Mandy Moore has a decent voice, but nothing original and no real stage presence. There was a very small turn out for this show. The Fillmore is an old historic venue, which is just beautiful...standing room only, red velvet curtains, etc. A lot of th crowd left after Mandy performed, which was kind of sad, but great at the same time. Less young ones and more room for me to get up close to the stage. I have NEVER seen Paula that close before in the 7 or 8 times I've seen her. There was one problem though, that I had with a few in the crowd. Please excuse my language, even though I'm 34 and gay, I was VERY irritated by these queens who were very young. Talking very loudly right next to me, IN FRONT OF PAULA, discussing their party on Sat and tons of ectasy, etc. People kept staring at them because it was really hard to focus on her performance. I turned to them and told them to take their conversation elswhere. The main guy doing all the babbling, tried to start with me...and if I wasn't right there, in front of Paula, he would've have learned who was the real queen (me)and who was just the sad lady in waiting. LOL. I won anyway, cause he finally shut up and left for most of the show. It pissed me off though, cause he was really babbling during a good first part of the show, especially during, "Happy Home", which was new to the set list and one of my favourite songs. Now that I shared the only negative aspect of the show, back to the review... I can't say that any particular song was a highlight for me because she really blew each song to a new level. She is sounding so much more powerful and clearer than ever. I honestly mean that. Lots of loud, powerful, vocal improv for most of the songs. I really love the song, "Lovelight", but her live version blew me away. Her powerful vocals and improv, at the end of the song, took it to a new level. The intro to "Lovelight" was longer and quite a bit different as well. Her band is AMAZING! It was sad to not see Jay Bellerose there, for the first time, but the new drummer is very powerful (and cute as well). There is definitely a strong connection with the new band and you could feel it. There were times where the entire band would just be staring at Paula, with huge grins, and just loving their time together. Another highlight was having Laila, on the piano and knowin that Paula was trusting her to do her renditions of songs. Laila did an amazing job on "Hush, Hush, Hush", playing with her style, which was a bit more jazzier. Paula's new interpretation of, "Me", which is one of my favourite songs, is quite amazing as well. It starts of quieter and more acoustic, then launches into a very powerful, full band version, by the time you get to the bridge. "Jolene" is also more twangy and countrified, than the version we've all seen her do from previous tours. The grunts are no longer there, that used to be in a few parts, throughout her previous versions. However, the beatboxing at the end is amazing as always and a bit longer. Those of you who are going to see this tour will be so blown away. I know for me, it's been since the WOMAD festival in the hot summer day of 2000, that I've last seen her. There were also about 40,000 ppl at that show and just a few hundred, at this show. Much more intimate and a lot more personal. She's humbler now. Not caught up in the limelight, as she probably was back in the day. She seems to be stripped back down to the basics, which seems to allow her to focus more on being real and giving the best performances to date. She even said, in the beginning of the show, that she no longer wants the hits and just wants to make real music. She just wants to perform for those who really appreciate her honest music. All of us, who have stuck around this long, will be able to rekindle the old feelings of passion we may have forgotton over the yrs, and discover new reasons to fall back in love. She's in LA tonight, I believe. I'm looking fwd to reading everyone's reviews and experiences as they go through another Paula Cole journey. - -Brian ____________________________________________________________________________________ Need a vacation? Sorry you had to deal with those jerks. Happened to me too in the most intimate setting I saw her in, Toad's Place New Haven in like 1998. Oh well, the world may never be ready for those of us who really care. Seems like she played more old songs than new, more than twice as much. A litle surprised about this, thought she was all about moving forward. Glad to hear she's the headliner! I was concerned, because Mandy Moore's probably got more of a recognition factor currently, major label juice behind her, etc. Thankfully experience and talent ruled the day. keep on believin', JB _________________________________________________________________ Find a local pizza place, movie theater, and more.then map the best route! http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&ss=yp.bars~yp.pizza~yp.movie%20theater&cp=42.358996~-71.056691&style=r&lvl=13&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=950607&encType=1&FORM=MGAC01 - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time.
