Okay, forgive me for living, but I cannot STAND Kinnie Starr. I think she is one of the most overrated Canadian artists in recent memory. I've tried listening to the CD repeatedly, I've seen her live mroe than once, and I *still* think she's awful. There's no denying that she certainly has a unique approach to music, and that she puts her all into performing, but as to any type of actual musical *talent*, I dunno. Anyhow, you fans are more than welcome to explain why you think she's so great, but please, no flames. ;P - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 18:07:10 PDT From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Summerlong video! Hey, all... Finally caught the "Summerlong" video last night on MuchMusic! Yay! It's kinda funny, they tend to run that video and Sheryl Crow's new one back-to-back every time they play them. Anyhow, the video itself isn't all that great - it seems to me like the director had a vision for it that didn't really go anywhere or was lost somewhere along the way during the filming or the editing. It's shot really nicely, and takes advantage of the desert location, but it's a lot of Emm staring into the camera and not enough of a real 'concept' to keep you interested through the whole thing. Too bad, 'cause the song is such a hooky single that it really needed a video on that good a level to help her break through the glut of other videos out there. Anyhow, I'm so glad I finally saw it! Later, Tab :) P.S. Anyone know who directed the video? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 18:18:12 PDT From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: Emm in Watch Mag... Hey, all... I'm kinda surprised there's been so little talk about Emm's cover story in Watch Magazine. For those of you that don't know, Watch is a youth pop-culture mag here in Canada that's distributed free in high schools and music stores. Emm's on the cover this month, and the article itself is a really comprehensive, long piece about Emm and her career by well-known Canadian music journalist Liisa Ladouceur. First off, I really don't like the cover photo or the inside shots. They're thse really posed glamour shots that don't look a thing like Emm, and worse, they're distorted to look - I don't know - *cool*, I guess , so they're all blurry and weird-looking. Next, I had no idea about this at all, but Emm's real name is *Mary*! She hasn't used that name since high school, though, apparently, 'cause she doesn't feel it represents who she is anymore. Though that was really neat to read about, I found it rather in poor taste that the article itself is titled "There's Something About Mary". Very clever, ha ha, but c'mon, if she obviously doesn't want to be called that, and it's *not* her name anymore, why put it in something as important as the headline? Anyhow, I still suggest everyone try to get their hands on a copy, 'cause it's a good article, and hey, Emm's first (?) major cover story! :) - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 18:26:50 PDT From: "Tab Siddiqui" Subject: "Hello Aquarius" outro... Hey, all... I've been curious about that little punk outro at the end of "Hello Aquarius" ever since I first heard it, since I found it rather amusing , so I thought some of you might be interested to read this as well... I haven't seen the video yet, of course, cause I live in the states where *nothing* good is played on MTV unless it's getting mega radio play... but maybe it'll be on M2 someday... which I don't get. jessica n. weiser - http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "what has happened" - my 5 song EP available now through the website! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 22:21:16 -0500 (EST) From: 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu Subject: EC: Corporate nightmare on a Sunday night Alright, I *love* PC45 and was wondering if anyone thought about the lyrics and what they could mean--because, when I first heard it on the promo 45 before the album came out, I heard the "corporate nightmare on a sunday night" thing and the chorus, and thought it might be about being disappointed by the "corporate" end of the music biz and not getting a chance, etc., but then there are obvious relationship references in there... so, I don't know. Maybe it's about both, maybe it's about disappointment overall... or ... something. Any thoughts? I love, love, love the semitone changes at the very end, where it moves down, and then that cool drum thing... yay. :) jessica n. weiser - http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "what has happened" - my 5 song EP available now through the website! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 22:27:27 -0500 (EST) From: 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu Subject: Re: OAC: Re: Kinnie Starr Tab writes: >BTW, Are we using the "Other Artist Content" prefix on this list, too? This is the first time Tab has not liked something that I like (usually it's the opposite :). I don't think she's overrated--I've heard stories about the major bidding war that went on before she finally signed with Mercury and it was based on a bedroom recording only... >Anyhow, you fans are more than welcome to explain why you think she's so >great, but please, no flames. ;P I think I admire Kinnie's boundry-less music. She just kind of does whatever, and I think for the most part it works. I'm very interested in spoken word/music songs, and I was drawn to that, but then I started to listen more carefully to her writing and I think she's got a good voice as well... I like that she can combine french/spanish into her lyrics as well, and she's obviously very cultured and her music, to me at least, goes beyond something you "expect" to hear. You know? It did take me awhile to get into this CD, though... a couple of months, I think. The one thing I would fault her on is how she's *so* in your face. It's not all bad, but sometimes, when listening to her CD in one sitting, it's overwhelming. But I like the way she expresses herself and emotions, through music/writing/poetry/ rap/etc. Not sure that's a good explanation, but it's late... :) jessica n. weiser - http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "what has happened" - my 5 song EP available now through the website! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Sep 1998 23:34:37 -0400 (EDT) From: Nancy Gobatto Subject: Re: EC: Corporate nightmare on a Sunday night i love Phone Call 45 too. i think the chorus is so strong. i thought it was about the corporate end of things and how it affects your personal life. I love the reworked version of this but *very much* miss the larger build that it had on OLY. The vocals are incredible, though... really. I like the drums. I like the "dadada" part at the end. I love the way she sings "i'd trade my blessing for a way to open up...". And I'm glad it doesn't have strings in it. :) I was talking about this with Adam the other night, and the only thing I don't like about this album (keep in mind there's like 10,000 things I *do* like/love!:), is the overuse of the strings... I just *don't* think it fits well with YSOHB. I *love* that song, it's my favorite, and I think the new version is very strong, but I wish there were no strings in it. Same with "This mad". I think I almost prefer the starkness of the simple piano or a capella versions of it, but maybe that's just me. I think they work really well in "death is a new day" (i can play this on my guitar now! go me :) and "the good you make".
