emm released a couple EPs, mostly of cover songs, to the Toronto music scene. To support her music, Emm took day jobs and played club gigs at night to p romote her music. Her hard work has begun to pay off. Since her album Public was released in June it has been busy for Gryner. It was cool meeting such a energetic and talented performer. I had trouble following her across the Fed Hall floor and her mood that night was light and optimistic. She mentioned that her father produced a monthly publication called Feather Fancier. Em m called it a chicken magazine but it covers other poultry as well as pigeons and waterfowl. Emm said her parents weren't entirely supportive of her choice to be a musician. "They always wanted me to go to university," she added. Now that she is doing reasonably well they aren't so negative. Her album Public hasn't hit any milestones yet but t he momentum is growing. MuchMusic has recently picked up the video for Summerlong and she is getting airplay on mainstream radio. Frankly, Emm Gryner rocks. Buy her album Public and enjoy. I'd have to say any complaints about the Fed Hall sound system are unfounded. I was informed that the 54-40 sound system was a rental, dictated by the band. Jonny was also proud to show me the improvements to the interior of Fed Hall. The renovations w ill probably go unnoticed until the furniture is replaced in the next couple of weeks but whether conscious or not it is a step in the right direction. Oh, yeah, Spirit of the West showed up to play after Emm. Lucky for them, Emm worked up the crowd pretty well and they got away with playing the same show they did last year and the year before that. Here's a review that I haven't read before: Washington Post (july 23) (reprinted w/o permission) Considering how many sensitive young women are trying to make their name as singer/songwriters these days, it takes a special kind of talent to stand out from the pack. Emm Gryner has it. Although her debut album "Public" is full of smart observations and soul-searching pop balladry, it's the pop-carft and ingenuity of her music that leaves the listener reeling. Gryner knows how to to bend a melody to pull maximum emotion from the notes, and the melodic twists in "Summerlong" and "89 Days of Alcatraz" convey as much meaning as the lyrics. But she also knows how to frame those melodies and fills "Public" with vividly appropriate arrangements, from the lush orchestration of "Hello Aquarius" to the lean piano of "Acid" (***). - -J.D. Considine Way cool, go Emm. :) This pic is so cool, I might scan it for you all to see...when I have time... jessica n. weiser http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "i wish i never saw the sunshine, cause if i never saw the sunshine, then maybe i wouldn't mind the rain...this pain" -beth orton ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Oct 1998 16:26:09 -0400 From: Sparkly Shannon Subject: Emm in Alloy Magazine Hi all:-) Was flipping through my sister's Alloy mag (a trendy clothing catalogue) and the last two pages are full of Emm;-) Three adorable pictures of her modeling clothes and a mini-intereview.
