Comments below: BRI: I must admit that I'm pretty annoyed with this whole Paula thing. I love her to death but seems like she's becoming a has been. STEVEN: I dont know if the "has been" is true, but its fair. Many people think of her as Merideth "Bitch" Brooks or Joan Osbourne as having a couple of cool songs, but where are they now. (although Joan's new cover album ROCKS!)Those who do think of Paula often joke about the armpit hair or complain about how COWBOYS and WAIT were overplayed. You cant even find the video for IBIL online. (VH1/Yahoo both have other vids from This Fire, but nothing from AMEN. Funny, her website doesnt either (and pulled off any listening samples) I also dont think its fair, in that I think Paula still has a lot to sing that many people want to hear. I think she's done everything in her power. She recorded the new album while pregnant and was ready to tour with it 3 months after the birth. Its not like she took a sabbatical on her own terms like McLachlan did. She doesnt have any control over when her album is released. She's probably more frustrated about it than we are. BUT...I know she lost a LOT of dedicated fans when she badmouthed Sarah McLachlan. Paula was really bitter about the Lilith Fair "only" benefiting Sarah and has said a couple of rude things about her. Not sure if she and sarah still keep in touch. I hope they do, since I loved hearing them sing together at those pre-lilith shows and thought they complimented each others music nicely. BRI: Her album ended up being trashed by WB, STEVEN: Is it trashed? I saw a release date for Fall (no title). I didnt think the whole album was trashed, WB just didnt trust they had enough hit singles to justify putting the marketing money and muscle behind it and wanted her to continue to write. That makes me sad that labels cannot see 100,000-500,000 sales as successes for long term building of artists. But thats another thread. BRI: her song cut from the Dolly tribute album. STEVEN: Anyone know if it is politics (WB not allowing it), marketing (the albums label feeling paula's song/name wasnt a strong enough draw), or other factors? Again, I dont think this is Paula's fault. She is probably devestated since she is such a fan of Dolly. BRI: I love Paula to death, but even reading her last post from Feb on her site, she sounds like she's still on her high horse. I really wish she would get off the soap box, return to being humble, write some good music STEVEN: I agree that maybe its time to write such great music that people want to listen to the message in interviews. Without a fantastic album to support, no one really cares what an artists views are. Sad. I admire Paula for having the balls to be outspoken. But I think the biggest problem is she might have thought that she was more established than she was and her fans would be more loyal. I admire her for wanting to speak out about her politic views, but was a bit embarrassed that the song MR PRESIDENT was just not very good. Dixie Chicks make a fairly tame statement and are cruicified. Paula writes about Bush "cum-ing in oil" (did I hear that right?) and is virtually ignored. Many other websites posted the political songs of Jonatha Brooke (free mp3 new arrangment of WAR on her site), REM, etc, but there was no press for MR PRES. Maybe that was a good thing. I also REALLY admire her for trying to keep in contact with her fans through the website with her updates. It should have given us something to discuss and talk about. (courtney, michael jackson, politics at WB, etc) But no one really seemed to take the bait. But, yeah, if she wants to continue to have a career, it might be good to lay low for awhile and then speak up when she has a platform again (if that is what is important to her.) and put it out on an indie label while she still has some money. STEVEN: impossible. She is still under a 7 album contract with Imago/WB. Even if she wanted to, she couldnt unless they free her. Probably not going to happen since they lost so much money with AMEN. Has anyone heard anything about her lately? How she's doing? What she's doing? What's coming up next? I miss her to death and hope she comes out wiht something outstanding soon to make up for the lack in good music. STEVEN: Paula is no longer listed on the WB Music website. (either under Cole, Paula or Paula Cole Band.) We've heard about the duet with Aretha. Wish it would go on Aretha's upcoming album instead of Paula's (I think it would get more respect there...no pun intended.) And I hope some idiot doesnt tell her to save it for a soundtrack like they did with Heart Door w Dolly. I am anxiously awaiting another album from her. Hope I am blown away, cause I think she doesnt have many more chances to bounce back.
