I was kind of dozing but I heard "... and now to sing 'God Bless America' during the seventh-inning stretch, Grammy winner Paula Cole!" THAT woke me up! Hit record on the VCR and, well, waited. Her piano player had a last-minute snafu and couldn't get a signal. So we waited, the whole world waited, for over two minutes. Then she launched into it, and I'm here to say it was as stirring and heartfelt a rendition of that old warhorse as I have ever heard. She overdid it a bit with the obbligatos, as is the current style in the post-American Idol era, but not so much as to be ruinous. In fact, I was surprised that she managed to put some genuine feeling into her voice; hardly anyone even tries to sing it like the words mean anything. When she was done the play-by-play announcer said, "Paula Cole - well worth the wait." Well yes, I reckon so. Fashion note: She did look lovely, in a royal blue satin dress. Her hair had a bit of a wave to it, which framed her face elegantly. She was definitely overdressed for the venue, but I'm not complaining. BTW, Chris Isaak sang the anthem before the game in a duet with his drummer. The game was in San Francisco after all, which may help explain the hipper-than-usual entertainment choices. And in case you're keeping score, the AL won for the tenth time in a row, 5-4, despite a last minute threat by the NL with two outs in the ninth inning. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming, already in progress ...
