"And it is so wrong that Paula Cole is not making music, for whatever reason that may be." Well said and I couldn't agree more.. Its on DVD now and never had a soundtrack released. Is the song featured by itself during the closing credits (where someone could record it) or is it something quiet in the background of a bar or radio in the car during the movie? I remember hearing a small clip a long long time ago and loved what she did. Does anyone have the song or seen the movie? In my opinion, HARBINGER was a perfect album that hasnt been overexposed and still sounds timeless and classic. But as much as I love HARBINGER, I dont know if I would want Paula to go back to that territory. One of my friends complained when he heard the title cut of AMEN that it sounded ridiculous to hear Paula still singing about "syphoning gas from the high school bus" when she is so far from that place now. The DEAR MR PRESIDENT song just sounded like a quick rewrite of COWBOYS. And as much as I thrilled to hear new music from the unreleased album with Hugh P., when Paula sings about the Grandpa she never knew in "SINGING OUT MY LIFE"...it just felt like she had already done that better in I DONT WANT TO WAIT. I expect more from her. Maybe thats not fair. Yet, there is so much potential in many of her newer songs. The quiet power of her duet with Dolly in HEART DOOR still floors me. The retro-cool unexpected strings and groove of I BELIEVE IN LOVE always makes me smile (I think its one of her best songs). PEARL is one of my favourite lyrics. My only problem as a Paula fan was that her songwriting for a lot of the other new songs just didnt seem to my ears to be as urgent or tight as past albums. I actually like songs with inspirational messages or songs that make you think...I just didnt think BE SOMEBODY, LA TANYA, or GOD IS WATCHING were well-written songs. The stories behind the songs seemed to me to be better than the final product. The reason I connected so strongly with Paula's material was specifically because of her willingness to dig deep and ask tough questions. But thats not fair to Paula. Why? Because I think AMEN was a project she felt strongly about and NEEDED to do...but when the public didnt embrace the album as expected, she never got a chance to kick our butts and deliver another album. In the past, artists often put out 1 album a year. If an particular album wasnt a success, a new album could re-ignite interest and the older album could get another push from a successful new album. I also think there were a lot of mistakes that are still being made. The name change "Paula Cole Band" makes sense on paper and for loyalties...but not when her albums are now found under "P" for Paula instead of "C" for Cole. I dont think AMEN is even on iTunes. And I know this will make people mad, but the unshaven armpits at the Grammys completely pulled the focus from her music (and FIRST woman nominated for producer of the year!) and made her the punchline to bad jokes. I, too, think the world of Jonatha Brooke. "steady pull" is a perfect record and in my all time top ten (along with Harbinger) Surprisingly, I heard she made more money from her independent releases than she ever made from her major label releases. I still hate to think an unfair artist contract basically made her wait out her time like some indentured servant while "the powers that be" ignored her. At this time...it sounds like Paula is gearing up for new things. The feature of Chris Botti on Oprah should introduce her to a new audience. She has a new record label. She is finishing her new album. I hope its amazing. (And even though I said I dont know if she should go back to the HARBINGER sound...yeah, I sure miss those layered vocals and experimentation). I hope she writes about the life she has been living outside the spotlight...the love, the frustrations, relationships, motherhood... whatever moves her. I hope the wait is over and she is with a record company who sees her as a long-term artist who is allowed to develop, experiment, make mistakes, and grow. good luck to Paula and here's hoping there is more to discuss soon.
