If the store isn't open, break in, leave the money on the counter. Ok, its a poor substitute for her literally MINDBLOWING lo ive gigs, but I adore "Praise" I have tortured officemates and friends by playing it over and over. Just amazing. What's more amazing is that it was cobbled together live on CBC. Yeeha! She calls it "chunk-hop". Its similar to some of the more trip-hop stuff that Sean Lennon is doing this days. Kinnie is a marvelous experience, from her bisexuality debates ("Meat vs.. Muff") to her Panty Story tell-a-thons, to the music. Aaaa! I swear I could blow 10 rolls of film on Kinnie alone, she is just aaa, words fail. > year are Jeff Buckley and Esthero. Good choices, but go for the outre, check out Ultrababyfat! Ex-protege of the one and only Stevie Ray Vaughan he rose to fame (pretty much stroctly in Canada) with his debut release in 1987 with the blues-pop single "Voodoo Thang" (note humorous southern-styled spelling.) After a wacky career of non-stop Canadian and occasional US touring, plus a bout with Cocaine through the rest of the 80's and mid 90's he deicded to do an about-face and do what Brian Setzer ironically also chose to do: go swing. He's okay but as far as most listeners are concerned he's "suit material" now. I sound so callous don't I? :/ >Who can rave to me about Morcheeba? Is there just one disc >out? Nope. 2. >Should I even think about it or just buy it? :) Well.... I'm prolly not a good person to say this to you but you should definitely just buy both of them. But that's me. Take your Tricky. Add a touch of maybe something like... I can't pinpoint it. The vocalist is unlike anything I've ever heard. Very plain like Everything But The Girl, but soulful. It's trippy music. They are considered the last bastion of hope since Tricky has gotten so... weird. And everyone else has gone straight up electronica. They played here (Vancouver) yesterday and I'm too sick to do anything. It was probably amazing. :( Other stuff I would also recommend buying sight-unseen (sound-unheard): - - anything by Squarepusher. - - Esthero - - anything by Bjork. - - anything by Massive Attack - - anything by Underworld (after 1992) >I've >heard many good things. They visited the area last week and I saw them both at the radio station and their show at the John Anson Ford Theatre which the radio station also sponsored. They've been tossed in the acid-jazz/trip-hop pot along side Portishead, Hooverphonic, Esthero and the like but I personally think that they're beyond those styles. They incorporate 30's-era jazz, touches of blues-based guitar (especially on their live versions of "Friction" and "The Music That We Hear"), intricate string arrangements, and subtle ambient looping without over-usage of Drum & Bass. Guitarist, Paul Godfrey, can flat-out play with surprising depth of craft on pedal steel and slide. I much prefer them live then on record even though their vinyl version of "Trigger Hippie (Morslide Mix)" is quite intoxicating. Ross Godfrey isn't the best on the turntables but he provides the perfect environment for the band without ever trying to step into the spotlight, where Skye Edwards is usually at master control. She's probably the closest I'll ever get to hearing Billie Holiday live... just close your eyes and feel the music. To put it plainly, they make you want to dance and have a good time. The former of which I don't do well but am freely unselfconcious of when listening to their music... Unbelievable Truth were also at the radio station this summer and I just happen to walk in on their set (I'm a lucky bastard, I know). Andy Yorke is just the man. They return to the U.S. to support their upcoming new album in October and the Viper Room is one of their stops. Since we're doing recommendations (and some of you know I have a sickness of doing the same), I'll blather a bit... I really think some of you would like Remy Zero's latest, "Villa Elaine" -- especially if you like Jeff Buckley. Give their two tracks, "Life in Rain" and "Fair," a listen... Tracks #14 and #15 of "Something for Everybody" by Baz Luhrman. If you're into ultra-power ballads, then skip right to #15, "I'm Losing You"... Other "trippy" sounds can be found with Lionrock, Talvin Singh, U.N.K.L.E., Meat Beat Manifesto, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, The Angel, Spiritualized, THC (The Hard Corps), Soul of Man, Pressure Drop, and of course, St. Etienne and Transglobal Underground... I do recommend Runga as well; the kind of music that will have you playing jump rope and hopscotch with children while high on Kool-Aid. Simple, straight-forward, inviting pop music. Sleep would be nice... Ger _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Damn, is she good live. So my friend Steve and I show up around 10:20-something, and Emm's already into her set. Stupid La Luna people had said she wasn't *starting* until 10:30. Anyway, Gian's already posted the setlist, but I really liked Summerlong (duh). It was very cool seeing her do piano, guitar and an a capella pieces. I was one of the significant number of people who coerced :) her into doing an encore by refusing to stop clapping. She noted she hadn't done one in a while and was very gracious. The last time I was at La Luna, it was to see Steve Poltz (who kicked ass, btw). Now, the place was reasonably full -- all the seats were taken. But tonight, man, was it ever *packed.* You seriously could not get more people in if you tried. The only place I've ever seen remotely similarly full is C'est What during Canadian Music Week with Steve Poltz and Roger Hodgson (ex-SuperTramp). That was standing-room-only. This made that look comfortable. I didn't get a chance to talk to her, but I did manage to compliment her on her performance. Hopefully next time. I had picked up a copy of Imprint (the UW student paper) because I had written a couple of articles. So, I'm flipping through the arts section, and -- boom -- there's a review of "Public." And it's a really good one, too. Frank knows his shit, did some good research.
