I met a friend earlier in the evening for dinner and then we headed over to Joe's Pub to see if we could catch Hassan Hakmoun's show. The placed was packed, but we were able to grab the last two seats still available at the bar and the show started as soon as we sat down. My friend is a musician who incorporates Arabic and Indian sounds into death rock vocals and electronica (trust me... it sounds really good), so she was sorry we hadn't gotten there a little earlier to get a seat closer to the stage. As a burgeoning sitarist, she had wanted to see the musical instruments the band was playing, especially Hassan Hakmoun's sintir. Then, five minutes and a cocktail later, she leaned over to me and said, "Kenn, isn't that Paula Cole sitting in front of us?" Turned out it was. Paula was sitting no more than a foot in front of us, holding a sleeping Charlotte to her chest and bouncing her in time to the beat of the music. By the last two songs of the set, after the baby woke up, Paula had Charlotte standing up in her lap, dancing her around and holding her up so she could watch her father perform. It was exactly what I'd have expected to see Paula doing with her child. Little surprise that she seems to have taken to motherhood quite naturally. And, since I'm sure a lot of you would like to know... yeah, Charlotte is a very cute baby. And that's not just me being nice. You guys know I'm not one to pull punches. If the kid was an uggo, I'd tell you. But she's not; she's cute. In fact, she looks quite a bit like Paula did in those photos of her as a baby. Paula and I spoke very briefly during and after the show. I didn't ask anything that would probably be of any major interest to other fans (like when the new album will be coming out), but instead just congratulated her on the new baby and told her I'd look forward to talking to her soon. Hassan and his band were incredible. I saw him perform with a full amped band when he opened for Paula at the beginning of the AMEN tour, and they were amazing then. Last night's show was unplugged. My friend and I have been planning a trip to Morocco for about 3 years now. And my apartment is decorated in a Moroccan motif. So hearing the Gnawa played in its native form by one of Morocco's most famous musicians was really cool and perfect for a warm summer night. If they swing through your way during this short tour, you should really go check them out.
