Yesterday's Emm Gryner performance at La Luna in Hamilton was something to behold, even though it was a short 6-7 song set it was one of her best (then again, most are her best:P) Lets see, she played: (in no particular order) Phonecall 45 This Mad (a capella) Summerlong Acid A new song which i forgot the name to, she wrote it before the show started :) Her Paul Wellar cover, You Do Something To Me (i think that's the name) and she came out for an encore to do 89 Days Of Alcatraz, which was excellent :) and she might have played another, i'm not good with set lists :P The crowd absolutely loved her, and they wouldn't stop clapping until she played her encore, needless to say, she was pleasantly surprised. Some of her family were there to cheer her on, including her parents and brother. The place was packed for Emm's performance, but it got uncomfortably packed when Rufus Wainwright came on to play, it felt like being in a pack of sardines, But Rufus was worth it, his performance was great, different, unique, entertaining all at the same time, even with some technical difficulties he carried on and gave the crowd a good laugh. I pity the fools who missed this show :) that's all from me, take care, - -G

Two self-righteous kids were sitting in our vicinity going on and on about indie rock and how many great shows they had seen at the theatre, quite obviously trying to incite awe in those around them at their depth of musical history -- which basically came straight from Melody Maker and KCRW. Then Emm Gryner took the stage and one of the little tykes just had to mouth off, "I bet she's going to suck" quite audibly which is where I had to step in... Shortly after, our table was hearing nothing but the heartwarming voice of Emm Gryner and those who were once impeding on our musical journey were last seen seen walking toward the exit sign. I didn't say anything. I swear. For some reason, Mercury didn't set up any stand for merchandise. So I gave the copies I had to the one's I thought looked the most desperate -- which was two guys who had that all-too-familiar look of love on their faces (like the face Edward gets when he sees Sarah or Larry with Jewel or me with a good dim sum bar... you get the picture) when they met her. I did speak with her for a bit and gave proper credit to Steve and Gian. [Are all Canadian singers so short?] In any case, she had several industry standouts raising their weathered brows with her seductive onstage charm. By the sound of it, she'll be back here soon. Jen Price (Steve's A&R and Jewel's ol' scout) of Mercury didn't have any immediate info available. I guess we'll have to stay tuned to Northern Sounds. New Zealand's own "headline girl", compared to Jewel, and others. Much cuter than the Muttonbirds, NZ's other big musical export. Very recent LF second stage alumnus. Signed to Columbia Records in the US. Major label CD _Drive_. Quadruple platinum in her native NZ. Makes Bert Bacharach(sp) sound cool. Ok, Moe Berg does too, but even with Robin Black (IGR) cutting his hair, he's no where near as cute. I digress,... grew up in Christchurch, moved to Auckland to pursue a career in music.
