I must say that the welcome mail for this list is the most entertaining one I have read yet! lol! Most of them are usually pretty boring but not this one. haha! Well anyway, I am not very familiar with Paula Cole.. which is why I joined up here. I want to know more, and meet other fans. I loved the 2 hit songs off "This Fire" and then last friday I saw her perform at the Rock for Choice show here in Hollywood California. I heard more of her songs and experienced her powerful stage presence. She is wonderful! She reminds me somewhat of Janis Joplin. Not her voice but the way she performs on stage. So now I am wanting to purchase a few cds and keep posted on news on any shows she might be doing in the future. And just to learn more about her. My 1st question: She performed a song called "Jolene"... and I really loved it! On which cd is this song? I looked and can't find it. I know it's originally a song from Dolly Parton but I was wondering if Paula recorded it as well? I hope so. I don't think Dolly's version sounds anywhere near the way Paula performed it last friday night! ;-) Anyway, happy to be here! :) ~Lisa~ ps: by any chance, is there anyone else on this list who was at the Rock for Choice show? - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. Welcome to our family! I also was at the Rock for Choice concert and am so happy to hear how much you liked Paula's performance! I'll be posting my review after I send this. Jolene was never released on any of Paula's 3 records but...there is hope! There have been several different versions available on varios promos and radio cds. Look for Captured Live on the mountain 2, promo single of Bethlehem, and a various boot out there called Diffidence(has many live, interviews, soundtrack songs). Best place would probally be Ebay, but if you have no luck let me know I'd be happy to send you a tape with a few different live versions! I'm just happy to see that Paula's appearance at the Rock for Choice concert has gained her some new fans. The audience went crazy for her didn't they :) Take care and hope to see more posts from you! First let me say I hope you all followed Sara's link to see pictures from the show. Like I told Paula...the dress was worth the trip ;) She looked great and seems incredibly happy. LA is treating her well! Like Steve said we got a chance to talk with her and give her a birthday gift we picked up in Italy before the show. Then venue was pretty big and cold, it was general admission and they had chairs on the floor. We took our seats down front and settled in for the wait...Mia was okay. Her deep voice was enchanting, and she played just the guitar. The crowd talked thru her performance, but she kept her spirits up and chatted w/the audience about the right to choose. The Bangles came out and should I say "rocked the house?" Everyone seemed to love them...they did play an energized set and had the crowd on there feet with hits like Manic Monday, Hazy Shade of Winter, In your Room, and even Eternal Flame. A few woman even came down front to throw some things at Susanna, looked like rings or jewerly. Now the anticipation is really building as we watch the crew set up Jays drums and put set lists down. Hassan came out and kindly introduced us to some of his family and friends then went to the back of the room to watch Paula's set. Paula came out greeted by thousands of screaming women..okay and some men! She was joined by a freshly shaven Kevin!, Jay, and Mark Brown. She opened with Watch the womans hands then went into amen, throwing stones, mississippi, whatcg? **very interesting note is that as the song came to the end Paula turned towards jays drum for her tamborine to find it not there! It was so cute, she just shrugged and went with it! Jumping and dancing where she's usually hitting and playing. Someone from the side of the stage motioned if she wanted it, and she just shook her head no!**, me, idwtw, and closed with jolene. The set list also included Hitler's Brothers and Ordinary. I couldn't figure out why she didn't do hitler's bros because she had the crowd so pumped. Ordinary was right before Jolene so she probally didn't want to slow down the set. It was sooooo wonderful seeing her play the piano again. Esp. on IDWTW, I've always wanted to hear an instrumental of her just playing the piano on that song, because it is so beautiful. Next up...Sarah. She did seem very nervous, and said that she hasn't played in exactly a year. Her new song was very good, she talks about not being told i told you so and said that the lyrics will probally change but here goes! Her fans are also very dedicated I met many fumblers there and they all seemed like a big family too. Last but definatly not least Melissa! This woman knows she is all that! She simply... Rocks! She played 2 new songs off new new record that keeps getting pushed back (may, then june, now july 10th), talked and joked about her breakup!, laughed that Paula stole Mark Brown so she stole Jay for Bring Me Some Water! She palyed some of her classics like Come to my Window, Like the way I Do, Ain't that Enough, Ain't it Heavy, and I'm the Only One(wailing and getting down on the floor w/her guitar! Incredible!) After the show, we met up w/Steve again and while we were hanging around back we saw Ellen Degeneres leaving with her girlfriend, Helen Hunt, some Ally McBeal girls (Kara knew them, I didn't), and then Melissa leaving incognito! Paula and Hassan left after saying goodbye and thanking the four of us for coming all this way. All in all it was an incredible night. I'm glad we went. It was worth the 10 hour plane ride from Rome to Detroit, sitting at the airport for 3 hours then another 4 1/2 hours to LA. Can't wait to see what's next :) Tina ps. sorry I sent my previous message (new fan) twice, i didn't think it went through the 1st time. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. Are you living in Italy or were you just there and returning from vacation? A few more questions: How old is Paula? I heard she was born in 1968.. another said 1972. Which one is correct? Another question: Who is Hassan? Is that her boyfriend? Just wondering. So where were you 2 sitting? I was kind of towards the front .. maybe about 10 rows back... something like that... and close to the side... not the very side aisles but next to it.. and near the bar where Ellen was hanging around. I saw her several times. I didn't know she has a new gf. That is news to me. Who is the gf? Is she someone "known"? Just curious. Anyway, thanks again for the review. I love reading different accounts of the evening. Anyone else there? I sure do hope Paula does more shows. I would love to see a show of JUST her. (or her and opening act only). Do we have to wait till the next album or is she known to perform at various places just for the sake of performing? I live in L.A and I know she has moved here now. I guess I have an "edge" in that maybe she would be inclined to do some small shows here for the heck of it. Can anyone tell me if she is known to do that? Last year, Lisa Loeb did a show.. a very small intimate show... just her and guitar... at this club here in LA. She said she was working on new material and wanted to do this to "warm her up" and try out her songs. I hope Paula does similar. ~Lisa~ - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time.
