She played a venue called Cedar Street Courtyard which is in the middle of all the downtown hustle and bustle. Sadly, it was a wristband-only event so i couldn't be front and center, but HAPPILY the courtyard is outdoors, sunken from the main street level, and small, so little ole me only had to stand on the sidewalk and peer down onto the stage and listen for free. It was fantastic actually, since normally, because i'm only 5 feet tall, someone usu. manages to stand in front of me and obstruct my view. But not this time. The only thing about where i was standing was that i couldn't quite hear all of the in-between-song banter, but i could tell paula was happy to be performing. Like a person who has returned to work after a satisfying holiday and vacation. She looked quite fantastic, and very relaxed, and i couldn't help but think... "YES! PAULA IS BACK." She sang about 7 songs in all, 5 new and 2 classics: Tiger and Jolene. Her band really complimented her sound, and it was nice hearing male backup vocals to her lead. I think she was really pleased that the audience was totally engaged because it was past midnight after all... people like me who had to work at 8 the next morning were hoping for the best...and we definitely got it. I was glad that she didn't sing "where have all the cowboys gone" because tons of people who were walking up could only say, "didn't she sing that song about cowboys?"... and someone else said, "oh you know paula cole... she's a lot like Bonnie Raitt." (WHA!!?!?) sigh. Anyways, i tuned those jokers out and focused on paula's voice --- it was most heavenly. I'm glad this old fogie stayed up way past my bedtime to see her even if it did mean i had bags under my eyes the next day at work, and almost fell asleep in the soup i had for lunch... I'm stoked about the new CD. Is it June yet? ~jean in austin - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time.
