I just spent some time reading her blog (that is not a blog) and the eloquence of her words resonated through me as they always have. We can sit around and say "oh music today isn't like it used to be in (pick your favorite year), and yet we have artists like Paula out there who are still grinding, still doing the thing they love with a passion that never wavers. It makes me wonder what the music business is all about... it's certainly not like the days of a John Hammond finding a Bob Dylan and bringing him along, investing his own passion for music in the young artist. Now it simply seems that record producers are looking for what will sell in the moment and once that moment passes, oh well, that's life. I refuse to see Paula as a bright comet in the sky that burned so intensely when This Fire was required listening for everyone who had something to listen to music on... and I don't know, sometimes I wonder if there are any regrets for being that MTV darling, that sidekick of sorts for Sarah McLachlan during the Lilith tours... I wonder if Paula knows how much so many of us still care about her, that we were probably more passionate about the girl in the black boots of Harbinger than the girl who was forced to play the corporate game in the years after. With a world filled with Lady Gaga and Ke$ha and all the other flavors of the moment it's hard for a talent like Paula to have a voice in the world of popular music... but I think that we fans owe her so much for what she's given us over the years. And maybe this is a place that needs to have a revival of sorts where we can get our local stations to start playing her music again and hopefully when the next record comes out we can all revel in her success. Couldn't remember how and I wasn't able to make the concert. Glad to hear that there are people still out there.
