Hmmm, her songs are not the songs qua songs we're used to... ...and she does tend to blend genres with frightening rapidity within songs. She's picked some quite able people to back her up, Jacob and Sam Cino (big Guelph connection) and co-write with... specifically Praise and Month of Trickery. > Anyhow, you fans are more than welcome to explain why you think she's so > great, but please, no flames. ;P Its the being in the moment. For Kinnie, there's a certain amount of, lets call it: willing suspension of disbelief you buy into. As Jess mentioned she's very in your face and you have to accept and embrace that part before you can go much further. I think for Kinnie, music isn't made in the studio, often its simply recorded there. Music instead is an ephemeral creation of the participants at that time, she likes it when the audience is as involved in the creative process as she is and where they can bouy her up through the performance with their performance. I think a lot of why I like her so much is her dedication to erasing the lines of music and art and people and trying to make it all one big muddy puddle. Not always necessarily the music itself; which in her case is just one component, but for the gestalt experience, the holistic vibe that she creates; that soi-distant necessity for being in the momement. Often what she's doing bears more resemblance to a pagan rite than to a concert and sometimes that doesn't much appeal to people. Your Mileage May Vary, :-) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 09:29:36 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: Summerlong video! Just a random guess -- "Emm" as in "M", which is a short nickname for "Mary"? Occasionally, my friends call me "M" as a short nickname for "Mel" or "Melvin"... Hi everyone! Thanks to the incredible generosity and enthusiasm of a list member, we're going to have a few list-contests over the next little while. The first begins today and ends on Friday Sept. 25th. :) All answers must be correct and all entries with the correct answers will be chosen from a hat. The winner will have their choice of the following CDs this time around: Bic Runga, Chantal Kreviazuk, Holly McNarland, Dayna Manning, Veda Hille, etc. There are different things for the upcoming contests as well. Yay. All answers should be sent to the following address: singing_one@hotmail.com. Please do not send anything but questions/comments on this to my school email account. Also-- this questions make look hard, but the answers are *all* very accessable. If you don't have the 'net, it might be a little harder, though... Good luck, have fun, and no cheating (ie: walking up to Emm at a gig and asking her all the answers ;). In the future we might do different artists or questions about list-members or something, who knows. :) - -- 1. What's the name of the band Emm performed with in high school? 2. Name the producers on OLY and Public (there are 3 total). 3. Emm's manager is? 4. Where was Emm born? (ps: Canada doesn't count! It has to be the name of the town.) 5. The line "give me punishment or say I'm a normal girl" is from which song? jessica n. weiser - http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "what has happened" - my 5 song EP available now through the website! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 17:59:26 -0700 From: "Adam D." I'm not exactly sure what Liisa's up to, I know she's not Music Editor any longer. Chart had that big Sloan thing a couple of months ago.
