As far as I know, only Bernard Butler will be on the show 
(9/3) -- although there have been times where they have 
put the engineers through hell with two performers in 2 
hour-long segments. On 9/2, Remy Zero is scheduled 
for the 11 o'clock hour but they occasionally will add a 
10am slot if need be. The only open day we had this
week was today (9/1) and Emm, I hear, was in Berkeley.

I requested for Emm to be on the show a few weeks 
ago to the producer but I haven't heard anything -- 
although it's been too crazy around the station lately
so I haven't been there in awhile. The album hasn't
really been given its fair play at KCRW or the Southern
California area period. I suggested "Summerlong" for
adds to Mike Halloran down at XHRM-FM in SD (which
has probably the most diverse format in SoCal commercial 
radio) but haven't seen their playlist change. I believe 
"Acid" got a few spins at KCRW but only during Lilith 
Fair's visit to the area.

No word on any free shows in L.A. but since this is
the last show of the tour there might be something
last-minute booked for Thursday or Friday...

By the way, I first heard about Emm through Steve
and Gian then James, Dan, Jess, and Farr. To be honest, 
I haven't been able to listen to _Public_ in its entirety (if you 
knew how many CDs I obtain every week, you'd 
understand) but I do like the cuts I've heard with "Acid" 
being the strongest offering.

Also, I start writing for "You Know Who" again this week 
and the Bernard Butler/Emm Gryner show is next up for 
me. I'll let you know when it's up...

To anyone's knowledge here (and we manage BNL) it isn't them. Then again:
it might be a huge secret. But it's doubtful considering other press stuff
they have coming up at the moment. Sarah McLachlan has similar obstacles as
well.

the author, but I found it poorly written and inaccurate,
but, maybe that's just me??

 I first read of Emm Gryner in some chick fashion
 magaznie a few months ago. Her major-label debut
 sounded promising, since this review compared her to
 Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple, Jewel, and Tori Amos.
 I put the CD on my wish list. 

 Gryner received mixed publicity in music rag. Spin gave
 Public a 4-star rating, out of 10. Tower Records'
 magazine did a nice interview with Gryner. I decided to
 give the CD a spin. 

 I should have paid more attention to the "Spin" review,
 gosh darnit. Gryner sounds nothing like Sarah, lacks the
 soul of Fiona and Jewel, and mirrors Tori slightly on her
 slower tracks. 

 There is nothing special about "Public." For one, it
 sounds like Gryner is tone-deaf half of the time. Her
 voice strains for some notes that she should have left
 untouched. The music is generic as well. My boyfriend
 said that one of the songs sounds like a tune from the
 "Winnie the Pooh" cartoon. Another reminded me of the
 Sundays' fluffy single "Summertime." Gryner has two
 things going for her - instrument playing and songwriting
 skills. She plays most of the instruments on the album
 and wrote all 12 songs. The lyrics show promise for
 someone who should lend the songs to a person with a
 more pleasing voice, like McLachlan, Apple, Kilcher,
 and Amos. >>

i have to thank jessica for posting that...that...thing because it 
incites me to post as well.

i could go on all day, but i would be interested in knowing what kind of 
a music background our 'critic' has because, as someone who studied voice 
for more than a few years, i was immediately struck by the soundness of 
emm's voice.  she reminded me of tori because she is someone who really 
KNOWS her voice.  it is as much an instrument as a piano or a guitar.  
she possesses a unique, solid quality that will no doubt evolve as it 
does with any talented vocalist.

as for the suggestion that she give her songs to other artists, such as 
sarah maclachlan to perform, i have to say that i do feel that sarah 
could use some revitalizing.  i like sarah.  i think she is very 
talented, but i liked her better before she became the lilith fair 
queen.  personally (and i do mean personally...it is only my opinion), i 
fould SURFACING lacked the power to move me very much at all.  PUBLIC, on 
the other hand, moved me to tears.  anyone who has lost someone probably 
relates to 'death is a new day'.  is a poignant, fresh, artistly sound 
look at grief.

i'm sorry if i have offended anyone. that is not my intention.  this is 
just my opinion.

Zackly.

I was struck by the concept - as I was watching her last week - that she
could almost fall into a category with the likes of Liz Fraser (Cocteau
Twins) or whatsername from The Cranberries. Why? Cuz of the way she twists
a lot of words around. Bends them out of shape in her enunciation. Etc. I
find that interesting. Like she's not only creating a new lyrical language
but an actual new musical language. I thought that totally added so much to
her performance.

Maybe it's just me. :)

Ack. Poo on her. For one thing, I understand its her opinion and all, but I
don't think artists should be compared to anyone. They could say that someone
has similar talents as the other artists, but to say Emm sounds like Sarah is
untrue. I recently recommended Emm to the radio station i love (and may be
interning at!! :), and i told the lady i was talking to that emm's writing was
sort of like tori's, in the way that's its not easily deciphered, and that her
voice, while being compared to sarah often, didn't sound like sarah's, and she
had her own sound.  ugh. that review just ticked me off. where does she get to
call her tone deaf? ack, i'd like to hear the writer sing some of her songs.

I believe Emm will be opening for all of Chantal's dates on the Eastern

At Lower Sproul Plaza (which Emm charmingly mispronounced,
she said Sprewel like jewel, it's Sprowel, like towel) on the
UC Berkeley campus, Emm played 6 songs, a couple on acoustic guitar,
but most on electric keyboard.

posters & promo flats, and even a few vinyl singles (summerlong/phonecall 45)
but you had to be quick for those. They also passed out cassette samplers
{apparently with Emm talking about her songs - I haven't played it yet}
quite nice to see that Mercury might be getting serious about promoting her.
 
She also mentioned that this was the first "college free concert" she had
done.. so watch for her in your area while she's touring, they might be
doing this more often!
 
fortunately, a week or two ago I scored her CD single Summerlong &
a review copy of public (very different artwork) before locals got
to know who she was. reaction was favorable, fwiw, but a small crowd (~75)
being a Tuesday afternoon, with very little notice (nothing in the
Daily Cal the day before/of, etc.)
 
Fortunately, they put her on the cover of the campus paper
(in color no less!), no article, just photo & caption,
today, so I can snag a copy for the first 6-12 or so..
you pay postage, natch!
